Dog calcium and bone development: why all-meat diets and calcium supplements both break bones
Calcium is the nutrient where both too little and too much cause disease in dogs. This guide explains how parathyroid hormone strips the skeleton when a meat-based diet is low in calcium and high in phosphorus, why blood calcium can be normal in a puppy whose bones are failing, why large-breed puppies are harmed by supplements, how vitamin D fits in, and why a nursing bitch supplemented in pregnancy is more likely to develop eclampsia.

Quick answer
A dog on a complete, life-stage-appropriate food already has the calcium it needs. Almost every calcium problem in dogs comes from something added to the bowl or from a home-made diet built on meat.
Calcium is the one nutrient where both directions cause disease. Too little breaks bones in growing puppies. Too much distorts the skeleton of large-breed puppies and damages kidneys through excess vitamin D.
If your dog eats a complete commercial food formulated for its life stage, it needs no calcium supplement of any kind. If your dog eats home-prepared food, the calcium content and the calcium to phosphorus balance are the two things most likely to be wrong.
- Meat is very low in calcium and very high in phosphorus, so an all-meat or meat-and-rice diet starves the skeleton while looking generous.
- A blood calcium test can be completely normal in a dog whose bones are being dismantled, because the body defends blood calcium by taking it from bone.
- Large and giant breed puppies are harmed by excess calcium as well as by too little, because they absorb it less selectively during early growth.
- Dogs get almost no vitamin D from sunlight, so vitamin D must come from the diet, and too much of it is toxic.
- A nursing bitch has the highest calcium demand of any dog, and supplementing her during pregnancy makes the emergency more likely rather than less.

A nursing bitch that becomes restless, stiff, tremulous or hot, and then has seizures, is a medical emergency.
This is eclampsia, caused by calcium being pulled into milk faster than it can be mobilised. It progresses to death without treatment, needs intravenous calcium at a veterinary practice, and requires the puppies to come off the milk. Small breeds with large litters are most at risk, usually in the first weeks after whelping.

Why an all-meat diet breaks bones
Bone is not inert scaffolding. It is a mineral bank, and the body will empty it to keep blood calcium in the narrow range that nerves and heart muscle require.
When a dog eats a diet low in calcium, ionised calcium in the blood begins to drop. The parathyroid glands detect this within hours and release parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone recruits the cells that dissolve bone, and calcium is released back into circulation.
Blood calcium therefore stays normal. The skeleton pays for it.
Muscle meat makes this worse than a simple shortage would. It contains very little calcium and a great deal of phosphorus, and a high phosphorus load further stimulates parathyroid hormone. The diet is not merely low in calcium; it is actively driving the hormone that strips bone.
In a growing puppy the effect is fast and visible, because the skeleton is being built at the same time as it is being raided. The bone that forms is thin-walled and poorly mineralised.
What that looks like.
Early, a puppy is simply reluctant. It sits down on walks, does not want to play, and yelps when handled. Owners often read this as a temperament problem or as tiredness.
Established, there is a stiff, shuffling gait, sometimes with the limbs splaying or the pasterns dropping, and obvious pain on handling.
Late, bones fracture from trivial events: jumping off a sofa, being picked up by a child. Spinal fractures cause hind limb weakness and loss of bladder control. Some of this damage does not fully correct even after the diet is fixed.
This is not a historical disease. It occurs wherever meat-based home feeding is common, wherever complete food is expensive, and wherever a raw diet is fed without bone or an equivalent calcium source.
Why adding calcium is not the safe option

Weighing the food is worth doing. Adding anything to it usually is not: a complete diet is balanced as a whole, and a supplement changes ratios rather than topping up a gap.
Adult dogs handle a calcium surplus reasonably well, reducing how much they absorb from the gut and excreting the rest.
Puppies of large and giant breeds do not do this reliably during their fastest growth. A high calcium intake at that stage is associated with developmental orthopaedic disease, including abnormalities of the growth plates and of the cartilage that should be converting into bone.
The result is a paradox owners find hard to accept: the big-boned breeds are the ones most harmed by extra calcium, not the ones that need it.
There is a second mechanism running alongside. Energy intake sets growth rate, and a large-breed puppy grown fast carries more weight on immature joints for longer. Feeding to a lean body condition through the growth period does more for a large dog's joints than any supplement.
Vitamin D compounds the problem.
Dogs synthesise very little vitamin D in their skin, so they depend on the diet for it. Sunbathing does nothing for a dog's vitamin D status.
That makes vitamin D a supplement risk. Excess causes calcium to be deposited in soft tissue, including the kidneys and blood vessel walls, and produces vomiting, excessive thirst and kidney damage. Vitamin D excess has caused commercial food recalls, and the same molecule is used as a rodent poison, which is why a dog that has eaten rodenticide needs the specific product name.
What a good diet looks like at each stage
Puppies.
Feed a food labelled complete for growth, and for large-breed puppies choose one that states it is suitable for the growth of large-size dogs. That wording exists precisely because the calcium and energy specification differs.
Feed to body condition. You should be able to feel ribs easily under a thin fat cover, and see a waist from above.
Adults.
A complete adult food needs nothing added. If you feed fresh food as part of the ration, keep it to a small proportion of the total so it does not unbalance the formulated part.
Pregnancy and lactation.
Demand rises steeply in late pregnancy and enormously during lactation. This is met by feeding an appropriate growth or reproduction diet in increasing amounts, not by calcium tablets.
Supplementing calcium during pregnancy is counterproductive: it suppresses the hormonal machinery the bitch will need to mobilise her own reserves once the puppies are drinking, which is exactly when eclampsia occurs.
Seniors.
Older dogs do not need extra calcium. If an older dog has kidney disease, phosphorus control becomes the priority and that is a prescription-diet decision.
Home-prepared diets.
If you want to cook for your dog, get the recipe formulated by a veterinary nutritionist for that individual dog. Recipes taken from the internet are frequently deficient, and calcium is the single most commonly missing nutrient.
Raw diets.
Whole prey and properly balanced raw diets get their calcium from bone. A raw diet built on boneless meat repeats the all-meat problem exactly, and adding a random quantity of a calcium powder is not a substitute for a formulated ratio.
Ranking the causes of a limping or reluctant puppy
Nutritional bone disease.
Diet history is the giveaway: home-cooked, all-meat, boneless raw, or a puppy weaned onto adult food plus scraps. Pain is generalised rather than in one limb, and the puppy is reluctant to move at all.
Panosteitis.
Shifting lameness in young large-breed dogs, often moving from limb to limb, with pain on squeezing the long bones. Self-limiting but genuinely painful.
Hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
Young, fast-growing large breeds with hot, swollen, painful areas just above the wrists or hocks, often with fever and marked malaise.
Osteochondrosis and elbow or hip dysplasia.
Usually a persistent lameness in one limb or a bunny-hopping gait, in a growing large-breed dog, worse after exercise.
Trauma.
Sudden onset with a known event, and one limb affected. In a puppy with weak bones, the event can be trivial, which is why a fracture from a small fall should prompt questions about the diet.
Infectious causes.
In regions where tick-borne disease is endemic, joint pain and fever have an entirely different cause and treatment. Tell the vet where the dog has travelled.
The routine that catches problems early

The useful record is not what brand is in the bowl, but exactly how much goes in each day and what else the dog is given during the day.
Treats and extras matter here as well as for weight. Once extras exceed roughly a tenth of the daily intake, they begin to dilute the balance of the complete food that makes up the rest.
What never to do
Do not add calcium, bone meal, eggshell powder or a mineral mix to a complete commercial food.
Do not give a growing large-breed puppy an adult or all-life-stages food unless it explicitly states suitability for large-breed growth.
Do not free-feed a large-breed puppy. Growing fast is a risk factor in its own right.
Do not feed cooked bones, and be cautious with raw weight-bearing bones. They fracture teeth, and they cause obstructions and perforations.
Do not use sunlight, cod liver oil or any home remedy as a vitamin D strategy. Fish liver oils can push vitamin A and D far past safe levels.
Do not assume normal blood results mean the diet is fine. Total serum calcium is usually normal in nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, and the diagnosis is made from the diet history and the radiographs.
Do not continue a home-prepared diet through pregnancy and lactation without a nutritionist. The margin for error disappears when a bitch is feeding a litter.

When to get help

The outcome to aim for is dull: an appropriate complete diet, a lean body condition, and nothing added to the bowl.
Go immediately for a nursing bitch showing tremors, stiffness, panting, disorientation or seizures, and take the puppies with you. Also go immediately for a puppy with sudden hind limb weakness, incontinence, or a limb that will not bear weight after a minor event.
Book an appointment within the week for any growing puppy that is reluctant to walk, sits down repeatedly on walks, cries on being lifted, or has a stiff or shuffling gait, and for any dog that has been on a home-prepared or boneless raw diet without a formulated recipe.
At the appointment the vet will take a detailed diet history including brand, exact product, quantity and every extra, plot the growth against body weight records, examine each limb and the spine, and usually take radiographs. Bone density and the appearance of the growth plates on those images are far more informative than blood chemistry.
Bring the photographed label, the daily amount fed, the list of treats and supplements, the weight record, and the name of any recipe you have followed. In nutritional bone disease the diagnosis usually comes from that history rather than from any single test.
