Guinea Pigs and Heat: Cage Placement, Windows, Glass and Balconies
Guinea pigs come from a cool climate, cannot sweat and pant poorly, so heat kills them faster than almost anything else. This guide explains why a cage by a window is hotter than the room, how to set up shade and cooling that the animals can move away from, the correct emergency cooling order, and the twice-daily rear-end check that prevents flystrike.

Quick answer
Guinea pigs come from cool, high-altitude South America. They tolerate cold far better than heat, they cannot sweat, they cannot pant efficiently, and once they are overheating they deteriorate faster than almost any other small pet.
The most dangerous place in a home is not the balcony. It is a cage next to a window. Glass lets sunlight in and traps the heat it becomes, so an enclosure in a sunny window can be far hotter than the room around it, and the sun reaches it at a different time each day.
Position the enclosure against an interior wall. A spot that is shaded at breakfast may be in full sun by mid-afternoon.
- Put a thermometer at cage height, not on the wall, and check it in the afternoon.
- Never keep guinea pigs in a conservatory, a sunroom, a greenhouse or a parked car.
- Panting, drooling and lying flat and unresponsive are late signs. Act well before them.
- Cool with cool water on the ears, feet and belly. Never with ice or an ice bath.
- In warm weather, check the rear end twice a day. Flystrike kills within a day.

Heatstroke in a guinea pig is frequently fatal and it develops within a very short time in an enclosed sunny space.
A guinea pig has almost no way to lose heat. It cannot sweat over its body, its panting mechanism is poor, and its dense coat insulates in both directions. Once the body temperature rises past what it can compensate for, the gut lining, the kidneys and the clotting system begin to fail, and animals that appear to recover can die a day or two later from that damage. Every guinea pig that has overheated needs veterinary assessment even if it looks better after cooling.

Why heat is the specific danger
Guinea pigs evolved in a climate that is cool, dry and stable. Their physiology reflects it.
They have no useful whole-body sweating. Heat is lost through the thinly furred, well-supplied ears and through the feet, and by behaviour: moving into shade, spreading out on a cool surface, and reducing activity. That is a small toolkit.
Panting in dogs works because a large volume of air moves over wet surfaces in the mouth and airway. Guinea pigs do not have that capacity, which is why panting in a guinea pig is not a cooling strategy so much as a sign that everything else has already failed.
The coat insulates. That is useful in the Andes and a serious liability in a warm flat. Long-coated breeds such as Peruvians, Shelties and Texels carry a much heavier burden and overheat considerably faster. Overweight animals have more insulation and less surface area for their mass. Pregnant sows are generating extra heat and have less reserve. Older animals and those with any respiratory disease compensate poorly.
Hairless varieties have the opposite problem and need careful attention to cold and to sunburn, but they too can overheat in a sunny enclosure.
Why the window is worse than the balcony
Glass is transparent to the short wavelengths that come from the sun and largely opaque to the longer wavelengths that warm surfaces re-radiate. Energy goes in, becomes heat, and cannot get back out. This is why a car interior becomes dangerous on a mild day and why a windowsill can be hot to the touch when the room feels comfortable.
An enclosure placed by a window is therefore not at room temperature. It is at window temperature, and that changes hour by hour as the sun moves. A cage that is comfortably shaded when you leave for work can be in direct sun by early afternoon, and nobody is there to move it.
Conservatories, sunrooms and glazed balconies concentrate this effect and should never house guinea pigs, in any season, at any time of day.
The other error is measuring the wrong place. A thermostat or a thermometer on an interior wall at head height reports the coolest, most stable air in the room. Heat stratifies, sunlight is local, and the temperature at floor level inside a plastic-based enclosure near a window can be very different. Put a thermometer inside the enclosure, at the height the guinea pigs live at, and look at it in mid-afternoon rather than in the morning.

Measure where the animals are. A thermometer on the wall does not describe the inside of an enclosure in the sun.
Using a balcony or an outdoor run safely
Outdoor time on grass is genuinely good for guinea pigs, and a balcony can work if it is treated as a supervised activity rather than a home.
Shade must be solid and must move with the sun.
A mesh roof is not shade. A solid panel that casts a real shadow is, and it needs repositioning through the day, or the run needs moving.
Never leave them unattended.
Balconies and gardens have cats, birds of prey, foxes and dogs. A run without a fixed solid roof is not secure against a bird, and a run that can be tipped or pushed is not secure against a dog.
Watch the surfaces.
Concrete, decking and tiles absorb and re-radiate heat, and a run on a hot balcony floor cooks from below even in shade. Grass is far better. A layer of towels over a hot hard surface is a poor substitute.
Wind and draughts.
Balconies are draughty. A guinea pig in a constant cold airflow is stressed and at higher risk of respiratory disease, and evening temperature drops on a balcony are abrupt.
Water and hay come outside too.
Both, in shaded positions, and check the bottle spout is not in the sun. Water that is unpleasantly warm will not be drunk.
Bring them in before it gets hot, not after.
Early morning and late evening are the usable windows in warm weather. Midday is not.
Check the grass.
No treated lawn, no weedkiller, no slug pellets, and check for plants growing through fences. Many common garden plants are toxic.
Setting the indoor space up for summer
Choose the coolest room and an interior wall.
Ground floor rather than upstairs, north-facing rather than south-facing in the northern hemisphere, away from radiators, appliances and electronics that produce heat.
Block the sun before it arrives.
Blackout blinds, curtains kept closed during the day, or reflective film on the glass. It is far more effective to keep heat out than to remove it afterwards.
Give them something cold to lie on.
A ceramic or stone tile placed in the enclosure. It stays below air temperature and guinea pigs will use it deliberately.
Frozen bottles, wrapped and escapable.
A plastic bottle of frozen water wrapped in a towel, placed at one end of the enclosure so the animals can move towards or away from it. Never place a bare frozen item against an animal and never limit the space so that they cannot leave it.
Move air without pointing it at them.
A fan directed at a wall or across the room increases evaporation and helps. A fan blowing straight onto guinea pigs is a draught.
More water, in more forms.
Bottles fail silently in the heat when the ball sticks or an air lock forms. Add an open bowl as well and check both twice daily.
Damp towel over part of the enclosure.
In dry heat, evaporation from a damp towel draped over one corner of an open-topped enclosure cools the air beneath it. Do not seal the enclosure and do not use this in already humid conditions, where it adds humidity without cooling.
Keep hay fresh and offered often.
Guinea pigs eat less in the heat, and reduced hay intake is what turns a hot afternoon into gut stasis two days later.

Give a choice of temperatures within the enclosure: a cool tile at one end, cover at the other, and space to move between them.
Emergency cooling, in order
Move the animal out of the heat first. Into the coolest room in the house, off any hot surface.
Wet the ears, feet and belly with cool water. Not iced. Use a damp cloth or your hands. These areas have the blood supply near the surface and are where cooling actually happens.
Put a damp towel underneath, not on top. A towel over the body traps heat against the animal. Underneath, with air moving over the top, it draws heat away.
Add airflow. A fan across the room, or a gently waved piece of card, over the damp animal.
Offer water but never force it. A collapsed or semi-conscious guinea pig will inhale liquid poured into its mouth. Put water within reach and leave it.
Stop cooling before the animal is cold. Continuing past the point of recovery causes the opposite problem.
Go to a vet regardless. Heatstroke damages the gut lining, the kidneys and the clotting system, and the consequences appear over the following days. A guinea pig that has been down and has come round still needs assessment and usually fluids.
Flystrike, the summer emergency owners forget
In warm weather, flies lay eggs on damp or soiled fur, most often around the rear end. Larvae hatch within hours and begin to consume tissue. Guinea pigs with soft stools, urine scald, obesity, arthritis, dental disease or long coats are all at higher risk, because any of those stops an animal keeping itself clean.
Check the rear end, the genital area and any damp fur twice a day through the warm months. Part the coat and look at the skin. Maggots or small pale eggs mean an immediate emergency: this is not something to bathe off and monitor.
Prevention is cleanliness and dryness. Spot clean daily, keep long coats trimmed around the rear, use fly screens on windows and over outdoor runs, and treat the underlying cause of any soiling.

Do not keep guinea pigs in a conservatory, sunroom or glazed balcony.
Do not leave them in a run without solid moving shade.
Do not leave them outdoors unattended.
Do not use ice, iced water or immersion for cooling.
Do not drape a towel over a hot animal.

When to get help
Go immediately for panting, drooling, unsteadiness, collapse, seizures, or any maggots found on the skin.
Go the same day for a guinea pig that has clearly overheated and then recovered, for one that has stopped eating hay after a hot day, for bloody diarrhoea, or for any damp soiled rear end in warm weather.
Book promptly for a guinea pig that is repeatedly lying flat and inactive in warm weather, or for any animal with a coat, weight or mobility problem that makes overheating and soiling more likely.

Active, eating hay and choosing where to sit is what a correctly placed enclosure looks like from the outside.
Bring the temperature reading from inside the enclosure, how long the animal was exposed and to what, what cooling you applied and for how long, the animal's weight, whether it has eaten and passed droppings since, and photographs of the rear end if there is any soiling. Expect the vet to measure body temperature, give fluids, check for gut and kidney effects, and keep the animal under observation for the delayed phase.
