Fish: staple foods versus fresh and home-prepared diets

A formulated staple is the base of almost every aquarium diet, and fresh food belongs on top of it rather than instead of it. This guide covers choosing a food by mouth position and gut type, reading an aquarium label, why food degrades in the tub, and the specific failures of fresh diets including thiaminase in raw fish and shellfish, muscle-meat deficiency and feeder fish.

A good commercial staple is the base of almost every aquarium diet, because it is formulated to be nutritionally complete and to stay intact in water long enough to be eaten. Fresh and home-prepared foods sit on top of that base. They add variety, moisture, fibre and a strong feeding response, and used alone they cause deficiency disease.

The decision that matters more than fresh against commercial is whether the food matches the animal. A herbivore fed a high-protein carnivore pellet develops digestive disease. A bottom-dwelling catfish fed floating flake starves in a tank full of food. A pufferfish fed only soft food ends up unable to close its mouth.

  • Choose the staple by the fish's feeding anatomy first: mouth position, gut type and where in the water column it feeds.
  • Fish food degrades in the tub. Buy a size you will finish, keep it sealed, cool and dark, and never store it on a warm humid tank hood.
  • Raw fish, prawn and mussel contain thiaminase, which destroys vitamin B1. A diet built on them causes neurological disease.
  • Never use feeder goldfish or minnows. They carry disease, are nutritionally poor and are a thiaminase source.
  • Vegetables for herbivores are blanched, weighted down, and removed after a few hours before they foul the water.

Why fish food is harder to formulate than dog or cat food

Everything soluble starts leaving immediately.
Once a pellet is in water, water-soluble vitamins and free amino acids begin diffusing out. A food that disintegrates in seconds delivers a fraction of its label to the fish and the rest to the filter. Water stability is therefore part of the nutrition, not just a convenience.

Vitamin C is fragile twice over.
Plain ascorbic acid is destroyed by the heat of extrusion and degrades further in a warm, humid, half-empty tub. Good manufacturers use a protected form. This matters because vitamin C deficiency in fish causes poor wound healing, gill problems and spinal deformity, and it develops silently over months.

The fats oxidise.
Aquatic diets are rich in long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, which are exactly the ones that go rancid fastest in air and light. Oxidised fat is not just less nutritious; it damages the liver.

There is no single ornamental fish standard.
Unlike dog and cat food, there is no widely enforced complete-and-balanced standard covering every ornamental species. That places more weight on species-specific formulation and on the manufacturer's track record than on any single claim on the tub.

Match the food to the anatomy

Mouth position tells you where the fish feeds.
A mouth angled upwards means a surface feeder, and flake or floating pellets suit it. A mouth pointing straight forward means a mid-water feeder, best served by slow-sinking granules. A mouth on the underside of the head means a bottom feeder, and it needs sinking wafers or tablets that reach the substrate.

Gut length tells you what it is built to digest.
Herbivorous fish have long intestines and are adapted to eat small amounts almost continuously, with plant fibre passing through. Carnivores have short guts adapted to concentrated protein in occasional larger meals. Feeding a herbivore a rich carnivore food overloads a system that is not designed to process it, and it is a well-recognised cause of digestive disease in plant-eating cichlids.

Pellet size matters more than owners expect.
A pellet too large for the mouth gape is picked up, mouthed and dropped, and owners interpret that as fussiness or illness. A pellet far too small in a large fish means it can never take in enough per mouthful. Buy the size grade made for your fish, not the one that happens to be in stock.

Timing suits some species and not others.
Nocturnal catfish and many loaches will not compete with fast daytime feeders. Their food goes in after the lights go out.

Reading an aquarium food label

Ingredients are listed by weight before processing.
The first few entries carry most of the meaning. Named whole ingredients tell you more than vague category terms, and a long list of unnamed derivatives tells you little.

"Crude" means chemically measured, not digestible.
Crude protein counts nitrogen, and nitrogen from a poorly digestible source counts the same as nitrogen from a highly digestible one. A high crude protein figure from a cheap source is not better food.

Ash is a proxy for mineral content.
It reflects what remains after everything organic is burned away. Very high ash usually points to raw materials with a lot of bone or shell relative to flesh.

Colour enhancers change the fish, not its health.
Astaxanthin, spirulina and similar pigments intensify red and orange colouration. They are not harmful, and they are also not a measure of quality.

Match the formulation to the species group.
Foods intended for herbivorous cichlids, for marine herbivores, for carnivorous predators and for goldfish are genuinely different products. Using a general community flake for a specialist feeder is the most common formulation error.

Check the date and the pack size.
A small tub bought twice a year beats a large tub bought once, because the second half of a large tub is usually the part that has degraded.

What fresh and frozen foods genuinely add

They are worth using, provided they are supplements.

Feeding response and behaviour.
Fish that hunt or graze in the wild show more natural behaviour when food requires work. That is a welfare benefit in its own right.

Fibre for herbivores.
Blanched courgette, deshelled peas, spinach and prepared algae sheets give plant eaters the bulk their digestive tract is built for. Blanch briefly to soften, weight the piece down, and remove what is left after a few hours before it starts to break down.

Moisture and variety.
A varied diet is more forgiving of any single food's shortcomings, and it keeps fish willing to accept different items, which matters enormously when a fish is unwell and needs medicated or tempting food.

Conditioning for breeding.
Many species will not come into condition on dry food alone.

Where home-prepared and fresh diets go wrong

Thiaminase.
Many raw fish, prawns, mussels and other aquatic invertebrates contain the enzyme thiaminase, which destroys thiamine. A fish fed mainly on these develops thiamine deficiency over weeks to months. The signs are neurological and alarming: loss of balance, spiralling or spinning, tremors, darkening in colour, and eventually convulsions. Owners usually assume poisoning or a swim bladder problem. Brief cooking denatures thiaminase, and a formulated staple alongside prevents the problem in the first place.

Fillets and prawn meat are not whole prey.
Bone, viscera and skin carry most of the calcium, fat-soluble vitamins and trace minerals. A diet of muscle meat is deficient regardless of how fresh it is.

Mammalian meat digests badly.
Fish do not process mammalian fat efficiently. Diets built around beefheart and similar ingredients have a long association with fatty liver and digestive problems in the species where they were popular.

Pollution load.
Fresh food fragments and disperses. What is not eaten within minutes decomposes in the substrate and in the filter, raising ammonia and nitrate. The nutritional gain has to be weighed against the water quality cost.

Disease introduction.
Live foods collected from ponds or bought untreated can bring in parasites and bacterial disease. Feeder goldfish and minnows are worse still: they combine disease risk, thiaminase and a poor nutritional profile in one package, and there is no situation in which they are the best available option.

Freeze-thaw damage.
Frozen food that has partly thawed in transit or in a door shelf and refrozen has oxidised fats and degraded vitamins. Buy from a source that keeps it solidly frozen, and do not refreeze.

Gel diets need a real recipe.
Commercial gel foods are useful, particularly for herbivores and for medicating. Home-made gels are only as good as their formulation, and the gelatin or agar base contributes nothing nutritionally, so a recipe that is mostly binder is mostly empty.

Storage, which quietly ruins good food

Oxygen, light, warmth and humidity are the four enemies.
Every one of them accelerates fat oxidation and vitamin loss.

Never store food on the tank hood.
It is the warmest, most humid spot in the room. It is also where almost everyone keeps it.

Keep the tub closed and the scoop dry.
A wet scoop returned to the tub introduces moisture, which causes clumping and mould.

Split a large tub.
Keep a small working container and freeze or seal the rest, taking out a few weeks at a time.

Trust your nose.
Fresh dry fish food smells faintly of fish and grain. Rancid food smells sharp and oily. If it smells wrong, or has clumped, or has changed colour, discard it. Fish will often refuse it before you notice, and a sudden refusal of a long-accepted food is a reason to open a fresh tub before assuming illness.

What changes by species

Goldfish and koi.
They have no true stomach, so food passes through more or less continuously and they are built to graze rather than to eat one large meal. Floating pellets encourage gulping at the surface, and swallowed air contributes to the buoyancy problems fancy varieties are prone to. Soak pellets before feeding or use a sinking formulation. They are also heavy waste producers, which is one of several reasons they need a properly filtered tank rather than a bowl.

Herbivorous Lake Malawi cichlids.
Plant-based staple, low animal protein, and no rich frozen protein foods. Their digestive tract is not built for it and the consequences are serious.

Marine herbivores such as tangs.
They graze all day in the wild. They need algae available for much of the day, not two meals.

Pufferfish.
Their teeth grow continuously and are worn down by crushing hard-shelled prey. A puffer fed only soft food develops overgrown teeth and eventually cannot eat, which requires veterinary trimming under sedation. Snails and shell-on foods are a husbandry requirement rather than a treat.

Bettas.
Small carnivores with a small stomach. Pellet size and portion both matter, and a betta will readily eat far more than it should.

Corydoras and loaches.
Sinking food, delivered where the fast swimmers above will not intercept it, often after lights out.

Fry.
Food particle size and feeding frequency are both critical, and fry cannot tolerate the fasting that adult fish handle easily. Powdered or liquid fry foods, then newly hatched brine shrimp, then graded granules as they grow.

Wild-caught fish.
Many do not recognise dry food as food at all. Introduce it alongside what they already accept and expect the process to take weeks.

Switching a fish onto a new food

Offer both together.
Put a small amount of the new food in at the same time as the accepted one, ideally slightly before. Fish learn by watching tank mates eat.

Feed when they are keenest.
Just before a normal feeding time, when the fish are already at the front expecting food.

Reduce competition.
In a busy tank a timid fish never gets to sample anything new. Feed at more than one point in the tank.

Do not rush an unwell fish.
A fish that is not eating well is not the fish to experiment on. Fix the water and the temperature first, then the food.

Adult fish tolerate short fasts, fry do not.
Most healthy adult fish can go days without food, which is why an unhurried transition is safe. That latitude does not extend to fry, to very small species, or to fish already in poor condition.

Is a purely commercial diet enough on its own?
For most community fish, a good species-appropriate staple can maintain a fish well for years. Adding variety improves behaviour and gives you a safety margin against any single food's shortcomings, and for some specialist species such as marine herbivores and pufferfish, additional foods are a requirement rather than an improvement.
How do I know if my food has gone off?
Smell it. Fresh food has a faint fish and grain smell; degraded food smells sharp and oily. Clumping, a change in colour, and a sudden loss of interest from fish that previously ate it are all indicators. When in doubt, replace it. It costs far less than treating a deficiency.
Can I feed my fish vegetables from the kitchen?
For herbivorous species, yes, and it is genuinely useful. Blanch briefly, do not season anything, weight the piece down or clip it, and take out what is left after a few hours. Avoid anything oily, salted, or from a prepared meal.
My fish spits the pellets out. Is it ill?
Check the pellet size against its mouth first, and check the food is not stale. If both are fine and the fish is otherwise normal, try a different form such as a slow-sinking granule. If the fish is also less active, has changed colour, or is breathing hard, test the water and treat it as a health problem rather than a food preference.

When to get help

Seek advice from a vet who sees fish, or an experienced aquatic specialist, if a fish loses balance, spins, tremors or darkens noticeably, particularly on a mainly fresh or frozen diet. These are the signs of thiamine deficiency and they need dietary correction quickly.

Get help too for a fish with a developing spinal curve, for poor wound healing or persistent fin damage, and for a fish that has slowly lost condition over months on an unchanged diet. These are the slow nutritional failures, and they are much easier to fix early.

Bring the food tub and your water test results. Between them they explain most feeding problems, and a description of the food is never as useful as the label itself.
