Hamster Breathing Trouble: Clicking, Effort and the Red Flags
Healthy hamsters breathe fast, silently and without visible effort, so any sound at all is abnormal and open-mouth breathing is an emergency in an obligate nasal breather. This guide gives normal versus abnormal, the staged signs, and works through bedding, ammonia, airborne household products, infection, heart disease and chest masses, with the minimal-handling approach a struggling hamster needs.

Quick answer
A healthy hamster breathes fast, silently and with almost no visible effort. Any sound at all is abnormal.
Hamsters breathe rapidly, silently and with very little movement of the body. A soft click, tick, whistle or rattle is never normal, and by the time the effort of breathing is visible from across the room the animal is seriously unwell.
Hamsters also breathe through the nose only. Open-mouth breathing in a hamster is not the equivalent of a dog panting. It means the nasal route has failed, and it is an emergency.
- Any noise on breathing, at any volume, is a reason to book a veterinary appointment.
- Open-mouth breathing, a stretched neck, or elbows held away from the body means go now.
- Check the bedding before anything else. Pine and cedar shavings and ammonia from a soiled corner are the commonest fixable causes.
- Remove all aerosols, air fresheners, scented candles, incense and essential oil diffusers from the room today.
- Handle as little as possible. Restraint of a hamster in respiratory distress can be fatal.

Never use mentholated rubs, human decongestants, steam treatments or essential oils near a hamster.
Menthol, camphor and eucalyptus are toxic to small mammals and are absorbed through the skin and the airway. Tea tree oil is toxic. Human decongestants have no safe dose in a hamster. A hamster with a compromised airway placed in a steamy bathroom is also being heat stressed, which it tolerates badly. None of these treat a respiratory infection, and several of them make a survivable case fatal.

What normal actually looks like
Get to know this while the hamster is well, because the comparison is what makes a change obvious.
A resting hamster breathes quickly. The flanks move a little. There is no sound at any distance, no head or neck movement with each breath, and no visible effort. The nose is dry and clean, the eyes are clear, and the coat sits flat.
An active hamster breathes faster still, and a hamster that has just been handled or has just come off the wheel will breathe rapidly for a short time and then settle. That settling is the key. Fast breathing that does not resolve within a few minutes of the animal being left alone is not exercise.
Watch from outside the cage, in a quiet room, without the animal knowing you are there. A hamster that is aware of you is already responding to you.
Signs, by stage
Early.
A soft click or tick heard only when the room is quiet and you are close. Slightly more sleeping. Less wheel use, which owners often notice as a quieter night. Fur held slightly raised. Grooming becomes less thorough so the coat looks untidy.
Established.
Audible sound on breathing at normal distance. Sneezing. A wet nose, or crusting on the nose or the front paws where the hamster has wiped it. Discharge at the eyes, sometimes with the fur beneath stained. Visible flank movement. Weight loss. Reduced hoarding and food left uneaten in the pouch corner.
Late.
Open-mouth breathing. Neck extended forward and head raised to straighten the airway. Elbows held out from the chest. Sitting still in one place, often out in the open rather than in the nest. Blue or grey tinge to the ears and feet. Refusing food entirely. Unresponsive to handling.
The gap between the early and late stage can be short in a small animal, and in dwarf species and Roborovskis it can be very short indeed.
Working through the causes
Bedding.
The first thing to change and the most likely single contributor. Softwood shavings, particularly cedar and pine, release aromatic compounds that irritate the airway lining. Dusty bedding of any kind produces particulate irritation. Scented beddings add an unnecessary chemical load. Fluffy cotton-wool style nesting material is also a limb entanglement hazard and should not be used.
Plain, unscented, dust-extracted paper-based bedding avoids all of it.
Ammonia.
Hamsters urinate in a consistent corner. In deep bedding, that corner accumulates, and ammonia gas concentrates at the level the animal actually lives at, which is under the surface rather than at your nose height. Ammonia damages the lining of the airway directly and allows bacteria that were previously harmless to establish.
Spot clean the latrine corner every day or two, and replace the material there rather than stirring it in. Deep bedding is excellent for hamsters and it is only a problem when the wet corner is left.
Airborne products in the room.
Aerosol deodorants and hairsprays, air fresheners, plug-in diffusers, scented candles, incense, cleaning sprays, cigarette and vape aerosol, and essential oil diffusers. All of them concentrate in a small enclosed space, and a hamster cage is a small enclosed space. Remove them from the room entirely, not just from beside the cage.
Bacterial infection and pneumonia.
Frequently secondary to one of the above, or to stress. Common in newly acquired hamsters within a few weeks of coming home, because transport and rehoming are significant stressors and pet shop environments mix animals from different sources. Signs are the classic ones: sound on breathing, nasal and eye discharge, reduced appetite, hunching.
Some of the bacteria involved can be shared with people, so an owner with a chest infection should keep close contact and face-level handling to a minimum until they are better.
Nasal foreign body.
A seed husk or a bedding fibre lodged in one nostril produces sneezing and discharge from that side only. Unilateral signs are the clue.
Heart disease.
More common in older Syrians. Produces a fast breathing rate at rest with no sound at all, alongside lethargy, reduced exercise tolerance, and sometimes a swollen abdomen. Because there is no noise, it is often mistaken for old age rather than illness.
Tumours.
Older hamsters develop masses, including within the chest. Progressive increase in breathing rate with weight loss and no infectious signs.
Overheating.
Rapid breathing, lying flat and stretched out, reluctance to move, in a warm room or in sun falling on the cage.
Systemic illness.
Anaemia, pain, dehydration and shock all raise the breathing rate. A hamster with watery diarrhoea and a soiled rear is in a separate emergency, and the fast breathing there is a sign of how ill it is.

Prepare everything first. A hamster that is struggling to breathe should be handled once, briefly, and then transported.
What changes the answer
Species.
Syrians are the largest and have the most reserve. Dwarf species and especially Roborovskis are small enough that a moderate respiratory infection becomes critical quickly. Dwarf hamsters are also prone to diabetes, which increases urine output and makes the bedding wetter, which raises ammonia.
Age.
A young hamster recently home from a shop is most likely to have an infection related to transport stress. An older hamster with silent fast breathing is more likely to have heart disease or a mass.
Coat.
Long-haired Syrians accumulate bedding around the rear and can carry more dust in the coat. It also makes a soiled or wet rear harder to see.
Season.
Winter brings closed windows, central heating and dry air, all of which concentrate irritants and dry the airway. It also brings more human respiratory infections into the house.
Cage type.
A tank or bin cage with poor airflow concentrates ammonia far more than a well-ventilated enclosure. Ventilation and draught are not the same thing: a hamster needs air exchange and does not need a breeze across the nest.
What to do now, before the appointment
Handle as little as you can. A hamster in respiratory distress can be tipped into collapse by restraint. If you need to move it, scoop it with a handful of its own bedding rather than grasping it.
Move it to a quiet room away from all aerosols, candles, diffusers and smoke.
Replace soiled bedding in the latrine corner, and if the bedding is pine, cedar, dusty or scented, change the whole enclosure to plain paper bedding.
Keep the animal warm but not hot, and make sure it can move away from any heat.
Make sure food and water are within reach of where the hamster is sitting, rather than at the top of a tube it now has to climb.
Phone a vet. Ask specifically whether they see hamsters, because respiratory disease in small rodents needs species-appropriate medication and dosing.
Take the hamster in its own small carrier with familiar bedding, keep the journey short and quiet, and do not cover the carrier so completely that airflow is reduced.

Most of the useful assessment is done by watching, not by holding. Note the effort, the sound and the posture before you touch the animal.
What never to do
Do not use mentholated rubs, vapour products, essential oils or steam.
Do not give human cold and flu remedies, decongestants or antihistamines.
Do not give leftover antibiotics from another animal, or from a previous course.
Do not restrain a struggling hamster that is breathing with effort.
Do not put a hamster in a warm bathroom to help it breathe.
Do not bathe a hamster in water, ever, and particularly not one that is unwell.
Do not stir a wet latrine corner back through the bedding.
Do not use scented, dusty, pine or cedar bedding, or cotton-wool style nesting fluff.
Do not assume that a hamster which has stopped making the noise is better. Sound sometimes disappears as the animal becomes too weak to move air.
Do not wait for the weekend to pass.

When to get help
Go immediately for open-mouth breathing, a stretched neck, elbows held out, blue or grey ears and feet, collapse, or a hamster sitting still in the open and refusing to move.
Go the same day for any audible breathing, visible effort, nasal or eye discharge, sneezing with a wet nose, or a raised breathing rate at rest in an older hamster.
Book within the week for occasional faint clicking in a hamster that is otherwise eating, running and behaving normally, and change the bedding and room environment in the meantime.

Silent, effortless breathing, a dry nose, a clean coat and a hamster back on the wheel is what recovery looks like.
Bring the bedding packaging and the audio clip. In small rodent respiratory disease, the environment identifies the cause at least as often as the examination does.
