Fish skeletons: water hardness, vitamin C and what a bent spine means

Fish absorb calcium directly from the water at the gills, so hardness matters more than any supplement and there is no fish equivalent of reptile UVB. What food must supply is phosphorus and vitamins, and vitamin C degrades fast in stale flake. Quick answer

Fish do not build their skeletons the way land animals do. A fish takes calcium directly out of the water across its gills, so the mineral content of your tap water is genuinely part of the diet, not an afterthought.

That has two practical consequences. Choosing species that suit your water matters more than adding anything to it. And when a fish develops a bent spine, the cause is far more often disease, genetics or an electrical fault than a shortage of calcium.

There is no fish equivalent of the reptile UVB problem. Fish do not need ultraviolet light to use calcium, and no lamp will help a fish's skeleton.

  • Calcium is absorbed from the water at the gills. General hardness, often labelled GH, is the number that reflects it.
  • Match your species to your tap water rather than dosing minerals into a tank.
  • Vitamin C is required for collagen and is a documented cause of skeletal deformity when deficient. It degrades quickly in opened, stale food.
  • A progressive bend in an adult fish that is also getting thinner points strongly at mycobacteriosis, which is transmissible to people.
  • A sudden bend, especially in more than one fish at once, can be an electrical fault in the tank.

Mycobacteriosis in fish can infect people.

The organisms behind fish tuberculosis cause slow, stubborn skin infections in humans, typically on the hands and forearms, entering through a cut or a graze during tank maintenance. Anyone with a wound, or who is immunocompromised, should wear long waterproof gloves for aquarium work. Never siphon a tank by mouth. If you develop a persistent nodule or ulcer on a hand or arm after aquarium work, tell your doctor you keep fish, because it changes the treatment entirely.

Where a fish actually gets its calcium

A freshwater fish lives in a medium far more dilute than its own body fluids. Water is constantly moving into it by osmosis and salts are constantly moving out. To stay alive, it runs specialised cells in the gills that actively pump ions inwards against that gradient.

Calcium is one of those ions. A fish takes up calcium directly from the surrounding water, and in fresh water this uptake accounts for the majority of its calcium supply. Diet contributes, but the water does the heavy lifting.

This is why hardness matters for more than plants and snails. General hardness, the value most test kits label GH, reflects the dissolved calcium and magnesium available to the fish. Carbonate hardness, KH, is a different measurement: it describes the buffering that stops pH from swinging.

Calcium in the water does a second job. It stabilises the gill epithelium and reduces the rate at which the fish loses its own salts. Very soft water therefore makes a fish work harder at ion regulation continuously, which is a low-level energy cost on top of any mineral shortfall.

The practical conclusion is not to dose calcium into a freshwater tank. It is to choose fish that come from water like yours.

Fish that do well in harder water include livebearers such as guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails, African rift lake cichlids, and goldfish, which tolerate a broad range but do not thrive in very soft, acidic water.

Fish that do well in softer water include most South American tetras, discus, many rasboras and many catfish from blackwater habitats.

If you keep a hard-water species in very soft water, the effect is chronic rather than dramatic: poor growth, thin or damaged scales, reduced breeding, and greater sensitivity to everything else. If you keep a soft-water species in very hard water, the problems tend to show as failure to breed and reduced longevity.

Marine and reef tanks are a separate case. There, calcium is consumed by corals and coralline algae building skeletons of their own, and testing and dosing calcium, alkalinity and magnesium is routine reef husbandry rather than fish nutrition.

What food has to supply

If the water is providing calcium, food is providing everything that calcium needs in order to be used.

Phosphorus. Bone is calcium phosphate, and dietary phosphorus is the part the water does not readily supply. Prepared foods contain it.

Vitamin C. This is the one that matters most and the one most likely to be missing. Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis, and collagen is the protein scaffold that mineral is laid down on. Deficiency during growth is a documented cause of skeletal deformity in fish, along with poor wound healing, and most fish cannot make their own.

Vitamin D. Fish obtain it from the diet. There is no ultraviolet requirement and no equivalent of reptile metabolic bone disease driven by lighting.

Vitamin A, vitamin E and trace minerals. All contribute to normal development, and all are present in a decent prepared food and in a varied diet.

The failure point is almost never the recipe. It is the age of the food.

Vitamin C in particular degrades with exposure to air, light, warmth and humidity. A tub of flake opened a year ago, kept on a warm shelf above a lit aquarium, and dipped into with wet fingers, has lost a great deal of what the label claims. The label describes the food when it was packed.

What to do about it.

Buy the smallest container you will realistically use within a few months, not the economy tub.

Keep it sealed, cool, dark and dry, and away from the top of the tank where warm humid air rises.

Never put wet fingers or a wet spoon into the container.

Write the date you opened it on the lid, and discard what is left when it is clearly old.

Feed a variety rather than one product for years. Rotating between a good staple, frozen foods and occasional fresh items covers gaps that no single food fills.

What a bent spine actually means

This is the sign that brings owners to this subject, and calcium is rarely the answer. Work through the alternatives.

Genetic and developmental.

Present from a young age, not progressive, and the fish is otherwise healthy, feeds normally and grows. Common in heavily line-bred ornamental varieties and in fish from crowded, inbred production. Some varieties are deliberately shortened in the body, which is a spinal alteration selected for by breeders rather than a disease. A fish with a fixed, stable curve that swims and eats well can live a normal life.

Nutritional.

Develops during the growth period, and typically affects several fish of the same age in the same tank, which is the distinguishing feature. Associated with long-term feeding on a single stale food, or with fry raised on an inadequate diet. Once the skeleton has formed, correcting the diet stops further deformity but does not straighten what has already set.

Mycobacteriosis.

The most important one to recognise. A chronic bacterial disease that produces granulomas throughout the internal organs and, over time, spinal curvature. The picture is slow and cumulative: a fish that continues to eat but becomes progressively thinner, with a hollow belly and a prominent back, sometimes with skin ulcers, scale loss, a bulging eye, or a ragged fin that will not heal. Fish are lost one at a time over months rather than all at once.

It is generally not curable in fish, treatment attempts are unrewarding, and the organisms persist in the system. It also infects people, which is why gloves and covered cuts matter.

Electrical injury.

A faulty heater, pump or other equipment leaking current into the water causes violent muscle contraction, and vertebral fractures follow. The clue is sudden onset, sometimes in more than one fish at once, sometimes with twitching, erratic swimming or fish avoiding one area of the tank. If you suspect this, unplug everything at once and do not put your hands in the water first. Aquarium electrics should be on a residual current device.

Trauma.

A single fish, sudden onset, often after netting, a jump, a fight, or a collision. Non-progressive once healed.

Parasitic disease.

Certain parasites damage cartilage and nervous tissue and cause deformity, more often in pond and coldwater settings than in tropical aquaria.

Old age.

Long-lived fish, particularly goldfish and koi, can develop mild curvature late in life.

Not actually skeletal.

A fish that tilts or curls while swimming but is straight when resting usually has a buoyancy or swim bladder problem rather than a bone problem. Look at the fish at rest, from above, to tell them apart.

Staging, and what to record

Early. A slight lateral deviation visible only when you look down on the fish from directly above. Owners almost never notice from the side.

Established. An obvious C or S shape, still with normal feeding and swimming, though the fish may be slower or less able to hold position in a current.

Late. Difficulty swimming upright, inability to reach food, weight loss, and secondary problems from resting on the substrate.

Photograph the fish from directly above and from the side, in the same place with the same light, once a month. Progression is the single most diagnostically useful piece of information, and it is impossible to judge from memory. A stable curve and a progressing curve mean completely different things.

What you can actually control

Quarantine every new fish. Mycobacteriosis and most other chronic disease arrives with new arrivals, and once it is in a system it is very difficult to remove.

Do not buy a fish that is already curved, even at a discount, and do not add it to an established tank.

Test GH and KH once, then choose stock accordingly. Chasing numbers with chemical adjusters produces unstable water, which is worse for fish than a steady value slightly outside the ideal.

Keep food fresh and varied.

Feed appropriately rather than generously. Overfeeding damages water quality, which stresses fish and undermines everything else.

Put tank electrics on a residual current device, and replace heaters that are cracked, discoloured or old.

Net carefully, or avoid netting. Use a container to move fish where you can, since netting is a common cause of spinal and jaw injury in large-finned and deep-bodied fish.

Do not chase remedies. There is no supplement that straightens a spine, and treating a fish with unnecessary medication adds a chemical insult to an animal that is already compromised.

Does my fish need a calcium supplement?
In a freshwater tank, almost certainly not. Fish absorb calcium from the water at the gills, and if the hardness suits the species there is nothing to add. Supplementing changes the chemistry for every animal in the tank. In a reef tank the answer is different, because corals consume calcium and alkalinity continuously, and dosing there is routine and measured.
Can a bent spine be fixed?
No. Bone that has formed in a curve stays curved. What is worth doing is identifying the cause, because that determines whether the curve will progress, whether other fish are at risk, and whether there is anything to change. A stable, non-progressive curve in an otherwise healthy fish that eats and swims well is compatible with a normal life.
My fish is bent and getting thinner even though it eats. What is that?
That specific combination, a progressive curve with wasting despite a normal appetite, is the classic description of mycobacteriosis. It is chronic, generally untreatable in fish, and transmissible to people through broken skin. Wear gloves for all tank work, do not move fish or equipment to other tanks, avoid adding new fish, and get advice from a vet who sees aquatic species.
Do fish need UVB lighting for their bones like reptiles?
No. Fish get vitamin D from their diet, and there is no fish equivalent of the reptile lighting requirement. Aquarium lighting is for plants, for corals, and for you to see the fish. Adding a reptile lamp to a fish tank achieves nothing useful and adds heat.
How long does fish food actually last once opened?
Less time than the printed date suggests, because that date assumes the packet is sealed. Once opened, exposure to air, light, warmth and humidity begins degrading the vitamins, with vitamin C among the first to go. Buy the smallest container you will use in a few months, store it away from the warm humid air above the tank, and date the lid so you are not guessing.

When to get help

Contact an aquatic vet or an experienced specialist if a fish shows a progressive spinal curve with weight loss, skin ulcers that will not heal, a bulging eye, or scale loss, since that combination suggests chronic internal disease with implications for the whole system and for you.

Act immediately yourself, before seeking advice, if you suspect stray current: switch off and unplug all aquarium electrics at the wall before putting a hand in the water.

Seek advice on quality of life for a fish that can no longer swim upright or reach food. An aquatic vet can discuss whether anything is treatable and, if not, how to end things humanely, which is a conversation worth having before the fish is suffering.

See your own doctor for any persistent lump, nodule or ulcer on your hand or forearm after aquarium work, and tell them you keep fish.
