Why a new tank must cycle first
Fish continuously excrete ammonia, and any uneaten food breaks down into more of it. Ammonia is toxic, and in a new tank there is nothing to remove it, so it simply climbs until it harms or kills the fish. This is the core of what is often called new tank syndrome.
