Why cold does what it does

Every biochemical process in a fish runs at a rate set by temperature. Drop the temperature and enzyme activity, digestion, and immune response all slow together.

That slowdown is the real danger, not the cold itself. A tropical fish held below its range is not simply uncomfortable. Its ability to fight off parasites and bacteria falls away, while the organisms already present in the tank carry on.

Digestion is affected in the same way. Food in the gut of a chilled fish moves slowly and can rot in place, which is why feeding is stopped during a cold event rather than increased.

The rate of change adds a second problem. A sudden drop triggers a stress response, and stress in fish suppresses immunity further and damages the protective slime coat.

Which is why the two most common outcomes of a chilling event are a white spot outbreak and a bacterial infection appearing several days later, in a fish that seemed to have recovered.

How it usually happens

Heater failure.

A heater that fails in the off position gives no signal at all. The tank cools over hours and the first sign is behavioural.

Undersized heating for the room.

A heater matched to the tank but not to a cold room, an unheated conservatory, or a winter power-saving thermostat setting will lose the battle at night.

Power cuts.

Heating, filtration, and aeration stop together. The temperature loss is usually slower than owners fear, but oxygen and filter bacteria become concerns as well.

Cold water changes.

Adding a large volume of cold tap water changes the temperature faster than anything else on this list.

Transport.

A bag or container carried home in winter, or left in a cold car, can drop below the species range in a short time.

Draughts and air conditioning.

A tank beside a window or under an air conditioning outlet loses heat continuously, and the effect is easy to miss because it is gradual.

What to do, in order

1. Confirm the temperature.

Read the thermometer rather than judging by hand. If you do not have a reliable one, that is the first thing to buy.

2. Restore heat gradually.

Repair or replace the heater and let the tank come back up at its own pace. If the power is out, insulate the tank with blankets or towels, keep the lid closed, and keep the lights off.

3. Protect oxygen.

If the filter and air pump are off, create gentle surface movement periodically, for example by pouring tank water back into the tank from a small height. A battery air pump is worth owning for this.

4. Stop feeding.

Do not feed until the temperature is back in range and the fish are moving normally. Uneaten food in a cold tank fouls the water quickly.

5. Do not medicate reflexively.

Treatments dosed into a cold tank behave differently and add stress. Stabilise the temperature first.

6. Watch closely for several days afterwards.

Look for white spots, cotton-like patches, red streaks, clamped fins, and any change in breathing.

How long can fish survive a power cut?
It depends on the tank volume, the room temperature, the species, and the stocking level. A large, well-insulated tank in a heated house loses heat slowly. The practical answer is to insulate immediately, protect oxygen, stop feeding, and monitor rather than to rely on any fixed figure.
Why did my fish get white spot after a cold snap?
White spot is often present at low levels in an established tank and is held in check by the fish's immune system. Chilling suppresses that response, which allows the parasite to establish. This is why an outbreak so often follows a temperature problem.
Is a cold tank ever safer than a warm one?
Not for tropical species. Coldwater fish and pond fish are adapted to seasonal cooling and slow down naturally, which is normal for them. Tropical species held below their range simply decline.
My tank cooled overnight and the fish look fine. Do I need to do anything?
Restore the correct temperature gradually, hold off feeding until it is back in range, and watch closely over the following days. Most of the damage from a chilling event shows up after the fish appear to have recovered.

When to get help

Contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian the same day for a fish that is on its side, gasping at the surface, unresponsive, or bleeding.

Seek advice within a few days for white spots, cotton-like growths, red streaks in the fins, ragged fin edges, or a fish that has not resumed eating once the temperature is correct.

Bring the temperature history, including how low it went and for how long, your water test numbers, the tank volume, the stocking list, and what you did to restore the temperature.

Cold exposure is one of the few aquarium emergencies where the cause is usually obvious. The value of the record is in showing how far the fish dropped and how fast it came back, which is what predicts what happens next.
