Quick answer

Fish do not chew houseplants, so a list of plants toxic to cats and dogs is not the right inventory for a fish keeper.

A true aquatic plant grows fully submerged indefinitely. Most of the harm from plants in aquariums comes from plants that cannot.

The plant inventory that matters for an aquarium is different. It covers which plants can actually live underwater, which ones rot and foul the water, and which houseplants near the tank carry risks in the form of pesticide residue and fertiliser spikes.

Why plant choice affects water, not appetite

The link between plants and fish health runs almost entirely through water chemistry.

A thermometer and a test kit tell you more about whether a plant is helping or harming than looking at the plant does.

A healthy growing plant takes up ammonia and nitrate directly. That makes it an ally of the filter, and it is why heavily planted tanks often hold their water quality better than bare ones.

A dying plant does the exact opposite. Decomposition releases nitrogen back into the water as ammonia, and in a small tank a single collapsing plant can produce a reading high enough to harm fish.

This is why the most common plant problem in home aquariums is not toxicity at all. It is a terrestrial plant sold in a pot as an aquarium plant, which survives for a few weeks underwater and then rots.

The second route is chemical. Fertilisers, algaecides and plant treatments are added deliberately, and some contain copper, which is used precisely because it kills invertebrates and algae. Shrimp and snails are affected at exposures fish tolerate, so invertebrate deaths are often the first sign.

The third route is what arrives with the plant. Snails, snail eggs, planaria, hydra and parasite stages travel on plants from other tanks and ponds.

What a good aquarium planting looks like

Choose plants that suit your lighting and substrate before buying, and rinse everything thoroughly before it goes in.

Species that are genuinely aquatic and suited to your lighting level. Low-light species are more forgiving in a general community tank.

Planting that matches the fish. Diggers uproot rooted plants, so species attached to wood or rock suit those tanks better. Herbivorous fish will eat soft-leaved plants.

Rooted plants in a substrate that supports them, and attached plants tied or glued to hardscape rather than buried.

Leaves removed as soon as they yellow or soften, so decomposition never gets going.

Fertiliser used only if the plants actually need it, dosed conservatively, and chosen with your invertebrates in mind.

Houseplants used above the water line only. Pothos and similar species grown with roots trailing in the tank and leaves in the air are a common and useful setup, because the roots take up nitrate while the leaves stay in air where they belong.

Changes that mean act today

Fish gasping or lethargic shortly after a plant treatment or fertiliser dose.

Do a large water change with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and increase aeration. Then test.

Invertebrates dying while fish appear unaffected.

What never to do

Do not put cut houseplant stems or leaves into the tank as decoration. Terrestrial leaf tissue breaks down quickly and fouls the water.

Do not use garden or houseplant fertiliser in an aquarium. The nutrient balance is wrong and the additives are not designed for fish.

Do not spray anything near an open tank, including household cleaners and plant sprays. Aerosols reach the surface easily.

Do not add plants from a wild pond or stream without quarantine. They carry parasites, pest snails and sometimes predatory insect larvae.

Do not assume a browning plant will recover. Remove the dying material and let the healthy part regrow.

Are any aquarium plants poisonous to fish?
Genuine aquatic plants sold for aquariums are not toxic to fish. The harm comes from decay, from chemicals used on the plants, and from terrestrial species that cannot survive submerged.
Can I grow pothos or a peace lily on my tank?
Roots in the water with the leaves in air is a well-established method and helps reduce nitrate. Keep the leaves out of the water and make sure the plant has not been treated with pesticide.
Why did my shrimp die after I started dosing plant fertiliser?
Copper is the usual explanation. Many fertilisers contain it at levels fish tolerate and invertebrates do not. Check the product and do water changes.
Do plants make the tank safer or riskier at night?
Plants consume oxygen in darkness, so a heavily planted tank dips lowest just before the lights come on. Good surface movement covers this.

When to get help

Contact an aquatic vet or an experienced aquarist if:

  • Fish become ill shortly after a fertiliser, algaecide or plant treatment
  • Ammonia rises and you cannot find the source
  • Invertebrates die repeatedly in a tank where fish are fine

Bring the water test numbers, the product names and doses used, and a list of what was added to the tank and when.

The addition list is usually what identifies the cause, because plant problems almost always trace back to something that went in recently.
