Fin rot or fin nipping: how to tell

This is the single most useful distinction to make, because the two problems have opposite solutions. Nipping is fixed in the stocking list. Rot is fixed in the water.

The shape of the damage.

A bite is a bite. Nipping leaves clean-edged notches, often semicircular, sometimes taking a neat triangle out of a trailing edge. Fin rot produces a ragged, frayed, uneven margin that looks eaten away rather than cut.

The colour of the margin.

This is the most reliable single sign. A nipped edge is the same colour as the rest of the fin. An infected edge is discoloured: white, milky, opaque, grey, or with a red or black rim. Some species deposit dark pigment along a healing edge, which is not the same as the inflamed red line of active infection.

The direction of travel.

Watch the same fish for two days. Nipping damage stays where it is unless the fish is bitten again. Fin rot advances toward the body, and by the time it reaches the fin rays and the base it is a much more serious problem.

How many fish are involved.

One fish with damage and several healthy tank mates suggests bullying or an injury. Several fish with ragged fins at the same time almost always means the water is the problem.

What the fish is doing.

Watch at feeding time and again after lights out. Chasing, flaring, guarding a spot, and torn edges appearing overnight point at a tank mate. A fish that is clamping its fins, sitting near the bottom, breathing rapidly, or off its food is telling you it is unwell rather than harassed.

The two overlap constantly. A nipped fin is an open wound in water full of opportunistic bacteria, so nipping today is a common cause of fin rot next week. Finding a culprit does not mean you can ignore the fin.

Why the water is nearly always the cause

The bacteria that cause fin rot are present in every healthy aquarium. Healthy fin tissue and an intact mucus layer keep them out.

Ammonia and nitrite break that defence. Both irritate and damage the gill and skin surface directly, and both suppress the immune response. A fish that is spending its reserves coping with poor water has less left to defend a small tear in a fin.

Chronic stress works the same way through a different route. Constant harassment, no cover, wrong temperature, wrong water chemistry for the species, or a tank too small for the fish all produce a persistently stressed animal, and stress hormones suppress immunity in fish exactly as they do in mammals.

Old, organically loaded water raises the bacterial load at the same time. A tank with heavy waste build-up in the substrate and filter is offering more organisms to a fish that is defending itself less well.

That combination explains the pattern owners see. Fin rot in a new tank that was never cycled, fin rot after a filter was cleaned in tap water, fin rot after a heater failed, and fin rot in the overstocked tank that has always looked slightly cloudy.

The look-alikes worth separating

Columnaris.

A bacterial infection that produces grey-white patches, often as a saddle across the back or as a fuzzy grey lesion at the mouth. It can move very fast. Unlike most fish infections, it becomes more aggressive as the temperature rises, so the widely repeated advice to turn the heater up is the wrong response and can accelerate losses. This is a reason to identify the problem rather than treat generically.

Fungal infection.

True fungus, usually Saprolegnia, appears as a white or grey cottony tuft with visible depth. It colonises dead or dying tissue, so it is almost always growing on top of an existing wound or an existing bacterial infection. Treating only the fluff leaves the real problem in place.

Fin damage from decor and equipment.

Plastic plants with hard edges, sharp rock, an unguarded filter intake, or a net catching a long-finned fish all tear fins. The damage is sudden, mechanical, and often matches something in the tank.

Ammonia burn.

Reddened, inflamed fin edges and gills in a fish from a tank with measurable ammonia. This is chemical injury rather than infection, although infection frequently follows.

Normal fin regrowth.

New fin membrane grows in clear and thin, and it can look pale or oddly shaped. It is smooth and advancing outward, not ragged and retreating inward. Regrown areas often stay a different colour permanently.

What to do, in order

One. Test before you treat.

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature, and pH. Use a liquid test kit rather than strips if you have the choice. Write the numbers down, because the vet or the shop will ask and because the trend matters more than a single reading.

Two. Correct the water.

If ammonia or nitrite are detectable at all, that is your diagnosis until proven otherwise. Carry out water changes with dechlorinated water matched for temperature, and repeat them rather than doing one large change. Do not clean the filter media in tap water, and do not replace all the media at once.

Three. Remove the cause of the injury.

Take out sharp decor, guard the filter intake, and deal with the aggression. That may mean adding dense planting and sight breaks, rehoming a fin nipper, or accepting that a long-finned fish and a boisterous species are not compatible.

Four. Keep feeding sensibly.

Uneaten food is a direct source of ammonia. Feed a smaller amount that is fully eaten, and siphon leftovers out.

Five. Decide about medication with advice, not by browsing the shelf.

If the infection is progressing despite corrected water, this is the point to contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian. Many countries require a prescription for genuine antibacterials for exactly this reason, and blind dosing produces resistant organisms, dead filter bacteria, and a fish that has been medicated for the wrong thing.

Six. Use a hospital tank if you medicate.

A separate, heated, aerated container with its own water changes protects the display tank's filter and lets you dose accurately for a known volume.

Seven. Watch the margin, not the length.

Recovery does not mean the fin gets longer immediately. It means the eroded edge stops being white or ragged and becomes clear, thin and smooth. That change usually comes first.

What never to do

Do not raise the temperature as a general treatment. It speeds up columnaris, it lowers dissolved oxygen, and it increases the metabolic demand on an already compromised fish.

Do not trim or cut damaged fin tissue. It is painful, it creates a fresh wound, and there is no benefit.

Do not combine several medications, or follow one treatment immediately with another. Interactions between aquarium treatments are poorly documented and the fish absorbs everything through its gills.

Do not dose the whole tank to treat one fish unless a vet has advised it.

Do not rely on botanical or tea-tree based remedies as a substitute for correcting the water. They are marketed as antibacterial but they are not antibiotics, and time spent on them is time the infection uses.

Do not add a new fish to a tank that is currently having a fin rot outbreak.

Do not put your hands in the tank if you have an open cut. Some aquarium bacteria, including Mycobacterium species, can infect people through broken skin and cause a stubborn localised infection. Use gloves or wait until the cut has healed.

Will the fin grow back?
Fin membrane regenerates well if the fin rays are intact. Where erosion has destroyed the rays back to the body, the fin often stays short or misshapen permanently. That is the reason to act at the first ragged edge rather than waiting to see how far it goes.
My betta's fins are splitting but the edges look normal. Is that fin rot?
Splits along the ray lines with clean, normally coloured edges are usually mechanical damage from decor, netting, or the fish catching itself, and long-finned bettas do it easily. Watch the edges. Clean splits that hold still are damage. Ragged white margins that advance are infection.
Should I quarantine the affected fish?
It depends on the cause. If the fish is being bullied, separating it is helpful. If the water is the problem, moving one fish leaves the rest in the conditions that caused it. The exception is aggressive, fast-moving disease such as suspected columnaris, where isolating affected fish quickly is worthwhile.
How long does recovery take?
Longer than owners expect, and it depends on temperature, species and how much tissue was lost. What you should see within a few days of correcting the water is the damage stopping. Visible regrowth comes later. If the edge is still advancing after several days of clean water, the fish needs veterinary attention.

When to get help

Contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian the same day for ulcers or reddened patches on the body, red streaking at the base of the fins, lifted scales with a swollen abdomen, rapid grey lesions suggesting columnaris, or several fish deteriorating together.

Contact one within a few days if the eroded edge is still advancing after the water has been corrected, or if the fish stops eating.

Bring the full set of water test numbers with dates, the tank volume and how long it has been running, the complete stocking list, the maintenance and feeding routine, anything added or changed recently, and dated photographs of the affected fins.

Most aquatic vets will look at the water history before the fish, because fin rot is usually the tank reporting a problem through the animal least able to tolerate it.
