Dogs in humid heat: why panting stops working, and what actually cools a dog
A dog cools itself almost entirely by evaporating water from its airway, which is why the same temperature is survivable in dry air and lethal in humid air. In dry heat, a panting dog is a working cooling system. In humid heat, the same dog is moving air that cannot absorb any more water, and the system fails while the dog looks like it is trying hard.
- Dogs have functional sweat glands only in the paw pads. Skin sweating is not part of the picture.
- When the air is already saturated, panting stops removing heat, and no amount of panting compensates.
- When air temperature is above the dog's body temperature, the environment is heating the dog through every other route as well.
- Cooling works by wetting the dog and moving air across it. A fan alone on a dry dog does relatively little.
- Heat illness is not over when the dog looks better. Kidney injury, clotting failure and gut damage can declare themselves over the following one to three days.

How a dog actually loses heat
Heat leaves a body by four routes: evaporation, convection, conduction and radiation. In a dog, the balance between them is unusual, and understanding it makes every practical decision obvious.
Evaporation is the main route, and in a dog it happens almost entirely in the respiratory tract. Air is drawn in through the nose over the moist, highly vascular turbinates, and out through the mouth. Water evaporating from those surfaces takes a large amount of heat with it.
Paw pads have sweat glands, but the surface area is trivial. There is no whole-body sweating, so the human intuition that a hot animal will sweat and cool down does not apply.
Convection is heat carried away by moving air. It only works if the air is cooler than the dog.
Conduction is heat moving into a cooler object in contact with the dog. This is why dogs lie on tiles and dig down to cool soil, and it is the whole mechanism behind a cooling mat.
Radiation is heat emitted from the skin, and it works best from the sparsely furred areas: the belly, the groin, the armpits and the inside of the ears.
The order of that list is the order of the plan. Wetting the dog and moving air over it attacks the biggest route directly. A tiled floor and a cool room attack the next two. Shade removes the radiant load coming in from the sun.
Once the air is hotter than the dog, convection and radiation reverse direction and start delivering heat to the animal, leaving evaporation carrying the entire load on its own.
Why humidity is the number that matters
Evaporation depends on a gradient. Water leaves a wet surface only if the air can accept more water vapour than it currently holds. As relative humidity climbs, that gradient shrinks, and at very high humidity it approaches nothing.
This is why a dry day at a high temperature can be manageable while a lower temperature in saturated tropical air is lethal, and it is the single most important adjustment to make when reading heat advice written for temperate countries.
There is a field test that follows directly from the physics and does not require a device. Wet the back of your hand and hold it in the shade where the dog will be. If it feels distinctly cool as it dries, evaporation is working and so is the dog's panting. If it feels warm and stays wet, the dog's cooling system is not working either, and the plan for that day has to be conduction and air conditioning rather than water bowls and shade.
Some vets use a rough rule that adds air temperature to relative humidity as a warning prompt. Treat any such rule as a reason to check the dog rather than as a threshold that guarantees safety, because it says nothing about the individual animal in front of you.
The practical consequence for a humid climate is that air conditioning is not a luxury. It is the only common household technology that removes water from the air as well as heat, and dehumidification is a large part of why an air-conditioned room helps a dog so much more than a fan does.
The dogs that cannot cope
Flat-faced breeds.
French bulldogs, English bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, boxers, shih tzus and Pekingese have the soft tissue of a normal-length muzzle compressed into a short skull. Narrowed nostrils, an elongated soft palate and a narrow windpipe mean the air they need for panting has to be dragged through a restricted airway.
Two things follow. The cooling surface in the nose is reduced, so each breath removes less heat. And the effort of breathing through the obstruction generates heat and causes the airway tissues to swell, which narrows it further. That loop is why this group deteriorates so much faster than other dogs and why airway obstruction, not the temperature alone, is what kills them.
Laryngeal paralysis.
This is the most commonly missed cause of heat intolerance in older large dogs, particularly Labradors. The nerve supply to the larynx fails, so the airway does not open properly during the deep, fast breathing of panting.
The early signs are subtle and easy to attribute to age: a change in the sound of the bark, noisy breathing on exertion, a harsh inspiratory sound, and a dog that struggles in warm weather when it used to be fine. Any of those in an older large dog is worth an appointment, because a dog with an unrecognised laryngeal paralysis can arrive at a heat crisis on an ordinary day.
Obesity.
Fat is an insulating layer and it increases the metabolic work of movement. Obese dogs are consistently over-represented in heat-related illness, and weight loss is the single most effective intervention available to an owner in a hot climate.
Thick double coats.
Huskies, malamutes, Samoyeds, chow chows, Newfoundlands and German shepherds carry a dense undercoat evolved for cold. In a hot climate the coat itself is not the whole problem, because a clean, well-brushed double coat traps a layer of air that insulates against incoming heat as well as against cold. The problem is a matted or shed-clogged coat, which stops air moving at all, and the fact that these dogs also have the exercise drive of a working breed.
Size and age.
Giant breeds have a lower ratio of surface area to body mass and shed heat more slowly. Puppies and elderly dogs regulate less effectively. Dogs with heart disease, respiratory disease or a previous heat episode are more vulnerable again.
Coat colour and sun.
Dark coats absorb more radiant heat in direct sun. Thin-coated, white and pink-skinned dogs burn, and in a permanently sunny climate that is a chronic risk rather than a holiday one.
Coat management where it is hot all year

Deshedding, not clipping, is what a double-coated dog needs in the heat. The undercoat rake and the comb do more for the dog's temperature than the clippers would.
The instinct to shave a hot dog is strong and is usually wrong for a double coat.
A double-coated dog does not lose meaningful heat through its skin, so removing the coat does not open a cooling route. What it does remove is sun protection, exposing skin that has never been exposed, in a climate with a high year-round ultraviolet load. Regrowth after a shave-down can also come back patchy and woolly, which insulates worse than the original.
What genuinely helps is removing the dead undercoat, thoroughly and often. A clogged coat is a blanket. A clean one is a ventilated layer.
Continuously growing coats are a different case. Poodles and poodle crosses, bichons and shih tzus do not shed out, and in a hot humid climate their coats mat quickly, trap moisture against the skin and cause skin disease. These dogs benefit from a genuinely short, regular clip, and the interval matters more than the length.
Bathing and drying deserve attention in humid climates for a reason that has nothing to do with temperature: a coat that stays damp against the skin is where hot spots and yeast overgrowth begin. Dry the dog properly, especially in the armpits, groin and behind the ears.

In permanently humid air, ears are the part that pays. A warm, moist, poorly ventilated canal is an ideal environment for yeast and bacteria, and dogs with pendulous ears start at a disadvantage.
What permanent heat does over months
An article about a heatwave stops at the heatwave. Living somewhere hot means managing a set of slow problems as well as an acute one.
Ears. Warm humid air, floppy ears and frequent swimming combine to produce recurrent otitis. Check weekly, dry after swimming, and treat early rather than waiting for a head shake to become a painful ear.
Skin. Humid heat favours bacterial and yeast overgrowth in skin folds, between the toes and under the tail. Flat-faced and wrinkled breeds need their folds cleaned and dried as routine care, not as a treatment.
Paws. Paving, sand, metal and artificial turf reach temperatures that burn pads while the air still feels tolerable. In a permanently hot climate this becomes a year-round scheduling constraint rather than a summer rule, and it is the main reason walks migrate to first light and after dark.
Sun damage. Pink noses, white ear tips and thinly furred bellies accumulate ultraviolet damage over years, which can progress to solar dermatitis and skin cancers. Shade structures, avoiding the middle of the day, and a veterinary-approved sunscreen on the vulnerable spots are the practical answers.
Parasites and vector-borne disease. Warm climates mean no seasonal break for ticks, fleas and mosquitoes, so prevention is year-round. Which diseases matter depends entirely on where you are: heartworm, leishmaniasis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and others have very different geographic ranges. Ask a local vet what is endemic where you live rather than importing a protocol from another country.
Hydration and appetite. Dogs eat less and drink more in sustained heat. A dog that is drinking noticeably more in a hot climate is usually just hot, but the same sign belongs to kidney disease, diabetes and other conditions, so a persistent change deserves a check rather than an assumption.
The plan for an ordinary hot day

A short, regular clip suits a continuously growing coat in humid heat. The same clip on a double-coated breed removes sun protection without improving cooling.
Two of those deserve emphasis in a permanently hot climate. Refilling rather than topping up matters because standing water in the heat grows biofilm quickly and dogs drink less from a bowl that tastes stale. And the power-cut plan matters because in a household that depends on air conditioning, a failure of the electricity supply is a heat emergency, and it will not happen at a convenient hour.
Recognising heat illness, and the first ten minutes
Early. Heavy, fast panting that does not settle in shade. Thick, ropey saliva. Seeking cool surfaces, slowing down, lagging behind, bright red gums, restlessness.
Established. Refusal to move, wobbling, vomiting or diarrhoea which may contain blood, a dazed expression, very fast heart rate.
Late. Collapse, seizures, gums that are dark, brick-coloured, muddy or blue, bleeding from the nose or in the stool, and unconsciousness.
The first response is to cool the dog where it is, before travelling. Move it into shade or indoors, then douse it continuously with cool tap water and get air moving over it with a fan, an open car window or a folded towel used as a fan.
Current veterinary emergency guidance favours rapid, continuous cooling with cool water rather than the cautious tepid dabbing that used to be recommended. Speed matters more than precision about temperature. What is not helpful is packing a dog in ice, or laying a wet towel over it and leaving it there, because a towel warms to the dog's temperature and then insulates.
Keep cooling on the way to the clinic. If you can take a rectal temperature, do, and stop active cooling when it comes down, because cooling overshoots easily. Emergency guidance commonly sets that stopping point at about 39.4 degrees Celsius.
Ring ahead so the clinic is ready. Offer small amounts of water if the dog is conscious and swallowing, and never pour water into the mouth of a dog that is not.
Every dog that has had a genuine heat episode needs veterinary assessment even if it appears normal within the hour. The damage that kills is the delayed kind.
What never to do
Do not leave a dog in a parked car, a conservatory, a caravan or a balcony run, at any time of day, in any weather that is not cold.
Do not exercise a flat-faced dog in the heat at all. Their airway limits do not respond to fitness.
Do not shave a double-coated breed to cool it down.
Do not wrap a hot dog in a wet towel and leave it. Douse continuously instead.
Do not withhold water or ice out of a fear of bloat. There is no good evidence that cold water causes gastric dilatation, and dehydration is a real and present problem.
Do not use a muzzle that prevents panting in the heat. A dog that cannot open its mouth cannot cool.
Do not assume a dog that recovers quickly is fine. Book the check anyway.
Do not rely on a fan in a closed humid room. Without dehumidification or an air change, you are moving saturated air across an animal that cannot evaporate into it.
Do not judge safety by how you feel. You sweat over your whole body and your dog does not.

- Collapse, staggering, disorientation or a seizure
- Gums that are dark red, brick-coloured, muddy, pale or blue
- Vomiting or diarrhoea after heat or exertion, particularly with blood
- Breathing that becomes noisy, strained or gasping in a flat-faced dog
- Any dog that does not settle within a few minutes of active cooling
- Bleeding from the nose, gums or in the urine or stool after a heat episode
Book a same-day appointment for a dog that had a heat episode and is now quiet, off food or producing less urine, because acute kidney injury and clotting problems declare themselves over the following one to three days.
Book a routine appointment for an older large dog with noisy breathing or a changed bark, for a flat-faced dog you have never had airway-assessed, and for any dog whose heat tolerance has fallen over the last year. All three are situations where a known diagnosis changes what a hot day means for that individual.
