Dog Water Intake: Measuring a Baseline and What a Change in Thirst Means
There is no correct number of millilitres for a dog, only your dog's own baseline. This guide shows how to measure a real 24-hour intake, what a sustained rise in thirst points to including diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's and pyometra, why the skin tent test misleads, and which popular hydration tricks are actively harmful.

There is no single correct amount of water for a dog. Intake depends on body size, diet moisture, air temperature, exercise, coat, age and health, and a number copied from a chart tells you nothing about your own dog.
What is genuinely useful is your dog's own baseline. A dog that has always emptied roughly the same bowl each day and suddenly needs it refilled twice has given you one of the earliest and most reliable warnings in small animal medicine, and it is a warning owners miss because nobody was measuring.
Water intake is measured the same way food is: from a known starting amount, not from an impression.

Increased thirst in an unspayed female dog, particularly in the weeks after a season, can be a pyometra. That is a pus-filled uterus and it is a surgical emergency.
The bacteria and toxins involved damage the kidneys' ability to concentrate urine, so thirst rises before the dog looks obviously ill and sometimes before any discharge appears. A closed pyometra produces no discharge at all and the dog can deteriorate into septic shock over a couple of days. Increased drinking plus lethargy, vomiting or a swollen abdomen in an entire bitch is a same-day emergency.

Why water balance in a dog is not a fixed number
A dog takes water in three ways: drinking, the moisture in food, and water produced by metabolism. It loses water through urine, faeces, and evaporation from the respiratory tract during panting. Paw pads sweat a little, and that contribution is trivial.
Panting is the piece that makes fixed formulas useless. A dog cools itself by moving air across the wet surfaces of the mouth and airways, and every one of those breaths carries water away. A dog that has run for an hour on a warm day has lost far more water than the same dog asleep in a cool room, and its intake that evening will look alarming to anyone comparing it to a chart.
Diet moisture matters just as much. A dog moved from canned food to dry food will start drinking dramatically more, because the water it used to eat now has to be drunk. That change is not a health problem, but it is often mistaken for one, and the reverse change hides a genuine rise in thirst.
The clinically important concept is the concentrating ability of the kidney. Healthy kidneys respond to dehydration by producing small volumes of concentrated urine. When kidney tissue is lost, when the hormone that drives concentration is missing or ignored, or when high blood glucose drags water into the urine, the dog loses water it cannot afford and drinks to keep up. In every one of those diseases, the drinking is compensation, not cause. This is why restricting water in a dog that is drinking too much is dangerous: you remove the compensation and leave the disease.
Measuring a real baseline
This takes one day and it is the single most valuable thing in this article.
Fill a marked jug with a known volume of water each morning. Fill every bowl in the house from that jug and nothing else. Top up from the same jug through the day. The next morning, measure what remains in the jug and subtract.

Count every source. Outdoor bowls, the bowl in the utility room, the pond the dog drinks from, the toilet, puddles on a walk. If you cannot control all of them, note which ones you could not measure and say so.
In a multi-dog house, this only works if the dogs are separated for the day, or if you accept that the number is a household total and interpret changes rather than absolutes.
Repeat on two or three days rather than one, because a single hot afternoon or a long walk skews the figure. Record the ambient temperature and the exercise for each day alongside the number.
Then repeat the exercise twice a year, and any time the food changes. What you are building is a personal reference range, and it is worth more than any published average.
What increased drinking usually means
Diabetes mellitus.
Glucose spilling into the urine drags water with it. The classic picture is drinking and urinating far more, a good or increased appetite, and weight loss despite eating.
Chronic kidney disease.
Damaged kidneys cannot concentrate urine, so large volumes of dilute urine are produced and thirst follows. Usually a middle-aged or older dog, often with weight loss, a dull coat and a reduced appetite.
Cushing's disease.
Excess cortisol, either from an adrenal or pituitary tumour or from long-term steroid treatment. Increased drinking and urination, a ravenous appetite, a pot-bellied outline, thinning coat and panting at rest.
Pyometra.
Covered above. Entire females only, and urgent.
Liver disease and high blood calcium.
Both interfere with urine concentration. High calcium in particular is often driven by an underlying tumour, so it is investigated rather than treated in isolation.
Medication.
Steroids, diuretics and some anti-seizure drugs all increase thirst predictably. This is expected and not a reason to stop the drug, but it should be on the list before an expensive workup starts.
Diet and salt.
A move to dry food, or a diet unusually high in salt, raises drinking without disease. So does a high-protein working diet.
Behaviour.
Some dogs, particularly bored or anxious ones, genuinely drink excessively as a displacement behaviour. This is a diagnosis of exclusion made after the medical causes have been ruled out, never a first assumption.
When a dog is not drinking enough
A dog that stops drinking is usually a dog that feels unwell, and the underdrinking is the symptom rather than the problem.
Nausea suppresses thirst. So does mouth pain from a fractured tooth, an oral mass, a foreign body wedged across the palate, or severe dental disease. Fever reduces interest in everything. Arthritic dogs sometimes stop walking to a bowl that is down a step or on a slippery floor, and dogs in multi-dog homes sometimes stop drinking because another dog guards the bowl.
Practical fixes are worth trying while you arrange an appointment: more bowls in more places, at least one on a non-slip surface, a wider bowl for a flat-faced dog or a dog with a long muzzle, water at room temperature rather than cold, and moisture added to food as wet food or warm water stirred into kibble.
Assessing dehydration at home is less reliable than most sources suggest. The skin tent, lifting the skin over the shoulders and watching it fall, is slow in a thin or old dog whose skin has lost elasticity anyway, and it is falsely reassuring in an overweight dog. Tacky or dry gums, sunken-looking eyes and a slow capillary refill are more meaningful, and all of them appear after significant fluid has already been lost. In practice, a dog that is vomiting, scouring or refusing water needs a vet rather than a home test.
Age matters. Puppies have a higher water turnover for their size and much smaller reserves, so a puppy with gastroenteritis can be seriously dehydrated in a matter of hours while an adult with the same illness is still merely unwell.
The hydration advice that backfires
Flavouring the water with stock.
Commercial stock cubes and gravies are heavily salted and many contain onion or garlic powder, both of which damage dog red blood cells. Adding salt to the water of a dog that may have kidney or heart disease is exactly wrong. If you need to make water more appealing, use a spoonful of the water from plain boiled chicken with nothing added, or add water to food instead.
Human electrolyte and sports drinks.
Formulated for human sweat losses, sweetened, and sometimes containing artificial sweeteners. Xylitol, found in some sugar-free products, causes a rapid collapse in blood sugar in dogs and liver failure. Never improvise electrolytes.
Restricting water overnight.
Reasonable for a few weeks of house-training a healthy puppy under guidance. Dangerous in any dog that is drinking more than it used to, because that dog is drinking to keep up with a loss it cannot control.
Letting a hot dog drink as much as it wants immediately after hard exercise.
Deep-chested breeds are at risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus, and a huge volume of water gulped down alongside swallowed air in an excited dog is a recognised trigger. Let the dog settle and breathe normally first, then offer moderate amounts repeatedly.
Assuming any water outdoors is safe.
Standing water in warm weather can carry cyanobacteria, which produce toxins that kill dogs quickly and for which there is no antidote. Water near roads and driveways can contain antifreeze, which tastes sweet and causes fatal kidney failure. Standing water on farmland carries leptospirosis. Sea water swallowed while chasing a ball raises blood sodium dangerously.
Endless retrieving in water or biting at a hose.
Dogs that repeatedly swallow water during play can dilute their blood sodium enough to cause brain swelling, with wobbling, vomiting, glazed eyes and seizures. It is uncommon and it is an emergency.
The routine that catches problems early

Moisture in the bowl counts as intake. A dog moved from wet food to dry will drink much more without anything being wrong.
What never to do
Do not restrict water to control accidents in a dog whose drinking has increased.
Do not add salt, stock, sugar or human electrolyte powders to the bowl.
Do not treat suspected dehydration at home with fluids under the skin unless a vet has taught you and supplied them for that specific dog.
Do not assume increased drinking in an older dog is just age. Age is not a diagnosis, and the four common causes are all more likely in older dogs.
Do not let a dog drink from stagnant, scummy or unfamiliar water on a walk, and carry your own.
Do not stop a prescribed medication because it has increased thirst. Report it instead.

When to get help
Book an appointment for any sustained increase in drinking over a week or more, for new night-time urination or house accidents in a clean adult dog, or for a dog that has started refusing water.
Go the same day for an unspayed female that is drinking more and seems unwell, for a dog that is vomiting and not drinking, for a puppy or small breed with diarrhoea, or for suspected antifreeze or algae exposure.
Go immediately for collapse, seizures, a distended abdomen, unproductive retching, or neurological signs after heavy water play.

A steady intake, a steady weight and a dog that settles after eating is the picture you are protecting.
Bring the measured 24-hour intake with the dates and the weather, the current food including whether it is wet or dry, the weight trend, the full medication list including any steroid course in the past year, season dates for an entire female, and a first-morning urine sample. Expect the vet to check urine concentration, run blood tests including glucose and kidney values, and image the abdomen if a uterus or an adrenal problem is suspected.
