Fish through the year: the seasonal risks in a pond and a tank

Fish losses cluster into four seasonal patterns with mechanisms you can act on. Most fish losses are seasonal, and most of them are predictable weeks in advance.

Fish do not die randomly through the year. Losses cluster into four seasonal patterns, and each has a mechanism you can act on: the spring immunity gap, the summer dawn oxygen crash, the autumn organic load, and the winter gas exchange problem under ice.

The common thread is that water temperature controls two things at once. It sets how much oxygen the water can hold and how fast the fish burns it, and it sets how fast the fish's immune system works. In spring those two move out of step, and that is why spring kills more pond fish than winter does.

  • Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen while fish, bacteria and plants all consume more of it. The lowest oxygen of the whole year is just before dawn on a hot, still night.
  • Spring is the most dangerous season in a pond. Parasites and bacteria resume multiplying at lower temperatures than the fish's immune system needs to defend itself.
  • Under complete ice, the danger is not cold. It is that gases cannot exchange. Keep an opening, and never break ice by hitting it.
  • Feed by water temperature, measured at fish depth, not by the calendar or by how hungry the fish look.
  • Net the pond before leaf fall. Decomposing leaves consume oxygen, acidify the water and build the sludge that produces toxic gas under ice.

A blow on ice transmits a pressure wave through the water that can concuss and kill fish resting beneath it. To open an opening, stand a pan of hot water on the ice and let it melt through, or use a pond de-icer. Separately, mains water contains chlorine or chloramine at levels that destroy gill tissue and the filter bacteria on contact, so every top-up and water change must be dechlorinated first.

The two mechanisms behind every seasonal problem

Oxygen and temperature move in opposite directions.

The amount of oxygen water can dissolve falls as the water warms. At the same time, every biological process in the pond speeds up: the fish burn more oxygen, the filter bacteria burn more oxygen, and the bacteria decomposing sludge and leaves burn more oxygen.

Add the daily cycle. Plants and algae photosynthesise in daylight and add oxygen, then respire through the night and take it back out. The result is a daily oxygen curve with its peak in late afternoon and its trough just before dawn.

That is why fish are found gasping at first light after a hot, still night, and why the owner who checks at midday sees nothing wrong.

Immunity lags behind pathogens in spring.

Fish are ectotherms. Their adaptive immune response, the part that produces antibody and specific defence, works slowly at low temperatures and takes weeks to come back up as water warms.

Many parasites and opportunistic bacteria do not have that constraint. They start multiplying as soon as the water lifts out of winter, at temperatures where the fish is still effectively unarmed and has just spent months living off its reserves.

The result is a well-recognised pattern of ulcers, fungal patches, fin damage and deaths in the first warm weeks of the year, in ponds that looked fine all winter.

Spring: the season that actually kills

Treat spring as the high-risk period and plan for it rather than reacting.

Do not add new fish in early spring. New arrivals bring pathogens into a population with no immune reserve. Wait until the water is properly warm and the existing fish are eating and behaving normally.

Look at every fish deliberately. As the water clears and fish become active, check for raised scales, red patches, white cottony growth, ragged fins, cloudy eyes, and any sore at the base of a fin or on the flank. Ulcers begin as a small red spot and become craters quickly.

Watch for flashing. Fish scraping their flanks on the bottom, on plants or on the wall is the earliest sign of skin and gill parasites, and it appears before any visible damage.

Do not treat blind. Spring problems have several possible causes and treatments that work against one can harm another. Where the fish are valuable, a skin scrape and microscope examination by an experienced dealer or an aquatic vet answers in minutes what guessing takes weeks to get wrong.

Restart feeding gradually. Begin with a low-protein food when the temperature supports digestion, following the guidance on the food packaging, and build up as the water warms.

Service the filter carefully. Filter bacteria have been dormant and their population is at its lowest. Rinse media in pond water rather than tap water, do not replace everything at once, and expect a period of reduced biological capacity.

Summer: the dawn crash

Aerate more than you think you need. Surface agitation is what actually gets oxygen into water. A fountain, a venturi, a waterfall or an air pump with stones all work. In hot weather, run them through the night, which is exactly when owners often turn them off for quiet.

Watch the stocking and the feeding. More fish and more food both mean more oxygen demand and more waste. Hot weather is the time to feed less, not more.

Shade the water. Floating plants, a sail or a shade over part of the surface reduces heating and slows algae.

Beware the sudden clear pond. When a heavy algal bloom dies at once, whether from a treatment, a cold night or a run of dull days, the decomposition consumes a large amount of oxygen in a short time. If you treat blanketweed or algae in warm weather, do it in stages and aerate heavily throughout.

Expect trouble before a thunderstorm. Warm, humid, still, low-pressure conditions reduce oxygen exchange at the surface. Many summer fish kills happen in exactly that weather.

Keep the level up. Evaporation concentrates waste and reduces the volume that has to absorb it. Top up with dechlorinated water, and top up gradually rather than in one cold rush.

In a tank, the same rules apply on a smaller scale and a faster clock. A small heated aquarium in a hot room can overheat within hours. Lower the water level slightly to increase surface agitation from the filter outflow, add an airstone, float a sealed container of frozen water rather than putting ice directly in, and never cool a tank fast.

Autumn: the season you prepare in

Autumn work is what makes winter and spring survivable.

Net the pond before the leaves fall, not after. Leaves in the water decompose, consume oxygen, release tannins and organic acids that lower pH, and build the sludge layer that becomes dangerous under ice.

Cut back and remove dying marginal and aquatic plants before they collapse into the water.

Reduce the sludge, while the water is still warm enough for the fish to tolerate the disturbance. Sludge is where anaerobic decomposition produces hydrogen sulphide, and stirring a deep sludge layer in cold water can release it into the water column.

Check the equipment before you need it. Air pump, de-icer, spare heater for a tank, and a battery-powered air pump for a power cut.

Feed the fish up while they can still digest properly, then taper as the water cools, following the temperature guidance on the food.

Test the water and fix any problem now. Correcting chemistry in autumn is far easier than correcting it in a cold pond in January.

Winter: gas exchange, not cold

Healthy pond goldfish and koi tolerate cold water well in a pond deep enough not to freeze solid. What they do not tolerate is being sealed in.

Under complete ice, gases cannot exchange. Oxygen is not replenished from the air, and carbon dioxide and gases from decomposing matter accumulate. Fish are lost to that, not to the temperature.

Keep an opening. A floating de-icer, or an air stone positioned at mid depth rather than on the bottom, keeps a patch clear. Position matters: an air stone on the pond floor circulates the whole volume and destroys the slightly warmer layer at the bottom where the fish are resting.

Never smash the ice. The pressure wave from a blow travels through water efficiently and can kill fish beneath it. Melt a hole instead.

Consider turning off the waterfall and fountain. Both mix the pond thoroughly and can supercool the entire volume in a hard freeze, removing the thermal refuge at the bottom.

Stop feeding when the temperature says so. Fish in cold water cannot digest, and undigested food in the gut causes real harm. They are living on stored reserves, which is normal and expected.

Leave them alone. Netting, moving or handling fish in cold water is far more stressful and damaging than at any other time.

Indoors, winter risks are different: dry heated rooms increase evaporation, cold draughts near windows destabilise tank temperature, and power cuts are more likely. A spare heater and a battery air pump cost little and prevent the most common cold-weather tank loss.

Feeding by temperature, not by appetite

This is the single most misunderstood part of pond keeping, and it explains a large share of spring deaths.

Digestion in fish is enzymatic and temperature dependent. In cold water, food moves slowly and is incompletely digested, and undigested protein in the gut ferments. Fish will still take food enthusiastically in water far too cold to process it, because appetite and digestion are not controlled by the same thing.

The practical rules follow from that. Buy a pond thermometer and measure at the depth the fish are at, not at the surface where the sun hits. Follow the temperature ranges printed on the food you are using. Move to a low-protein, wheatgerm-based food as the water cools, because it is formulated to be digestible at lower temperatures, and stop feeding entirely when the temperature falls below the range on the label. In spring, restart cautiously and build up.

Feeding a hungry-looking fish in cold water is a kindness that harms it.

Where species differ

Koi and common goldfish are cold-tolerant and overwinter outdoors in a properly deep pond in temperate climates.

Fancy goldfish with modified body shapes, such as orandas, ranchu, lionheads and bubble-eyes, handle cold badly and are prone to buoyancy problems. Many keepers bring them indoors for winter, and that is a reasonable decision rather than an overcautious one.

Golden orfe are noticeably more sensitive to low oxygen than goldfish or koi. In a mixed pond they are usually the first to show distress and the first to die, which makes them an early warning as well as a liability in a warm summer.

Sturgeon need high dissolved oxygen, sink rather than float, feed on the bottom and cannot compete for floating food. They are also sensitive to several common pond treatments and to salt, so any medication plan in a pond containing sturgeon has to be checked specifically for them.

Tropical fish must never be overwintered outdoors, and that includes tropical species sold for summer ponds.

Newly imported or recently purchased fish of any species have the least reserve and the most suppressed immune function, which is why the timing of purchases matters so much.

Never break ice by hitting or walking on it.

Never top up with untreated mains water. Chlorine and chloramine damage gills and kill filter bacteria immediately, and chloramine is not removed by standing the water.

Never feed protein-rich food in cold water.

Never treat a whole pond for algae in one dose in hot weather.

Never medicate without knowing what you are treating. Several common pond treatments are harmful to particular species, to invertebrates, and to the filter, and repeated blind treatment is a common way to lose a pond.

Never add fish in early spring or during a heatwave.

Never rely on the pump alone for oxygen. Water movement without surface agitation adds very little.

Never move or net fish in very cold water unless there is no alternative.

Never assume a fish that looks fine at midday was fine at dawn.

What the vet or specialist will want

Bring water test results, not a description of the water. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and carbonate hardness, with the date and the test method.

Bring the temperature at depth, the pond volume or tank volume, the stocking list, the filtration and turnover, and when the filter was last cleaned.

Bring the timeline: when the first fish was affected, how many are affected now, what changed in the weeks before, and every treatment or product added with dates and doses.

Photograph or film affected fish in the water rather than lifting them out, and photograph any lesion clearly.

If a fish has died, keeping it cool rather than frozen preserves far more diagnostic information, and a fresh carcass examined promptly can identify a problem that would otherwise take months to work out.

Why do my fish die in spring when they survived the whole winter?
Because their immune systems recover more slowly than the pathogens do. After months at low temperature, fish reserves are at their lowest and their adaptive immunity is still effectively offline, while parasites and opportunistic bacteria are already multiplying. This is the classic spring die-off, and it is prevented by good autumn preparation and careful spring observation rather than by treatment after the fact.
Should I run the pump and waterfall through winter?
It depends on how hard the freeze is. In a mild winter, keeping the water moving maintains gas exchange and is helpful. In a hard freeze, a waterfall mixes the whole pond and removes the slightly warmer bottom layer where fish rest. Many keepers switch off the waterfall and run a single air stone at mid depth instead.
My fish are gasping at the surface. Is the water dirty?
Possibly, but do not assume it. Gasping at the surface means low dissolved oxygen or damaged gills. Aerate first, because that costs nothing and buys time, then test the water for ammonia and nitrite, then consider gill damage from parasites or chemistry. Adding a chemical before you have aerated wastes the window that matters.
Is a pond heater worth it?
For most temperate ponds with cold-tolerant fish, a de-icer that keeps a small area open is what matters, not heating the pond. Heating a whole outdoor pond is expensive and generally unnecessary. The exceptions are ponds too shallow to avoid freezing solid and ponds holding fish that should not be outdoors in winter at all.

Act immediately, before seeking advice, if fish are gasping at the surface: add aeration, stop feeding, and do a partial dechlorinated water change. Oxygen is the one thing you should never wait for a second opinion on.

Get expert help within days for ulcers or sores, white cottony growth, raised scales, several fish flashing, cloudy or bulging eyes, or any death that is not clearly explained.

Get help urgently for more than one death in a week, or for any sudden change affecting several fish at once, which almost always means a water quality or oxygen event rather than a disease.

Contact an aquatic vet or a specialist dealer with a microscope rather than treating blind. In fish medicine the diagnosis is usually cheap and fast, and the wrong treatment is neither.
