Cold snap and power cut: keeping tropical reptiles, fish and birds alive
A cold snap or power cut damages tropical reptiles, aquarium fish and pet birds in three different ways and on three different clocks. This guide gives the order of actions for each group, explains why feeding stops for reptiles and fish but increases for birds, and covers the improvised heating that kills more animals than the cold does.

Quick answer
A cold snap or a power cut is not one problem. Tropical fish, tropical reptiles and pet birds fail in different ways, on different clocks, and the actions that save one can harm another.
Fish lose the biological filter and the surface movement long before the water gets dangerously cold. Reptiles stop digesting and stop defending themselves against infection as soon as they drop below their working range. Birds can make their own heat but burn through their reserves quickly, and the heating you improvise for them is more likely to kill them than the cold is.
Before the temperature falls, know which of your animals can wait and which cannot. The answer is different for each tank and each enclosure.
- Shrink the space you are heating. Move animals into one small insulated room rather than trying to hold a whole house.
- Insulation holds heat in but never adds any. Blankets and bubble wrap buy hours, not days.
- Stop feeding reptiles and fish for the duration. Food in a cold gut and food in a tank with a dead filter both cause harm.
- Never run an unvented fuel burning heater, a generator indoors, or any heater with a non-stick coated element in a home with birds.
- Restore heat gradually. Rapid rewarming and unthermostatted heat sources cause burns and shock.

Never use a paraffin, kerosene, propane or butane heater, a barbecue, or a petrol generator inside a home that contains birds, and never inside living space at all.
Unvented combustion produces carbon monoxide. Birds have an extremely efficient respiratory system built on air sacs and a one way flow of air across the gas exchange surface, which means they absorb inhaled toxins faster and at lower concentrations than any mammal in the house. A bird can die from a level that leaves people with only a headache.
Separately, many portable fan heaters, halogen heaters and heat lamps have non-stick coated elements or reflectors. Heated polytetrafluoroethylene releases fumes that cause acute, usually fatal, lung damage in birds with no warning smell. If you cannot confirm a heater is free of non-stick coating, do not run it in the same airspace as a bird.

Why cold does different damage to each group
Reptiles stop working rather than feeling cold.
A reptile has no internal furnace. Every enzyme driven process, including digestion, immune response and the clearance of medication, runs at the rate its body temperature allows. Below the species range those processes do not slow politely, they stall.
The specific danger is food already in the gut. A snake or lizard that swallowed prey and then lost its heat source cannot digest it, and the prey decomposes internally. That produces a genuinely dangerous illness that presents as regurgitation, bloating, or a rapidly deteriorating animal. This is why feeding stops as soon as a cold snap is forecast, and why a reptile fed shortly before a heating failure is a same-day veterinary conversation rather than a wait and see.
Immune suppression is the slower consequence. Respiratory infections in reptiles cluster after heating failures and cold rooms, appearing days or weeks later rather than during the event.
Brumation is not a defence. A healthy temperate species prepared for brumation is a different animal from a tropical species accidentally chilled with food in its gut, and the two must not be confused.
Fish lose their filter before they lose their heat.
An aquarium is a small volume of water with a large biological load, kept liveable by nitrifying bacteria on the filter media and by gas exchange at the surface. Both depend on water moving.
When the pump stops, the bacteria in the media begin to die from lack of oxygenated flow. When they die, ammonia stops being converted and starts accumulating. Ammonia burns gills and, at the same time, gill damage reduces the fish's ability to take up oxygen, so the two problems compound.
Temperature falls slowly in a large volume of water and quickly in a small one. A nano tank can lose its working range in an hour while a large aquarium holds for most of a day, which is why the same power cut is an emergency for one owner and an inconvenience for another.
Rapid swings matter more than the absolute figure. A tank that drops and is then reheated quickly commonly produces an outbreak of ich a few days later, because the parasite tolerates the stress better than the fish does.
Birds can make heat but pay for it in calories.
A bird generates its own body heat and holds it with feather structure, fluffing to trap air and tucking a foot and the beak into the plumage. That works, but it costs energy continuously, and a small bird has very little in reserve.
The practical consequence is counterintuitive. A bird in a cold room needs more food available, not less, and needs it where it can reach it without effort.
Draughts and sudden change do more damage than a steadily cool room. A cage against a single glazed window loses heat to the glass all night even when the room reading looks acceptable.
A bird that is already unwell has usually been hiding it. Cold is the stress that reveals it, which is why the fluffed, quiet, floor-sitting bird during a cold snap is nearly always a sick bird rather than a merely cold one.
The first hour
Work in this order. It is deliberately not the order most owners choose.
Shrink the heated space.
Pick the smallest room with the fewest external walls and windows, and move what you can into it. Heating one small room passively with body heat, closed doors and a draught excluder beats trying to hold the whole house.
Insulate before you improvise heat.
Wrap aquariums and enclosures in blankets, duvets, towels or bubble wrap, leaving the top partly open on aquariums for gas exchange and leaving ventilation on bird cages. Insulation does not warm anything. It slows the rate at which the heat already present escapes, and that is usually enough to bridge a few hours.
Polystyrene sheet, if you have it, is markedly better than fabric on the sides and back of a glass tank.
Restore water movement in aquariums.

A thermometer you can read without power, and a way of moving water by hand, are the two pieces of kit that make an outage manageable.
A battery operated air pump is the single most useful item in an aquarium emergency kit. Without one, scoop a jug of tank water and pour it back in from a height, repeatedly, every twenty minutes or so. That looks crude and it works, because it is surface agitation that drives gas exchange.
Protect the filter media.
Take the media out of a stopped canister filter and keep it submerged in tank water, in the tank if possible. Media sitting in a sealed canister of still water goes anoxic and the bacteria die faster than they would in the tank. Never rinse media in untreated tap water at any point, and least of all now.
Stop feeding.
No food for the fish, because uneaten food and fish waste both add ammonia to a tank that can no longer process it. No food for the reptiles, for the digestion reason above. Birds are the exception and should have more available, not less.
Hours two to twelve
Check temperatures with something that does not need power. A simple glass or dial thermometer for the tank and a digital probe thermometer with its own battery for enclosures are worth keeping specifically for this.
Add safe heat carefully if you have it. A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, placed against the outside of an enclosure or floated in a sealed bag in a large aquarium, gives gentle heat with no burn risk to the animal and no fumes. Air activated hand warmers can be taped to the outside of a small enclosure, never inside it and never in contact with an animal.

A tight hide against an insulated wall gives a reptile the warmest, most sheltered microclimate available in a cold enclosure.
Give reptiles a tight hide and let them use it. A snug hide against the warmest wall of an insulated enclosure holds a pocket of warmer air, and the animal will find it without help.
For birds, cover part of the cage to cut draughts while leaving ventilation, keep food and water within reach of the perch the bird is actually using, and move the cage away from glass. Do not seal a bird into a covered cage with a heat source and no way out of the heat.
Keep a written log of the time, the readings, and what you did. It is what a vet will ask for afterwards and nobody remembers it accurately.
Bringing the heat back
Restoring power feels like the end of the emergency. Most of the avoidable damage happens in the next hour.
Restart circulation and filtration before heaters. A submerged heater running in still water creates a hot layer and can crack glass or cook anything against it.
Warm gradually rather than to the top of the range. A reptile that has been chilled for hours should come back into its gradient over hours, with a proper thermal gradient available so it can choose. Blasting a single high temperature at a cold animal that cannot move well is how thermal burns happen.
Check every thermostat and every probe before you trust it. Power interruptions kill thermostats and reset controllers, and the classic post-outage injury is a heat mat running unregulated because its thermostat failed closed.
Test the water. After a stopped filter, treat the tank as if it were newly cycling: test for ammonia and nitrite over the following days and do partial water changes with dechlorinated water matched to tank temperature. Reintroduce feeding slowly and lightly.
Watch reptiles for respiratory signs for two to three weeks. Open mouth breathing, bubbling at the nostrils, clicking, or a change in posture at rest all warrant an appointment.
What never to do
Do not put a heat source inside a bird cage or a small enclosure where the animal cannot move away from it.
Do not run any unvented combustion appliance or generator indoors, and do not use candles, oil burners, incense or scented products near birds at any time.
Do not use a hair dryer to warm an enclosure or an animal. It produces dry, fast moving hot air, and in birds it is also a fume risk from heating elements.
Do not do a large water change with cold or unmatched tap water in an unheated tank.
Do not feed a reptile to help it cope with the cold. It has the opposite effect.
Do not move a chilled reptile into a hot bath or onto a radiator. Sudden rewarming from the surface causes burns because a cold animal moves away too slowly.
Do not assume an animal that survived the cold snap is fine. Illness that starts during a cold event surfaces days later.

When to get help
Contact a vet experienced with the species the same day for any reptile that was fed shortly before the heat failed, any reptile that is not moving normally once it has been rewarmed, any bird that is fluffed, quiet or sitting on the cage floor, and any fish gasping at the surface after circulation is restored.
Go immediately for collapse, open mouth breathing in a reptile or bird, or unresponsiveness in any animal.

The measure of a good outage plan is an animal using its space normally within a day, not simply an animal that survived.
Bring the log: how long the heat was off, the lowest temperature you actually measured, what heat sources you used, when each reptile last ate, and what the water tests showed afterwards. That history usually identifies the problem faster than examining the animal does.
