Guinea pig heatstroke: the safe cool-down order
Guinea pigs cannot sweat or pant usefully and cannot remove their coat, so they overheat fast and die of it. The order of cooling matters more than the speed: shade and moving air first, cool water on ears and feet, a damp towel underneath rather than wrapped around, and stopping before the animal is fully cool. Every case needs a vet, because the organ damage continues after the temperature falls.

Quick answer
Guinea pigs come from cool, high-altitude South America. They cannot sweat usefully, they cannot pant efficiently, and they carry a dense coat they cannot take off. In a warm room, a sunny hutch or a car, they overheat quickly and they die of it.
Shade, air movement and cool surfaces underneath. That is the whole of safe cooling.
The order in which you cool matters more than the speed. Cold water and ice feel like the obvious answer and they make things worse: they shut down the blood vessels in the skin, which traps heat in the core, and they trigger shivering, which generates more heat.
The other thing owners consistently get wrong is stopping at the point the animal seems better. Heatstroke damages organs while the temperature is high and continues to damage them afterwards. A guinea pig that has perked up can still deteriorate over the following day or two, which is why every case goes to a vet.
- Move to shade and moving air first. Everything else comes after that.
- Cool water, never cold, and never ice. Feet, ears and the underside.
- Lay the animal on a damp towel. Never wrap it in one.
- Stop active cooling before the guinea pig feels fully cool, because cooling continues.
- Go to a vet even if it recovers. The dangerous part happens afterwards.

Rapid surface cooling makes the blood vessels in the skin clamp shut. That is exactly the pathway heat needs to leave the body, so the core keeps climbing while the surface feels cold. Cold also triggers shivering, which produces heat, and the shock of immersion can kill a small, already compromised animal outright. Cool water, air movement and shade are what work.

Why guinea pigs overheat so easily
A mammal sheds heat four ways: radiating it from the skin, conducting it into cooler surfaces, convecting it into moving air, and evaporating water from the body surface or the airway.
A guinea pig is poorly equipped for three of those and completely dependent on the fourth.
It cannot sweat usefully. Guinea pigs have very limited sweating capacity, so evaporative cooling from the skin is not available to them.
It cannot pant effectively. Dogs shed a large amount of heat by moving air rapidly over the wet surfaces of the mouth and airway. Guinea pigs do not have this capacity, and they breathe through the nose. Open-mouth breathing in a guinea pig is not the equivalent of a dog panting; it is a sign of severe distress.
It cannot remove its coat. A dense coat is insulation, and long-haired breeds such as the Peruvian, Silkie and Texel carry considerably more of it. Coat that drags on the ground also holds heat and moisture against the skin.
What it has left is the ears, which carry blood close to the surface, and behaviour: lying flat against a cool surface, stretching out to increase surface area, seeking shade and moving less.
That is why the interventions that work are environmental. You are not helping the animal cool itself; you are providing the cool surfaces, the moving air and the shade that its own physiology cannot generate.
Humidity is the multiplier. Whatever small amount of evaporative cooling is available disappears in humid air, which is why a muggy day is more dangerous than a hot dry one at the same temperature.
Where heatstroke actually happens
Outdoor hutches and runs. The most common setting. The critical detail is that shade moves. A hutch shaded at nine in the morning can be in full sun by two in the afternoon, and nobody is at home to notice.
Sheds, garages and greenhouses. These act as ovens. A shed with the door closed can be far hotter than the garden outside it.
Conservatories and sunny windowsills. Glass traps heat and there is usually no cross-ventilation.
Cars. Never, for any length of time, with any window arrangement.
Upstairs rooms. Heat rises, and the top floor of a house is the hottest part of it.
Plastic-based indoor cages in a sunny room. The base holds heat and the animal has nowhere cooler to move to.
During transport, including to and from the vet, and at shows.
Still air. A room that is not especially hot but has no air movement at all is worse than a slightly warmer room with a breeze.
Published guidance for guinea pigs commonly places the comfortable range in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, with risk climbing steeply above the mid twenties, and it is sensible to check the range your own vet recommends. What matters more than any single number is measuring the temperature at the animal's level, in the actual hutch or cage, in the afternoon, rather than reading the forecast for your town.
Who is at highest risk
Pregnant sows, particularly in late pregnancy and particularly if overweight. Heat stress and pregnancy toxaemia present similarly and both are serious.
Overweight guinea pigs, because fat is insulation and because they move less.
Long-haired breeds, and any guinea pig whose coat is matted, since mats hold heat and prevent air reaching the skin.
Older animals and those with heart or respiratory disease, which have less reserve.
Guinea pigs already dehydrated, including any that has been off food or has a blocked or empty water bottle.
Very young animals.
Any guinea pig with a recent illness or that has just had surgery.
The cool-down order
Work through these in sequence. The order is the point.
One: get it out of the heat.
Move the guinea pig to the coolest place available with moving air. A tiled bathroom or kitchen floor, a shaded ground-floor room, or the shadiest part of the garden with a breeze. Do this before anything else, because nothing you do in the sun will work.
Two: put it on something cool, do not wrap it.
Lay it on a damp, cool towel, or on a ceramic or stone tile that has been kept in the shade. A towel underneath conducts heat away. A towel wrapped around the animal insulates it and traps heat, which is the opposite of what you want.
Three: apply cool water to the extremities.
Cool, not cold. Wet the feet, the ears and the underside of the body with a damp cloth or by trickling water over them. Ears and feet are where blood runs close to the surface, so cooling there cools the blood returning to the core. Do not soak the whole animal, and do not get water into the ears, eyes or nose.
Four: add air movement.
A fan on a low setting, positioned so the air passes across the animal rather than blasting into its face. Moving air over damp skin is what actually removes heat. A fan alone, on a dry animal, does much less.
Five: offer water, never force it.
Put water where the animal can reach it without moving far, in a bowl as well as a bottle. Do not syringe water into the mouth of a collapsed or weak guinea pig. It will inhale it, and aspiration pneumonia on top of heatstroke is usually fatal.
Six: stop cooling before it feels fully cool.
Body temperature continues to fall after you stop, and small animals overshoot into hypothermia easily. Once the animal is responsive, breathing more easily and no longer flat out, ease off the active cooling and keep it in a cool, quiet, shaded place.
Seven: go to the vet, regardless.
Call ahead, say it is a heatstroke case, and go. Cooling on the way is fine; delaying to cool at home is not.

A carrier lined with a damp towel, kept low and shaded, is the right way to travel. Not a sealed box on a warm car seat.
Why apparent recovery is not recovery
This is the part that costs guinea pigs their lives after the crisis appears to be over.
High core temperature damages cells directly. It damages the lining of blood vessels, which then leak. It damages the gut lining, allowing bacteria and toxins into the bloodstream. It damages the kidneys, which depend on blood flow that heat and dehydration have already reduced. It disturbs clotting.
None of that stops when the temperature comes down. Kidney injury and clotting problems develop over the following hours and days, and the guinea pig that looked bright in the evening can be seriously ill the next morning.
There is also a second, species-specific problem. A guinea pig that has been stressed and has stopped eating, even for a few hours, is heading towards gut stasis. Reduced gut motility causes pain and further loss of appetite, and the loop closes quickly. Getting a guinea pig eating again after a heat event is a clinical priority in its own right.
That is why the advice is not to observe at home. Veterinary assessment gives fluid support, pain relief, monitoring for organ damage, and assisted feeding if the animal is off food.
What else looks like heatstroke
A flat, unresponsive guinea pig in warm weather is not always heatstroke, and treating it as such wastes time.
Gut stasis. Hunched rather than stretched out, few or no droppings, teeth grinding, and often no unusual heat exposure. Cooling will not help.
Pain from any cause. Bladder stones, dental disease, an abscess or an injury. Look for hunching, reluctance to move, and vocalising when touched or when urinating.
Pregnancy toxaemia. Late pregnancy, often in an overweight sow, sometimes after a period of not eating or a stressful event. Lethargy, off food, muscle twitching, and rapid deterioration. It is a genuine emergency and it is not fixed by cooling.
Respiratory infection. Rapid breathing, nasal or eye discharge, crackles you can hear, often with a fever. Cooling an animal with a fever is not the answer either.
Low blood sugar from not eating. Weakness and collapse in an animal that has been off food.
The distinguishing questions are the environment and the posture. Heatstroke happens in a specific setting: a hot hutch, a sunny room, a car, a still humid afternoon. The affected animal is stretched flat and long, trying to lose heat, rather than hunched and tucked in. If the environment does not fit, look elsewhere.

Ear colour, breathing rate and whether the animal is flat and stretched or hunched and tucked all tell you something different.
Preventing it, which is the real answer
Track the shade through the day. Stand in the garden at nine, at noon and at three, and look at where the hutch actually is. Move it, or add a solid shade above it that does not block airflow.
Ventilate, do not seal. A hutch needs cross-flow. A closed shed does not have any.
Bring them in during a heat wave. The coolest downstairs room, on a hard floor, is better than any outdoor arrangement.
Provide cool surfaces. Ceramic or slate tiles kept in the shade, and a frozen bottle of water wrapped in a towel so the animal can lie against it if it chooses and move away if it wants to. Never place a frozen item directly against the skin, and always give a choice.
Water everywhere, checked twice a day. Bottles block, and a blocked bottle in a heat wave is a disaster. Offer a bowl as well.
Add water through food. Extra cucumber and other watery vegetables in hot weather help hydration, within the usual rules about not overloading the gut with fresh food.
Trim long coats before summer. For Peruvians, Silkies, Texels and Coronets, a summer trim is welfare care, not cosmetic, and it also prevents the mats that trap heat.
Manage weight. An overweight guinea pig is at higher risk of everything on this page.
Do not transport in the heat of the day. Travel early or late, use a carrier with real ventilation, keep it out of direct sun, and never leave it in a parked car.
Watch the pregnant sows especially closely and keep them in the coolest available place.
What never to do
Do not immerse a guinea pig in cold water or use ice, ice packs or frozen items directly against the skin.
Do not wrap the animal in a wet towel. Lay it on one instead.
Do not put a fan directly onto the face of a distressed animal.
Do not syringe water or food into a collapsed or weak guinea pig.
Do not use alcohol, spirits or any evaporative liquid on the skin.
Do not leave a guinea pig in a car, in a conservatory, in a greenhouse or in a closed shed at any time in warm weather.
Do not assume recovery means it is over.
Do not give human medication of any kind.
Do not wait until the morning if the animal is not eating.

When to get help
Go immediately, by the fastest route, for a guinea pig that is breathing with its mouth open, staggering, twitching, collapsed or unresponsive. Cool on the way rather than before you leave.
Go the same day for any guinea pig that has been flat and hot, even if it has improved, and for any that has stopped eating or is producing fewer droppings after a warm day.
Call for advice before travelling if the animal is severely affected, because your vet may want you to begin cooling first and may prepare for your arrival.

Back to eating hay, breathing quietly, and choosing where to lie. That is what recovery looks like, and it is confirmed over days rather than minutes.
Tell the vet how long the animal was exposed, what the temperature was inside the enclosure if you know it, exactly what cooling you did and for how long, whether it has eaten or drunk since, whether droppings have been passed, whether a female might be pregnant, and its usual weight. That history shapes the treatment more than the examination does.
