Guinea pigs: the daily salad, vitamin C, calcium and bladder stones
Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C and the vitamin C in pellets degrades in the bag, so fresh vegetables matter. The complication is that the greens richest in vitamin C are often the ones highest in calcium or oxalate, which is where bladder stones come from. Quick answer
There is no such thing as a home-cooked meal for a guinea pig. They are hindgut fermenters built to process raw, fibrous plant material, and cooking destroys the structure that makes it work. What they need instead is hay in unlimited quantity, a measured amount of a complete pellet, and a daily portion of fresh raw vegetables.
Choosing those vegetables is harder than it looks, because the foods richest in vitamin C are frequently also the foods highest in calcium or oxalate, and the second of those is what forms bladder stones. Getting it right is a matter of rotation rather than of finding one perfect salad.
Fresh food is a daily supplement to hay, not a replacement for it. If the vegetables are reducing hay intake, the portion is too large.

Why vitamin C is not optional
Almost all mammals make their own vitamin C in the liver. Guinea pigs, like humans and a handful of other species, lack the final enzyme in that pathway and must take it in through food, every day.
Deficiency does not announce itself dramatically. It shows up as reluctance to move, a rough coat, swollen or painful joints, poor wound healing, bleeding around the gums, weight loss and a general appearance of an animal that has become old quickly. Because vitamin C is also needed for collagen, an animal that is short of it is more susceptible to almost everything else.
Pelleted food fortified with vitamin C is a reasonable base, with one important caveat: vitamin C is unstable. It degrades with exposure to light, heat, moisture and simply with time since manufacture. A bag that has been open on a warm shelf for two months does not deliver what the label states. Buy small bags, store them cool and dark and sealed, and check the date.
That instability is the practical argument for fresh vegetables. A daily portion of fresh food supplies vitamin C in a form that has not been sitting in a bag.
Vitamin C added to drinking water is the one method to avoid. It degrades quickly, it alters the taste so some guinea pigs drink less, and reduced water intake in a species prone to bladder stones is an actively bad outcome.
The tension nobody explains
Look at a list of vegetables ranked by vitamin C content and a list ranked by calcium content, and you will find the same foods near the top of both. Kale, parsley, dandelion and broccoli are all excellent sources of vitamin C and all carry substantial calcium.
Guinea pigs handle calcium differently from many mammals. They absorb a good proportion of what is in the diet and excrete the surplus through the kidneys, which is why normal guinea pig urine dries to a chalky white deposit. That is a normal finding, not a disease.
The problem arises when the calcium load is consistently high. Excess calcium in urine contributes to sludge and to calcium carbonate stones, and guinea pigs have a narrow urethra, particularly boars, in which a stone lodges easily. A urinary obstruction is a surgical emergency.
Oxalate is the second half of the problem. Spinach, parsley and chard are high in oxalate, which binds calcium and contributes to calcium oxalate stones, the other common type.
The resolution is not to avoid these foods entirely, because they are genuinely valuable, but to build the daily salad around low-calcium items and use the high-calcium and high-oxalate items as rotating extras rather than daily staples.
The other lever is water. Dilute urine is less likely to form crystals than concentrated urine. Multiple water sources, both a bottle and a bowl, water-rich vegetables such as cucumber, and clean fresh water changed daily all work in the right direction.

Portioning the salad stops it creeping upward. The commonly recommended figure is around a cupful per pig per day, adjusted to the animal.
Building a daily salad
Base it on bell pepper.
Bell peppers, particularly red and yellow, are high in vitamin C and comparatively low in calcium and oxalate, and most guinea pigs like them. A piece of pepper every day is the simplest reliable way to cover the vitamin C requirement.
Add a rotating leafy green.
Romaine and other loose-leaf lettuces, coriander, basil, dill, small amounts of rocket, and green leafy items generally. Rotate rather than repeat, because rotation limits the exposure to any one high-calcium or high-oxalate item and gives a broader nutrient profile.
Use the high-calcium greens as occasional items.
Kale, parsley, dandelion, broccoli, spring greens and chard are all worth including, and none of them should be the daily staple in a healthy adult with no special requirement.
Include a water-rich item.
Cucumber and celery contribute mainly water, which is useful in a species where urinary concentration matters. Cut celery across the fibres so that long strands are not left intact.
Add grass in season.
Hand-picked grass from a lawn that has not been treated with fertiliser, weedkiller or pesticide, fed fresh on the day, is excellent food and very close to what the species evolved on. Introduce it gradually in spring after a winter without it.
Keep fruit and carrot as treats.
Both are high in sugar. Carrot is not a daily vegetable, it is an occasional one, and fruit should be small and infrequent.
Serve at room temperature.
Cold food straight from the fridge is poorly tolerated by some guinea pigs and can contribute to gut upset. Take it out ahead of time.
Remove what is not eaten.
Fresh food spoils, and in warm weather uneaten vegetables attract flies to an enclosure containing an animal with a soft rear end. Take it out after a few hours.
What never goes in the bowl
Cooked food of any kind. The digestive system is built for raw fibrous plant material.
Mower clippings. Fermentation and bloat.
Iceberg lettuce. Very little nutritional value and a reliable cause of diarrhoea.
Onion, garlic, leek, chive and shallot.
Potato, potato peel and potato plant.
Avocado.
Rhubarb, including the leaves.
Tomato leaves and stems. The fruit in small amounts is fine; the green parts are not.
Beans, seeds, nuts and any grain-based treat.
Dairy, meat, bread, cereal, chocolate and anything processed.
Mushrooms.
Anything mouldy, wilted beyond freshness, or from a plant you cannot identify.
Houseplants and garden ornamentals unless you have verified them individually.
Introducing new foods
Guinea pigs are neophobic and they are also prone to gut upset when the diet changes suddenly.
Introduce one new item at a time. Offer a small piece alongside the familiar salad. Watch the droppings for the next two days. If they stay normal, increase gradually and add the item to the rotation. If they soften, remove it and go back to what worked.
Young guinea pigs that have never seen a particular food often refuse it for a long time, and the foods a guinea pig accepts as an adult are largely set by what it ate as a youngster. Variety early is worth building deliberately.
An animal moving to a new home should keep its previous diet for at least the first week, because a move plus a diet change produces loose stool that nobody can then interpret.

Hay is the part of the diet that keeps the cheek teeth worn and the gut moving. Any change to the fresh food that reduces hay intake is the wrong change.
What changes by age and circumstance
Under about six months. Growing animals need more calcium and protein, and alfalfa hay and alfalfa-based pellets are appropriate at this stage. The vegetable approach is the same.
Pregnant and nursing sows. Demand for both calcium and vitamin C rises steeply. Alfalfa is appropriate, higher-calcium greens become useful rather than something to limit, and this is a situation to discuss with a vet rather than to improvise, because pregnancy toxaemia and hypocalcaemia are both real risks in late pregnancy and early lactation.
Healthy adults. Grass hay such as timothy, orchard or meadow, a measured portion of a timothy-based pellet, and the rotating salad described above.
Animals with a stone history. This is not a situation for guesswork. Ask a vet for a plan. It will usually involve limiting high-calcium and high-oxalate vegetables, checking the mineral content of the pellet, maximising water intake, and monitoring.
Overweight animals. Reduce pellets and eliminate fruit and carrot before touching anything else. Never restrict hay, and do not remove vegetables, because that is where the vitamin C comes from.
Seniors and animals with dental disease. Softer leafy items are easier to manage, but the hay is still what keeps the cheek teeth worn. A guinea pig that is eating salad and refusing hay needs a dental examination, not a softer salad.
Where the usual advice goes wrong
"Cook them a balanced meal."
Cooking is the wrong direction entirely for a hindgut fermenter. Raw, fibrous and varied is what the system is built for.
"Vitamin C drops in the water are the easy way."
They degrade fast, they change the taste, and reduced drinking in a stone-prone species is a genuine harm. Deliver vitamin C in food.
"Kale every day because it is the healthiest green."
Kale is nutritious and it is also high in calcium. Daily kale in an adult with no special requirement pushes the urinary calcium load in the wrong direction. Rotate.
"Carrots are a vegetable, so they are a daily food."
Carrot is high in sugar and belongs with the treats.
"Lettuce is lettuce."
Iceberg is nutritionally empty and causes diarrhoea. Romaine and other loose-leaf types are entirely different and are perfectly good.
"White deposits in the urine mean something is wrong."
Chalky white residue is a normal consequence of how guinea pigs excrete calcium. What is not normal is blood, straining, crying while urinating, or a hunched posture, and any of those needs a vet.
"Pellets are the main food and hay is bedding."
This is the single most damaging misunderstanding in guinea pig keeping. Hay is the food. It keeps the continuously growing cheek teeth worn and keeps the gut moving, and no pellet or vegetable substitutes for it.
What never to do
Do not cook food for a guinea pig.
Do not feed mower clippings.
Do not add vitamin C to the drinking water.
Do not feed iceberg lettuce, onion family plants, potato, avocado or rhubarb.
Do not restrict hay for any reason, including weight control.
Do not make several diet changes at once.
Do not use a rabbit food or a mixed muesli product as the pellet, because rabbit pellets contain no added vitamin C and muesli mixes are eaten selectively.
Do not assume a guinea pig that is eating vegetables enthusiastically is eating enough. Hay intake is the number that matters.

Go the same day for straining to urinate, blood in the urine, crying while urinating, a hunched posture, a bloated or tight abdomen, or any guinea pig that has stopped eating hay or has fewer droppings than normal.
Go the same day for a guinea pig that is reluctant to move, has swollen or painful joints, is bleeding from the gums or has a rough staring coat, because those point at vitamin C deficiency and it responds well to treatment.
Book an appointment for weight loss, for a pig that eats vegetables but leaves hay, for drooling or a wet chin, and for any animal with a history of urinary problems so that the diet can be planned rather than guessed.
Ask a vet before feeding a pregnant or nursing sow differently, and before supplementing anything.

A guinea pig eating hay steadily, taking its salad with interest and holding its weight week to week is where the whole plan is aimed.
Bring a written list of exactly what is fed daily and weekly including brands, a photograph of the pellet packet, how much hay is used per week, what treats are given and by whom, whether anything is added to the water, the weekly weight record, and a description of the urine and droppings. If there is a urinary problem, expect the vet to want imaging and a urine sample, and to ask about the calcium content of the pellet as well as the vegetables.
