Why an aquarium makes noise
Three separate mechanisms produce almost every complaint.
Vibration.
A pump or air pump is a small motor with a moving part. Standing on a glass shelf, a hollow cabinet, or a laminate floor, it turns that furniture into a sounding board. The motor may be quiet in your hand and loud on the stand.
Water falling through air.
Any point where water drops rather than flows makes a splashing sound. A return outlet above the surface, an overflow weir, or a hang-on-back filter with a low water level all do this. Evaporation slowly lowers the level, which is why the noise creeps in over weeks.
Air moving through small openings.
Air pumps, airstones, and venturi attachments all push air through a narrow gap. That is inherently buzzy, and the noise carries through walls better than the low hum of a water pump.
Vibration also matters for the animals. Fish detect pressure waves through the lateral line and inner ear, and a tank sitting on a vibrating surface gives them no quiet zone. Persistent vibration is a recognised stressor, alongside sudden knocks on the glass.
What a well set-up tank sounds like
Stand in the doorway of the room with the door closed behind you and listen for a minute.
A correctly set up freshwater tank produces a soft, continuous flow sound and very little else. You should be able to hear it in the room and not from the next room.
There should be no rattle, no periodic clicking, and no pitch that rises and falls.
Put a hand flat on the cabinet top. You should feel almost nothing. Clear buzzing under your palm means the vibration path, not the motor, is the problem.
Check the water level at the same time. In most set-ups the return outlet should be at or just under the surface, close enough that water flows rather than falls.
Changes that mean act today
A new grinding or knocking sound.
Debris, gravel, or a snail shell in the impeller housing causes this. Left running, it wears the shaft and shortens the pump's life.
Flow that has dropped as the noise rose.
Reduced circulation means reduced gas exchange and reduced biological filtration. Treat this as a water-quality issue, not just a noise issue.
A pump that is hot to the touch and not moving water.
Shut it off at the socket. Restore oxygen immediately with a spare air pump or by increasing surface agitation another way, and replace the unit.
The routine that keeps it quiet
A quiet tank is usually a well-maintained tank. Almost every noise complaint traces back to a service task that is overdue.
What never to do
Do not put the tank against a shared bedroom wall if you can avoid it. Low-frequency vibration passes through structure far better than it passes through air.
Do not run equipment on a timer to give the neighbours a break. Circulation and aeration are continuous requirements.
Do not lubricate a pump with household oil. Anything that reaches the water is a contaminant, and aquarium pumps are water-lubricated by design.
Do not stack books, tools, or spare glass on the cabinet top. Loose objects buzz in sympathy with the pump and are often the real source.

When to get help
Aquarium noise is rarely a veterinary matter, but the underlying equipment fault can become one.
Contact an aquatics shop or equipment supplier the same day if a pump is hot, grinding, or has stopped moving water, since the tank is then running without proper filtration.
Contact an aquatic or exotics veterinarian if the fish are gasping at the surface, clamping their fins, or hiding after a period of reduced circulation. Those signs point to oxygen or ammonia problems rather than noise.
Have these ready: the tank volume, the make and model of the pump and filter, how long the equipment has run, the date of the last filter service, and your latest ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings.
