Overfeeding is the most common mistake in fishkeeping and it damages fish twice: once through the food itself, and again through the water quality collapse that follows. Fish beg constantly because foraging is what they do, not because they are hungry. Here is how to judge a portion, feed bottom dwellers properly, and read the tank for the signs you are giving too much.

Uneaten food rots. Rotting food releases ammonia into exactly the same water the fish breathe, feeds algae, clogs the substrate and overloads the filter. Most tanks with persistent water quality problems are being fed too much, and the owner almost never suspects it, because the fish always look hungry.
- Fish beg constantly. Begging is foraging behaviour, not a hunger signal, and a fish will keep eating well past what it needs.
- A useful working portion is the amount your fish finish in a couple of minutes with nothing reaching the substrate, given once or twice a day for most adult community fish.
- Bottom dwellers are the fish most often starved in an overfed tank, because leftovers from the surface are not a diet.

Why fish always look hungry
Foraging is a full-time occupation, not a response to an empty stomach.
In the wild a fish spends most of its waking hours searching for small amounts of food that arrive unpredictably. That behaviour does not switch off because a meal was delivered an hour ago. A fish rushing to the front glass when you walk past is doing exactly what it evolved to do.
Owners read that as hunger, feed again, and the cycle establishes itself. The fish are not lying to you; you are simply reading a foraging pattern as a request.
There is no satiety signal you can see.
Many aquarium fish will keep eating as long as food is present, because in their natural setting a glut is temporary and worth exploiting. That works when the glut lasts thirty seconds. It does not work when a person keeps shaking the tub.
Everyone in the house feeds them.
This is a genuinely common cause of a tank crash. Three people each giving one small feed produces triple the intended ration, and nobody is doing anything wrong from their own point of view. Agree who feeds, and say so out loud.
What too much food does
To the water.
Uneaten food decays and releases ammonia. So does the extra waste produced by fish that ate more than they needed. In a healthy cycled tank the filter converts that ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate, but a filter colony sized for a modest load takes days to grow into a larger one. In the meantime the readings climb.
Nitrate and phosphate accumulate and feed algae. Organic material coats the substrate and settles into dead spots behind decor, where it consumes oxygen as it breaks down and creates pockets of foul, low-oxygen sediment.
Bacterial blooms turn the water cloudy. Surface films block gas exchange at exactly the point where the tank takes up oxygen.
To the fish.
Obesity in ornamental fish is real and is mostly invisible from the side. Fat is deposited internally and in the liver, and fatty liver disease is a recognised cause of poor condition and shortened life in overfed aquarium and pond fish. There is no dramatic moment; the fish simply does less well for less obvious reasons.
Digestive overload causes bloating, constipation and, in deep-bodied fish, pressure on the swim bladder that produces the buoyancy problems owners often call swim bladder disease. Fancy goldfish, bettas and other selectively bred body shapes are especially prone, because their internal organs are already packed into a compressed body cavity.
Dry food that is swallowed dry continues to absorb water and expand in the gut. Fish that feed at the surface also swallow air while snatching floating pellets, which compounds the buoyancy problem.
Reduced water quality then damages gills, slime coat and immune function, so the fish is less able to cope with everything else.
How to judge a portion
The two minute rule.
Give an amount your fish finish within about two minutes, with nothing reaching the substrate in a tank that has no bottom dwellers. If food is still drifting down after that, you gave too much. This is a starting point rather than a law, and it works well for most community fish.
The eye guide.
A rough hobby guide worth knowing is that many fish have a stomach about the size of their own eye. Looking at your fish and picturing that volume is a sobering exercise the first time, and it recalibrates most people immediately.
Feed small, and feed twice rather than once if you prefer.
Two tiny feeds are gentler on the gut and on the filter than one large one. What matters is the daily total, not the number of events.
Watch the body, not the begging.
Look at each fish from above as well as from the side. You want a smooth, even outline with visible musculature along the back and no pinched appearance behind the head, and a belly that rounds after a meal and flattens again before the next one. A belly that never goes down is the sign to cut back.
Adjust for temperature and life stage.
Cooler water means slower metabolism and less food. Growing juveniles and fry need more frequent small feeds than adults. Coldwater and pond fish in winter need very little and eventually nothing at all, because they cannot digest it.
Adjust for the species.
Some fish are grazers that need something available for much of the day, some are ambush predators that eat substantially and infrequently, and some are specialist feeders. Ask a knowledgeable aquatic vet or retailer about the specific species you keep rather than treating one schedule as universal.
What a well fed fish looks like
Active and alert, using the whole tank, with a normal interest in food that does not look frantic.
Colour full and even for the species.
Body outline smooth from above, with muscle along the back and no hollow behind the head and no sunken belly.
Belly that changes shape across the day: rounder after a meal, flatter before the next one.
Droppings that are firm, coloured like the food, and passed normally. Long, clear, stringy or bubbly droppings suggest a digestive problem or a poorly tolerated food.
Water that stays clear between changes, with nitrate rising only slowly and no film on the surface.
The routine that keeps portions honest
What never to do
Do not feed again because the fish look hungry. They will always look hungry.
Do not feed a tank with a detectable ammonia or nitrite reading until the water is back under control.
Do not load the tank with food before going away. Adult fish in a mature tank cope with a short absence far better than they cope with a fouled tank. Use an automatic feeder set to small portions, or ask someone to feed pre-measured amounts, rather than leaving a large ration behind.
Do not rely on holiday feeder blocks in a small tank. Many dissolve into the water and add far more than the fish take out.
Do not assume that food which disappears was eaten. Much of it is sitting in the gravel.
Do not feed bread, biscuit, or human leftovers.
Do not use food to compensate for a tank that is too bare. A hungry-looking fish in an empty tank often needs enrichment and cover, not more calories.
Do not fast fry, very small-bodied species, or fish that graze continuously. Fasting is a tool for adult fish with reserves, and even then it should suit the species you keep.
Do not treat a bloated fish by feeding it something else. Stop feeding, test the water, and get advice.

When to get help
Contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian the same day for a fish that is bloated and cannot control its position in the water, that is lying on its side, that has stopped passing waste, or that has a swollen abdomen with raised scales.
Seek advice within the week for a fish that is progressively losing condition despite eating, for persistent long stringy droppings, or for bottom dwellers that stay thin after you have started feeding them directly.
Seek advice promptly for any tank where ammonia or nitrite will not stay at zero, since diet, stocking and filtration all have to be looked at together.
Bring your water test log, the tank volume, the full stocking list, exactly what you feed and how much and how often, who else in the household feeds, and a photograph of the fish from above as well as from the side. Feeding problems are usually solved on paper before anyone examines a fish.
