Fish and visitors: tapping, guest feeding and party nights
Fish do not greet, they have learned that a shape at the glass predicts food. This explains the conditioning behind the rush, the differentials that look identical to it including gasping and flaring at reflections, and the three things visitors reliably do to an aquarium: overfeed it, tap it and unplug it.

Quick answer
A fish coming to the front is a learned feeding response, not a greeting. Note the open rim: a startled fish leaves through a gap like that.
Fish do not greet. When your tank rushes the front glass as someone walks up, the fish have learned that a large shape at that distance is followed by food. It is real learning and it is a good sign, but it means every visitor who approaches is being asked for a meal, and every visitor who obliges is adding to a load your filter has to absorb.
The risk in a house full of guests is not that the fish are lonely or overexcited. It is overfeeding, tapping, aerosols, an unplugged socket and an open lid, roughly in that order.
- Feed the tank yourself before people arrive, then say plainly that it has been fed. A fed tank still begs.
- Never let anyone tap the glass. Water carries a tap into the fish far more efficiently than air carries it to you.
- Keep the lid closed and every cable gap blocked. A startled fish jumps, and a busy evening is when it happens.
- Move aerosols, diffusers and scented candles out of the room. The water surface absorbs whatever is in the air.
- Label the aquarium's socket. Someone will look for somewhere to charge a phone.

Two silent killers in a room full of people: an unplugged filter or heater, and something aerosolised into the air above an open tank.
An extension lead behind the tank is the obvious free socket in any room. A filter switched off for an evening loses oxygen supply and starts losing its bacterial colony; a heater switched off overnight in a cold room can drop a tropical tank far enough to kill. Label the plugs, or fit a cover, before guests arrive.
Hairspray, deodorant, air freshener, insect spray, oven cleaner and smoke all reach the water surface and dissolve. A tank has no way to remove them. Nothing is sprayed in a room with an aquarium, and the tank is covered and the filter briefly stopped if anyone is going to use anything aerosolised nearby.

Why fish rush the glass
The mechanism is straightforward conditioning. Food arrives from above and slightly in front, preceded by a shadow and a large moving shape. After enough repetitions the shape alone triggers the searching and surface-orientation behaviour, exactly as a can opener does in a cat's kitchen.
Two things make it look more social than it is.
Fish do not have a satiety brake that stops the behaviour. In most aquarium species, hunting effort continues past the point of nutritional need. In the wild that is adaptive, because food is unpredictable. In a glass box with an attentive audience it means the fish will keep asking regardless of what it has already eaten, and will keep eating whatever arrives.
Some fish genuinely can tell people apart. Several species have been shown to discriminate between individual humans, and larger, longer-lived fish such as cichlids, oscars and koi frequently behave differently toward the person who feeds them. So the response is not pure reflex. It is still, in almost all cases, about food rather than about company.
The practical consequence is the whole point of this article: a fish that comes to the front is not telling you it is hungry. It is telling you it has learned a rule.
Reading the rush: what else it can be
Approaching the glass is one of a small set of behaviours that all look similar to a casual observer and mean completely different things.

The flaring one is worth expanding because it appears exactly when visitors do. When the room lights come on and the world outside the glass gets darker, the aquarium glass becomes a mirror. A betta or a territorial cichlid then spends the evening displaying at its own reflection, which is metabolically expensive and genuinely stressful.
If a fish flares only in the evening and only at one panel, the answer is lighting and a background, not a tank mate problem.
What healthy interest looks like

Upright, fins carried open, moving through midwater with steady gill movement. This is an alert fish, not a distressed one.
An engaged, healthy fish comes forward, holds position in midwater, and carries its fins open rather than clamped against the body. Colour is full. Gill covers move steadily and evenly rather than rapidly. When nobody feeds it, it goes back to what it was doing within a minute or two.
Note the difference between alert and frantic. A fish that hangs at the front for an hour, or repeats the same path along the glass, is not more enthusiastic. It is doing something else.
Resting is also normal and often mistaken for illness. Bettas, loaches and many bottom-dwelling species lie on the substrate or on a leaf to rest, sometimes at an odd angle.

A resting betta lies on the substrate and rises normally when it chooses to. A lethargic one stays down, with clamped fins, and does not respond when food arrives.
The separator is responsiveness. A resting fish rises when it wants to and looks normal when it does. A lethargic one stays down, holds its fins clamped, ignores food, and often sits in flow or at the surface instead.
The three things visitors actually do
They feed the fish.
This is the big one, and it is almost never one large feed. It is four people each giving a small pinch across an evening, none of them knowing about the others, on top of the meal you already gave.
The mechanism that makes it dangerous is not the fish overeating, although goldfish and cichlids will genuinely eat themselves into trouble. It is what happens to the food that is not eaten. Uneaten flake and pellets decay and release ammonia. Ammonia is converted by one group of filter bacteria into nitrite, and nitrite by a second group into much less harmful nitrate.
Those bacterial populations are sized to your normal feeding. They cannot double overnight. So a sudden increase in food produces an ammonia spike within a day, followed by a nitrite spike a few days later as the first group catches up and the second lags behind. Nitrite is the one that kills quietly, because it binds the blood pigment so the fish cannot carry oxygen even in well aerated water.
The fish often look fine on the night and die later in the week. Owners then look for a disease.
They tap the glass.
Sound travels several times faster in water than in air, and loses far less energy as it goes. A fish tank is also a rigid box: a knuckle on one panel puts a pressure wave through the entire volume.
Fish detect this two ways. The lateral line, a row of pressure-sensitive organs along the flank, reads water movement directly. On top of that, tetras, barbs, danios, corydoras and loaches have a chain of small bones connecting the swim bladder to the inner ear, which makes them far more acute hearers than most people assume. For those species a tap is not a mild annoyance.
Repeated tapping produces the classic pattern: fish that bolt into cover, stop coming out, stop eating well and become more susceptible to disease. Children tap because the fish react, which is a feedback loop worth interrupting early.
They interfere with the equipment.
An extension lead behind an aquarium is the most inviting free socket in any living room. Filters get switched off for a phone charger. Lights get turned on at three in the morning by someone looking for the bathroom switch. Lids get lifted so someone can look properly. Things get dropped in.
None of this is malicious and all of it is predictable.
Guest-proofing, in ten minutes

Caves, planting and a solid background give shy species somewhere to be when the room is full. Cover reduces stress more reliably than quiet does.
The single most effective thing is to say it once, at the door, in a friendly way: the fish have been fed, please do not tap or feed them. A note taped near the tank works better than repeating yourself all evening.
What changes by species and setup
Small tanks. A nano tank has less water to dilute an ammonia spike and less dissolved oxygen in absolute terms. The same overfeeding event that a large tank shrugs off can be fatal in a small one. Unfiltered bowls have no bacterial capacity at all.
Bettas. They flare at reflections, they jump readily, and they breathe air at the surface using a labyrinth organ, so they need access to the surface and reasonably warm air above the water. Do not seal the tank in a cold room and do not let anyone push them into displaying for entertainment. A flaring betta is not performing, it is fighting.
Goldfish, koi and large cichlids. Heavy feeders with a heavy waste output and no restraint. They are also the fish visitors most want to feed, because they respond so obviously.
Shy species. Loaches, plecos, corydoras, many catfish and most newly added fish. A room full of people is a genuine stressor for these, and the answer is cover: caves, planting, a solid background, and a spot where they can be out of the traffic sightline.
Ponds. Guests bring bread. Bread is poorly digested, swells, and fouls the water, and pond volumes are large but pond filters are usually running near capacity in warm weather when oxygen is already low. Ponds also collect thrown objects and, at gatherings, cigarette ends.
Marine and reef tanks. More sensitive to airborne contamination and to anything metal entering the water, and guests are more likely to want to put a hand in. Nobody puts a hand in a reef tank.
The 72 hours after
If you think the tank was overfed, the work is not on the night. It is the following three days.
Remove what you can see. Siphon uneaten food off the substrate rather than letting the filter deal with it.
Do not feed the next day, and feed lightly for several days after that. A healthy adult fish is in no difficulty from missing a day.
Test ammonia and nitrite daily. Expect ammonia to move first and nitrite to follow. Do partial water changes with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water when either is detectable, and keep aeration high, because warm water and a high bioload both reduce dissolved oxygen at the moment the fish need it most.
Watch the fish for gasping at the surface, clamped fins, sitting on the bottom, and reddened gills. Those are the signs of the delayed problem rather than of the party.
What never to do
Do not tap the glass, and do not let anyone else, including to show a child that the fish will react.
Do not feed to make up for a fish that looks hungry. Every fish in a community tank looks hungry all of the time.
Do not let a guest hold or handle a fish. Handling strips the protective mucus layer that is the fish's first defence against bacteria and parasites, and out of water a fish's gills collapse together and stop working within a very short time.
Do not spray anything in the room, including cleaning the outside of the glass with a household spray. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth.
Do not use the aquarium lead for anything else, and do not leave it as the only accessible socket.
Do not run the aquarium light late so guests can see the fish. Photoperiod stability matters and a tank lit at midnight also grows algae.
Do not add "a bit of salt", stress coat products or medications because the fish seemed stressed after a party. Test first. Almost every post-party problem is water chemistry, and treating a chemistry problem with medication delays the water change that would have fixed it.

When to get help
Test the water first for almost everything on this list. In aquarium fish, most acute problems after a disturbance are water chemistry rather than infection, and a test result changes the answer completely.
Act immediately for fish gasping at the surface, hanging at the filter outflow with rapid gill movement, reddened or pale gills, or several fish behaving abnormally at once. Increase aeration, do a partial water change with dechlorinated matched-temperature water, and test ammonia and nitrite.
Seek advice from an aquatic veterinarian or an experienced aquatic specialist if fish are dying over consecutive days despite corrected water parameters, if fish show ulcers, cottony growths, white spots or bleeding fins, or if a whole tank goes off food for more than a couple of days.
If something was sprayed or spilled into the room and the fish are affected, treat it as a chemical exposure: large water change, fresh carbon, maximum aeration, and advice sought the same day.
