Guinea pigs and houseplants: which ones actually harm, and what a single nibble means
The danger of houseplants to a guinea pig is usually not the poison. Guinea pigs cannot vomit, and a mouthful of something painful stops them eating, which starts gut stasis within hours. This guide groups plants by what they actually do, from the oxalate crystals of aroids that fire into the mouth lining to the cardiac glycosides that kill in small amounts, corrects the poinsettia myth and the instinct myth, describes the signs in the order they appear, and gives the plant audit and the twelve-hour rule that decide urgency.

Every plant in the room a guinea pig runs in is a plant at guinea pig level, because leaves fall and shelves are not as high as they look.
The dangerous thing about houseplants and guinea pigs is not usually the poison. It is that a guinea pig cannot vomit, and that a mouthful of something painful stops it eating.
A hindgut fermenter that stops eating is in serious trouble within a day, whether or not the plant it chewed was toxic. That mechanism kills far more guinea pigs than any alkaloid does, and it is why "it was only a little bit" is not reassurance.
- Guinea pigs cannot vomit. Nothing swallowed can be brought back up, and no home remedy changes that.
- The most common houseplant injury is chemical burn to the mouth, not systemic poisoning. It hurts immediately, and the guinea pig stops eating.
- A guinea pig that has not eaten and not passed droppings for around twelve hours needs a vet, whatever caused it.
- Identify the plant properly. Common names are unreliable, and "lily" covers dozens of unrelated plants with completely different chemistry.
- Pesticide, systemic insecticide and fertiliser on a plant are hazards in their own right, and a plant bought last week from a garden centre is the highest-risk plant in the house.

Three groups of plants can kill a guinea pig outright rather than by making it stop eating.
Cardiac glycoside plants including oleander, foxglove, lily of the valley and yew act directly on the heart, and the amount needed is small. Sago palm and other cycads destroy the liver. Rhododendron and azalea contain grayanotoxins that disturb heart rhythm and nervous function.
If a guinea pig has chewed any of these, it is an emergency now, before any signs appear. Take a piece of the plant with you.

Why a guinea pig is unusually vulnerable
Three features of guinea pig biology combine badly with houseplants.
No vomiting reflex.
Guinea pigs, like rabbits and most rodents, have an oesophagus and stomach arrangement that makes vomiting effectively impossible. Whatever goes in stays in and travels onward.
This removes the entire first tier of poisoning management that exists for dogs and cats. There is no point in an emetic, and attempting one causes aspiration and distress. It also means that by the time you notice, absorption has already begun.
A hindgut that must never stop.
A guinea pig ferments fibre in a very large caecum, and that system runs on continuous throughput. Food arriving at the front keeps material moving at the back.
When a guinea pig stops eating, gut motility slows, gas accumulates, the caecal flora shift, and pain from the resulting distension makes the guinea pig even less willing to eat. That loop closes within hours, not days.
This is why a plant that only hurts the mouth still kills. The painful mouth causes anorexia, the anorexia causes stasis, and the stasis is what has to be treated.
No vitamin C production.
Guinea pigs are one of the few mammals that cannot synthesise ascorbic acid and must eat it daily. An animal that stops eating stops taking in vitamin C at the same moment, which is one of the reasons a sick guinea pig deteriorates faster than a sick rabbit of similar size.
Add to this that a guinea pig on floor time is a low, systematic grazer. It works along skirting boards and around furniture legs, exactly where plant pots stand and where dropped leaves land.
What plants actually do, grouped by mechanism
Understanding the group matters more than memorising a list, because the group tells you what to expect and how urgent it is.
Insoluble calcium oxalate plants: the aroids.
This is the largest group in most homes: dieffenbachia, philodendron, monstera, pothos, peace lily, anthurium, alocasia, colocasia, calla lily, arum and the ZZ plant.
These plants store bundles of needle-shaped crystals inside specialised cells. Chewing ruptures the cells and the needles are fired into the lining of the mouth, carrying irritant compounds with them. The effect is immediate and intensely painful.
The result is drooling, pawing at the face, dropping food, a reluctance to be touched near the mouth, and sometimes swelling of the lips and tongue. Swelling severe enough to affect the airway is the reason this group is not a wait-and-see problem in a small animal.
The important point is that the danger is the pain and the anorexia that follows, not systemic poisoning. Treatment is pain relief and feeding support.
Cardiac glycoside plants.
Oleander, foxglove, lily of the valley and, in gardens and hedges, yew. These interfere directly with the electrical and mechanical function of heart muscle.
The dose required is small, the signs may be delayed, and the first visible sign can be collapse. These plants belong in a different category from everything else in this article, and the response is immediate veterinary care rather than observation.
Yew deserves separate mention because it is common as a hedge and as bonsai, and because it is fast.
Grayanotoxin plants.
Rhododendron and azalea, including the small potted azaleas sold as indoor gift plants. Grayanotoxins act on nerve and muscle cell membranes and produce drooling, weakness, incoordination, gut pain and heart rhythm disturbance.
Cycads.
Sago palm and related cycads contain cycasin, which causes severe liver damage. Every part is toxic and the seeds are the worst. Liver failure develops over a day or more, so an animal can look well initially. This is one of the clearest cases where treatment must start before signs appear.
Saponin and irritant plants.
Ivy, snake plant, schefflera, cyclamen tubers and aloe latex. These produce gut irritation, soft droppings and appetite loss rather than dramatic collapse, but in a guinea pig any of that is a problem worth treating early.
Bulbs.
Amaryllis, daffodil, hyacinth and tulip bulbs are concentrated stores of alkaloids and irritants, and forced indoor bulbs put them at floor level in exactly the months when guinea pigs spend most time indoors.
Nightshades on the windowsill.
The leaves, stems and green parts of tomato, potato, aubergine and pepper plants contain solanine. A windowsill tomato plant is a garden plant that happens to be indoors, and the fruit being edible tells you nothing about the foliage.
Alliums.
Onion, garlic, chives and leek grown as kitchen plants damage red blood cells in a range of species and have no place within reach.
What is on the plant rather than in it.
Nursery plants are routinely treated with systemic insecticides that are present throughout the tissue, growth regulators and slow-release fertiliser. Slow-release fertiliser pellets in the compost look remarkably like food. Water-retention gel beads swell after they are swallowed.
A plant brought home from a shop or garden centre in the last few weeks should be treated as a chemical hazard as well as a botanical one, and this is genuinely the most under-recognised part of the subject.
The myths, and what is true instead
"Poinsettia is deadly."
This is the most durable pet myth in the category. Poinsettia is a euphorbia, so its milky latex is a mouth and eye irritant, and a guinea pig that chews it may drool and refuse food for a while. It is not the killer its reputation suggests, and the reputation causes real harm by making owners panic about the wrong plant while a sago palm stands in the hall.
"Animals instinctively avoid poisonous plants."
Wild grazers avoid some plants through learned aversion and through the diversity of a natural diet. An indoor guinea pig has learned nothing, is offered a monotonous environment, and investigates novelty by chewing it. There is no instinct to rely on.
"If it is safe for rabbits it is safe for guinea pigs."
For plant chemistry this is broadly true, because the mechanisms are the same. It fails completely for anything else. Guinea pigs need dietary vitamin C, rabbits do not, and several medicines safe in one are dangerous in the other. Do not generalise the habit.
"Non-toxic means edible."
Non-toxic lists mean "not expected to cause poisoning", not "suitable food". A guinea pig filling up on a non-toxic ornamental is a guinea pig eating less hay, and hay is the entire basis of both gut function and dental wear.
"Just give it milk to line the stomach."
Milk does nothing useful, adult guinea pigs digest it poorly, and forcing liquid into the mouth of a distressed animal risks aspiration pneumonia.
"A small nibble does not matter."
For the oxalate group the dose is almost irrelevant, because a single mouthful causes the pain that stops the eating. For the cardiac group, a small amount is exactly the problem.
"Hanging it up solves it."
Leaves drop, stems trail, and repotting scatters compost. A hanging plant above a run is a plant that delivers material into the run.
What poisoning looks like, and in what order

The hay tray is the monitoring instrument. Hay eaten and droppings produced are the two numbers that tell you whether a guinea pig is in trouble, and both are visible without touching the animal.
Minutes. Oral injury shows first. Drooling, a wet chin, food picked up and dropped, chewing motions with nothing in the mouth, pawing at the muzzle, and reluctance to have the face touched.
One to four hours. Gut signs appear. Soft or absent droppings, a hunched posture with the eyes half closed, teeth grinding, a tense abdomen, and a guinea pig that sits still and separate from its companion. Cardiac plants may already be causing weakness by this point.
Four to twelve hours. The stasis loop is established. No droppings, no interest in food, gas-distended abdomen, and a guinea pig that is cold, still and unresponsive to the sound of the fridge or the bag rustle it normally comes running for.
Twelve to forty-eight hours. Liver toxins declare themselves. Look at the gums and the inside of the ears for a yellow tinge, and for bruising or bleeding. By this stage the animal is critically ill.
Two signs deserve special attention because owners consistently underrate them. Teeth grinding, a slow crunching rather than the contented soft chattering, is pain. And a guinea pig that stops responding to the sound associated with food is a guinea pig that is very unwell, because that response is one of the last things a healthy guinea pig gives up.
The plant audit

A plant on a shelf above the pen is not out of reach. Leaves fall, water runs through the pot, and both land where the guinea pig lives.
Do this once properly and the problem stops being a daily worry.
Botanical names matter more than they sound. "Lily" is applied to true lilies, peace lilies, calla lilies and lily of the valley, which are four unrelated plants with four different mechanisms and four different urgencies. A vet on the phone can act on Convallaria majalis and can do very little with "a lily".
What never to do
Do not try to make a guinea pig vomit. It cannot, and the attempt causes aspiration.
Do not give milk, oil, salt water, bicarbonate, activated charcoal from a supplement packet or any other home remedy. Charcoal has a place in veterinary treatment and no place in a syringe held by an owner who has not been told to use it.
Do not wash the plant material out of the mouth by syringing water. Offer water and a soft, wet vegetable and let the guinea pig decide.
Do not wait for signs before acting on a cardiac, cycad or azalea exposure. Those are the cases where the treatment window closes before the symptoms open.
Do not throw the plant away. The identification is worth more to the vet than any description you can give, and a leaf in a bag is proof.
Do not assume a companion guinea pig is unaffected. Where one has chewed, the other very often has too, and pairs conceal illness by continuing to sit together.
Do not stop offering hay because the guinea pig is refusing it. Fresh hay in front of a sick guinea pig is what you want it to return to first.
Do not use plant fertiliser, leaf shine or insecticide spray in a room with guinea pigs in it, and air the room thoroughly afterwards.

When to get help

Appetite is the measurement. A guinea pig that comes to food and eats normally is a guinea pig whose gut is still moving, and that is the single most useful thing you can report to a vet.
Go now for any of these:
- Known or suspected contact with oleander, foxglove, lily of the valley, yew, sago palm, rhododendron or azalea
- Weakness, collapse, tremors or seizures
- Swelling of the lips, tongue or face, or any change in breathing
- No food eaten and no droppings passed for around twelve hours
- Continuous drooling, or refusal to eat even soft favourite foods
- A distended, tense abdomen
Ring for advice the same day for a nibble of any other plant, for ingestion of compost, fertiliser or gel beads, and for soft droppings that follow a plant chew.
Bring the plant, a photograph of where it stands, the approximate amount taken, the time, your guinea pig's weight, the number of droppings passed since, and a note of anything the plant has been sprayed or fed with.

Plant availability differs too: a species that is a common houseplant in one climate is a garden hedge in another, and the same common name can attach to entirely different plants in different countries.
