Getting hardness wrong is one of the quietest causes of poor health in home aquariums. It rarely kills quickly. It shortens lives.

Why there is no hydration to manage
Water crosses biological membranes from the dilute side toward the concentrated side. A freshwater fish's body fluids are more concentrated than the surrounding water, so water flows inward continuously through the gills and skin.
The fish does not drink to compensate. It does the opposite. Freshwater fish drink very little and excrete large volumes of very dilute urine to shed the water that keeps arriving.
At the same time, salts leak outward. Specialised cells in the gills pump those salts back in against the gradient, and that pumping runs on energy the fish must find from food.
Marine fish face the reverse problem. They lose water to the sea and do drink, then excrete the excess salt through their gills.
This is why the phrase hydration does not transfer. The management target is not fluid intake. It is the chemistry of the water the fish is bathed in.
What the right water looks like
Start with your tap water, not with the fish. Test general hardness and carbonate hardness on the water that comes out of your tap, after it has stood and been dechlorinated.
That reading is your baseline, and it is stable and free. Choosing fish that come from water like yours removes an entire category of ongoing problems.
Soft-water species include many South American tetras, dwarf cichlids and some barbs. Hard-water species include livebearers, many rainbowfish and the Rift Lake cichlids.
Stability is the second requirement. A tank that holds its hardness and pH between water changes is easier on fish than one that drifts, even if the drifting one occasionally passes through the ideal figure.
Substrate and decor influence this. Limestone and shell-based substrate raise hardness. Peat, bogwood and botanicals lower it and soften the water gradually.
Changes that mean act this week
Growth that stalls in young fish despite good feeding.
Sustained osmoregulatory effort competes with growth for energy. Stalled growth in clean water is a hardness question worth asking.
Faded colour and clamped fins that have no other explanation.
Chronic mismatch shows as a fish that never quite looks right rather than one that is acutely ill.
Eggs that never hatch, or fry that die early.
Reproduction is far more sensitive to hardness than adult survival. Many soft-water species live for years in hard water but never breed.
pH that drops steadily between water changes.
This is carbonate hardness being consumed by the biological filter. It ends in a sudden crash if left unaddressed.
Fish distressed immediately after a water change.
Source water that differs sharply in hardness or temperature from the tank causes acute osmotic stress. Match the water, and add it slowly.
The routine that keeps water chemistry stable
What never to do
Do not add table salt or aquarium salt as a routine tonic. Many catfish, loaches, and soft-water species tolerate it poorly, and it does not substitute for correct hardness.
Do not use pure reverse osmosis or distilled water on its own. It has almost no buffering capacity and the pH can crash.
Do not adjust pH with chemical buffers while ignoring carbonate hardness. The buffer is consumed and the pH rebounds.
Do not move a fish between very different water chemistries quickly. Acclimatise slowly over an extended period.
Do not assume bottled or filtered drinking water is suitable. Domestic filters vary widely in what they remove.

Contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian if fish are in persistently poor condition despite clean water tests, or if you see repeated unexplained losses in a tank that appears well maintained.
Get advice before making any large change to water chemistry in a stocked tank. The correction is often more dangerous than the original mismatch.
