Fish white stringy faeces: what the droppings actually mean
Pale trailing faeces in a fish is an intestinal mucus cast, and the fish's appetite is what splits the causes. This guide separates an empty gut from internal flagellates, Camallanus worms, bacterial enteritis, constipation and water quality damage, explains why medication in the water cannot reach a parasite in the intestine, and sets out what to check before treating anything.

Quick answer
White, stringy, trailing faeces is one of the few things you can see from outside the glass that tells you something real about the inside of a fish. It has two broad meanings, and separating them takes one question: is the fish still eating?
Fish faeces take their colour from the food. When food stops moving through the gut, what comes out instead is a cast of the intestinal lining and its mucus, which is pale, translucent and stringy. So a fish that has gone off its food and is trailing white is producing an empty-gut cast. A fish that is eating well and still trailing white has something interfering with digestion, and internal parasites and gut infections are top of that list.

Why the gut tells you this much
A fish intestine is short, and food moves through it quickly. What emerges is mostly undigested residue coloured by what went in, which is why a fish fed a red-pigmented food produces reddish faeces and a fish on spirulina produces green ones. Owners regularly panic at a colour change that came from a new tub of food.
The lining of that intestine is a mucus-producing surface. Mucus protects the epithelium and lubricates passage. When nothing is passing, the lining continues to shed and the mucus continues to be produced, and the two combine into a thin white or translucent cast. That cast is what people describe as stringy or as looking like a thread hanging from the fish.
So the pale trailing faeces is a symptom of the gut being empty or barely functioning, and the diagnostic work is entirely about why.
Temperature matters here because fish are ectothermic. Digestion, immune function and drug metabolism all run at the pace the water sets. A fish held below its species range digests slowly, produces poor faeces, and mounts a weak response to whatever is causing the problem.
The main causes, and how to separate them
Simply not eating.
Any illness, any stress, any water quality problem, and any recent move can stop a fish eating. Give it a couple of days without food and it will produce white casts. The trail is a consequence, not the disease. Look for the reason the appetite went.
Internal flagellates.
Single-celled organisms of the Spironucleus and Hexamita group live in the intestine of many healthy fish at low levels. Under crowding, poor water, poor diet or transport stress, they proliferate. The picture that results is a fish that continues to eat while losing weight, with white stringy faeces, darkening colour, and eventually a hollow belly and a visible ridge along the back.
In cichlids, discus and angelfish this can progress to erosion of the small sensory pits on the head and along the lateral line, which aquarists call hole in the head. That combination of pitting plus wasting plus white faeces is a recognisable syndrome and it needs a specific medication rather than a general one.
Worms.
Camallanus is the one most owners meet. It is a nematode that lives in the rear intestine with its head embedded in the wall, and its tail protrudes from the vent as a short red or reddish-brown thread that can retract when the fish is disturbed. Livebearers such as guppies, mollies and platies are commonly affected. The important point is that it needs a specific anthelmintic and that the life cycle involves the substrate, so treating one fish in isolation does not clear the tank.
Other nematodes and tapeworms produce a similar white stringy picture without a visible worm, and are far more likely in wild-caught fish and in fish fed live foods.
Bacterial enteritis and systemic infection.
Gut infection produces mucus and inflammation. If the infection is systemic there will usually be other signs: red streaking in the fins or along the body, a swollen abdomen, scales standing out from the body, bulging eyes, or reddening at the vent. That combination is serious and moves fast.
Constipation.
Common, mechanical, and unfairly overlooked because owners jump to parasites. Dry flake and pellet swell after they are eaten. A fish fed a lot of dry food, particularly a deep-bodied fancy goldfish or a betta, ends up with a compacted gut, thick trailing faeces, and often buoyancy problems because the distended gut presses on the swim bladder.
The tells are that the fish is bright, keen to feed, and that the faeces is thick rather than thin and thread-like.
Water quality.
Ammonia and nitrite damage gill and gut epithelium, and one visible response is increased mucus everywhere including the intestine. Any investigation that skips the test kit is not an investigation.
Diet.
Stale food that has oxidised, food with a very high proportion of fillers, and a diet of only one item all produce poor digestion. Herbivorous fish fed a protein-heavy carnivore food get gut problems reliably.

A well-conditioned fish is full through the shoulder behind the head. A ridge appearing along the back is the wasting sign to catch.
Staging: catching it early
Early.
An occasional pale trail, appetite unchanged, weight unchanged. Most owners see this and wait. This is exactly the point where a water test, a diet review and a fortnight of careful observation is worth the effort.
Established.
Pale faeces most days, the fish takes food but spits some out or eats less enthusiastically, and the body outline begins to change. Look from directly above: a healthy fish is broad behind the head, and a wasting fish narrows there first. From the side, the ridge of the back becomes prominent before the belly looks obviously hollow.
Late.
Refusing food, sitting on the bottom or hanging near the surface, colour darkened or faded, fins clamped, and often a secondary skin or fin infection. At this stage medicated food is no longer an option because the fish will not eat, and the outlook is much poorer.
Group-level.
Whether one fish or several are affected changes the whole picture. One fish in a stable tank is more likely to have an individual problem. Several fish deteriorating over a couple of weeks after a new arrival is an introduced pathogen and a quarantine failure, and it changes what you do about the rest of the stock.
What to do, in order
Test the water first.
Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and temperature. Write the numbers down. Any detectable ammonia or nitrite is the first thing to fix, with water changes using dechlorinated water at matched temperature.
Establish who is eating and how much.
Feed a small amount and watch. Note which fish approach, which take food, which spit it out, and which ignore it entirely. This is the single most valuable observation you will make.
Check the body condition from above.
Photograph each affected fish from the side and from directly above, against a plain background, on the same day each week. Wasting is far easier to see in a series of photographs than in daily glances.
Look at the vent.
Red or brown threads mean worms. Redness and swelling at the vent points to inflammation or infection. A clear or white thread that is clearly faecal is a cast.
Review the food.
How old is it, how is it stored, is it appropriate for the species, and is it being soaked before feeding. Dry food soaked in tank water for a minute before it goes in swells outside the fish rather than inside it, which alone resolves a good proportion of constipation cases.
Then, and only then, consider medication.
Treat in a separate hospital tank where possible, so that the biological filter in the display tank is not destroyed and so that dose is calculated against a known, small water volume. Remove activated carbon from any filter running in the treatment tank, because carbon adsorbs medication and will silently remove the dose you just added.
Delivery matters. A parasite inside the intestine is not reached by a bath treatment at ordinary strengths. The standard route is medicated food, which is why the appetite question decides so much.
Get species-specific advice from an aquatic veterinarian or a specialist fish health service before choosing a product, particularly for invertebrate-containing tanks, for scaleless fish such as loaches, and for any tank with plants and shrimp.
Constipation, handled properly
If the fish is bright and eating and the faeces is thick and trailing rather than thin and white, treat it as a dietary problem.
Withhold food for a day or two. A healthy adult fish is not harmed by that and a rested gut often resolves the problem on its own.
Soak all dry food before feeding from then on.
Reduce the total amount fed. Overfeeding is the underlying driver in most cases.
Introduce more appropriate food for the species. For goldfish, more plant material and less dry protein helps, and many keepers use a blanched, deshelled pea successfully as an occasional item. For carnivorous species, small frozen foods such as daphnia are gentler on the gut than dry pellets.
Check the temperature is in the species range, because a cold fish digests poorly.
If buoyancy problems persist after the gut has emptied, the problem is not constipation and needs a different assessment.
What never to do
Do not add a general-purpose remedy before testing the water.
Do not stack medications, or follow one with another without a full water change in between.
Do not treat the display tank as your default. Losing the biological filter turns a gut problem into an ammonia crisis.
Do not leave carbon in the filter while medicating.
Do not raise the temperature sharply as a treatment in itself. Warmer water holds less oxygen and a compromised fish may not cope.
Do not force-feed a fish that has stopped eating.
Do not add new fish while an existing one is unwell.
Do not assume white faeces is always parasites. In fancy goldfish and bettas, diet is more often the answer.

When to get help
Seek aquatic veterinary advice promptly for a fish that has stopped eating entirely, for progressive weight loss, for red or brown threads at the vent, for red streaking in the body or fins, for a swollen abdomen with raised scales, and for more than one fish declining in the same tank.
Act the same day, on the water rather than the fish, if any ammonia or nitrite is detectable.
Book a considered conversation rather than an emergency one for occasional pale faeces in a fish that is eating and holding its weight, and use the time to review diet, feeding amount and quarantine practice.

Recovery looks like normal coloured faeces, a filling-out of the body behind the head, and a fish back at the front of the tank at feeding time.
Bring the written water test results, the tank volume, the full stock list, the date and source of the last fish added, exactly what you feed and how old it is, your weekly photographs, and a note of anything already added to the water.
