Guinea pigs in winter: dry heated air, draughts and respiratory risk
Guinea pigs do not hibernate and lose heat fast, but the bigger indoor risk in winter is heated dry air, which thins the mucus layer that protects the airway and lets Bordetella and Streptococcus take hold. Outdoors they are at risk from cold, damp and draughts, because they do not hibernate, do not grow a heavy winter coat, and lose heat quickly for their size. Indoors they are at risk from heated air, which is very dry and thins the protective mucus layer in the airways, and from being placed somewhere warm that is also draughty or badly ventilated.
The two problems meet at the same organ. A guinea pig's respiratory tract is its weak point, and the bacteria that cause pneumonia in this species, particularly Bordetella and Streptococcus, take hold much more readily when the airway lining is dry, cold or irritated by ammonia.
Winter checks are the same weekly routine done more attentively: weight, coat, breathing, appetite and how much hay is actually disappearing.

Why heated indoor air is a respiratory problem
The airway from the nostrils down to the lungs is lined with a thin layer of mucus sitting on cells with microscopic beating hairs. That system traps dust, bacteria and debris and sweeps it upwards to be swallowed. It works only when the mucus is the right consistency, and that depends on the air being moist enough.
Central heating produces air that is warm and very dry, particularly in a well-sealed modern home in a cold climate. The mucus thickens, the sweeping slows, and material that would normally be cleared stays in place. Bacteria that a healthy guinea pig would fight off get a foothold.
Guinea pigs are unusually vulnerable to this because their respiratory disease is caused by organisms many of them already carry, or that arrive from other animals. Bordetella bronchiseptica in particular is carried by rabbits, dogs and other guinea pigs, often without signs, and can cause severe pneumonia in guinea pigs. The environmental conditions decide whether carriage becomes disease.
Ammonia is the second insult. Urine breaks down to ammonia, which is a direct irritant to the airway lining. In a sealed warm room with a cage that is not cleaned often enough, ammonia concentrates at cage level, which is exactly where the guinea pig's nose is. If you can smell it when you kneel next to the cage, it has been too high for too long.
That gives the two rules that seem contradictory but are not. The room needs to be ventilated, so air is exchanged and ammonia does not build. The cage needs to be out of any moving air, so the guinea pigs are not sitting in a draught.
Setting up a winter cage indoors
Position it against an internal wall.
External walls are colder and often carry a downdraught. Keep the cage away from the wall by a small gap so air is not trapped behind it.
Keep it off the floor if the floor is cold.
Cold air pools at floor level, particularly in rooms with hard flooring and gaps under doors. A stand or a table lifts the cage out of the coldest layer.
Not next to a radiator.
A radiator produces a hot dry local climate on one side of the cage and a rising column of dry air. Guinea pigs cannot escape it if the cage is small, and it makes the dryness problem worse exactly where they sleep.
Not in front of a window.
Windows are cold at night, radiate heat away, and in daytime sun can overheat one end of a cage. Guinea pigs overheat easily and are less tolerant of heat than of moderate cold.
Not in a conservatory, porch, garage or unheated utility room.
Conservatories swing wildly in temperature. Garages carry the additional risk of exhaust fumes and stored chemicals, and carbon monoxide from a car started in an attached garage is lethal.
Not under or in front of a fan heater, air conditioning outlet or open door.
Give more bedding than in summer.
Deep, dry, absorbent bedding lets guinea pigs burrow and trap warm air. Add a covered hide or tunnel for each animal plus one, so no animal is excluded from shelter by a cage mate.
Keep a thermometer at cage height, not at head height.
The temperature where you stand is not the temperature where they live. A cheap digital thermometer with a memory that records the overnight minimum tells you what actually happened at three in the morning.

Winter grooming matters more, particularly for long-coated breeds. Damp or matted fur close to the skin loses heat and hides urine scald.
Managing dry air without creating a damp problem
The aim is air that is not parched, in a cage that is not damp. Those are different things and confusing them causes harm.
Lowering the heating slightly and using a stable, moderate room temperature is better than a hot room. Guinea pigs tolerate the cooler end of a comfortable human range well.
A bowl of water on a radiator, damp laundry drying in the room, or a humidifier placed away from the cage all add moisture to the air. Keep any humidifier well away from the cage itself so that bedding does not become damp, and clean it regularly because a dirty humidifier disperses bacteria and mould.
Do not aim for a damp cage. Wet bedding is the single worst winter condition: it conducts heat away from the animal, it causes urine scald on the feet and belly, and it encourages fungal skin disease.
Increase how often you change bedding in winter rather than reducing it. Warm rooms accelerate the breakdown of urine and the smell builds faster.
Use dust-extracted bedding and hay if you can. Dust irritates the same airway that dry air has already compromised.
Never use scented bedding, air fresheners, plug-in diffusers, essential oils or scented candles in a room with guinea pigs. Volatile compounds concentrate in a sealed winter room and they are irritant to a small animal with a fast respiratory rate at floor level.
Skin, coat and feet in winter
Dry air pulls moisture from skin as well as from airways, and the result is flaking, a dull coat and scratching. That is real, but it is also the appearance of several diseases, so it is not a diagnosis you should make yourself.
Genuine dry-air flaking is diffuse, mild, and there are no scabs, no crusts, no hair loss in patches and no intense itching. If any of those are present, the likely causes are mange mites, fur mites, or ringworm, and all three need veterinary diagnosis.
Long-haired breeds such as Peruvians, Shelties and Texels need more grooming in winter, not less. Their coats mat close to the skin, matting traps damp and urine, and a matted rump in a cold shed is a route to urine scald, fly problems in milder spells, and chilling.
Hairless breeds are a different animal from a husbandry point of view. Skinny pigs and Baldwins lose heat far faster, need consistently warmer housing, more food to fuel the extra heat production, and protection from any draught at all. They should not be housed outdoors in a cold climate.
Feet deserve a winter check. Hard, dry, dirty bedding and reduced movement contribute to pododermatitis. Look at the soles of all four feet weekly for redness, hair loss, swelling or scabbing.

Part the coat down to the skin in several places. Diffuse mild flaking is usually dry air; crusts, scabs, patchy hair loss and hard scratching are disease.
What changes with age and with the individual
Young pups have a very large surface area for their mass and cool quickly. They also need reliable access to food, and a pup that cannot find hay or gets pushed off it by an adult is at real risk.
Pregnant and nursing sows have high energy and vitamin C demands, and cold increases the energy cost further. Winter is a poor time for a sow to be under-fed.
Older guinea pigs move less, may have arthritis that makes climbing into a hide harder, and lose muscle mass that would otherwise generate heat. Give them shallow, easy-access shelter and deeper bedding, and check they are reaching food and water.
Guinea pigs with dental disease eat less hay, which means less chewing, less heat production and less fibre. Winter often unmasks a dental problem that was borderline in summer.
Single guinea pigs lose the shared warmth of a companion. Guinea pigs are social animals and should not be kept alone in any season, and winter makes the case stronger.
Guinea pigs housed with or near rabbits are at higher risk of Bordetella. Keep them separate.
Feeding through winter
Hay is the priority all year and matters more in winter, because chewing generates heat and fibre keeps the gut moving. Provide more than they can eat, keep it dry, and replace it when it becomes damp or dusty.
Vitamin C is the specific nutritional risk. Guinea pigs cannot make it, stores are small, and it degrades in light, heat and water. Vitamin C added to a water bottle is largely gone within hours and it also makes some guinea pigs drink less because of the taste. Use a guinea-pig-formulated pellet that is stored correctly and within date, plus daily fresh vegetables.
Winter vegetables that are practical and useful include peppers, which are a good source, and leafy greens. Wash and bring them to room temperature rather than feeding them straight from a cold fridge.
Watch water intake. Guinea pigs may drink less when cold, and a partially blocked or frozen bottle spout is common in unheated housing. Check every bottle by triggering the ball and seeing a drop form, twice a day in frost.
Expect appetite to rise slightly in cold conditions. A guinea pig eating less in winter is not conserving energy sensibly; it is a warning sign.
What never to do
Do not house guinea pigs in an unheated garage, particularly an attached one where a car is started.
Do not use an electric heat pad with an exposed cable anywhere a guinea pig can reach it.
Do not use a hot water bottle. Leaks scald and the rubber gets chewed.
Do not put a guinea pig in front of a fan heater or a hair dryer to warm it.
Do not bathe a guinea pig in winter unless a vet has told you to for a medical reason, and if you do, dry it completely in a warm draught-free room.
Do not seal the room to keep the heat in. Ammonia builds and the air quality falls.
Do not use scented bedding, air fresheners or essential oil diffusers in the room.
Do not add vitamin C to the water bottle and consider the requirement met.
Do not move animals between a heated room and a cold hutch repeatedly.
Do not assume sneezing is a cold that will pass. Guinea pigs do not get harmless colds the way people do.

When to get help
Go the same day for sneezing with nasal or eye discharge, noisy, clicking or laboured breathing, a hunched posture, a guinea pig that has stopped eating, or a guinea pig found cold and unresponsive.
Book within a few days for reduced hay consumption, weight loss on the weekly check, a dull or flaking coat with any crusting or hair loss, sore-looking feet, or a guinea pig that has become withdrawn.
Book a routine appointment before winter if your guinea pig is elderly, hairless, long-coated, has had respiratory disease before, or has any dental history, so you can plan the housing before the cold arrives rather than after.

A guinea pig that stays warm, dry and well fed through winter should be indistinguishable in spring from the animal that went into it.
Bring the weekly weight record, the overnight minimum temperatures, the bedding and hay you use, the diet including how vitamin C is provided, whether rabbits or other guinea pigs share the space, and a note of any recent change in housing. Expect the vet to listen to the chest, look at the teeth, and possibly want imaging if respiratory disease has been going on for a while.
