Winter Indoors With a Bird: Dry Air, Heating Hazards and Draughts
Winter gives a bird one slow problem and one fast one. Dry heated air affects the airway lining, skin and feathers; heating equipment can kill in minutes through non-stick fumes and carbon monoxide. This guide covers what to check before the season, how to raise humidity safely, cage position, bathing in cold weather and the draught myth.

The dry air is worth managing carefully. The heating hardware is worth checking before the season starts, because a bird can die from a new heater, a blocked flue or a scented candle long before anyone notices a humidity problem.

Polytetrafluoroethylene, the material used in non-stick cookware, is also used on some heater elements, space heater plates, heat lamps and small appliances. When overheated it releases fumes that are lethal to birds within minutes, often with no warning smell and no symptoms until the bird is found dead or gasping. Unvented gas, paraffin and kerosene heaters, blocked flues, wood smoke and open fires add carbon monoxide to the same room. If a bird becomes distressed, wobbly, or is found collapsed near a heat source, get every bird and person out into fresh air first and call for help from outside.

Why dry air matters to a bird
Warm air holds more water than cold air. When cold outdoor air is drawn into a house and heated, the amount of water in it does not change but its capacity does, so the relative humidity falls. That is why a well-heated home in winter can be drier than most deserts.
The respiratory tract takes the first hit. From the nostrils down, the airway is lined with mucus and fine hairs that trap and move inhaled dust and organisms out. Drying that lining slows the process and leaves more irritant sitting on the tissue for longer. It does not by itself cause an infection, but it makes the airway less able to deal with one.
Many popular pet birds come from climates that are humid for part or all of the year, and their feathers and skin are adapted accordingly. Persistently dry air leaves the skin flaky and the plumage dull and brittle, and a bird that is uncomfortable preens more.
Dust is the third effect. Powder-down species produce fine feather dust constantly, and in dry, closed-up winter rooms more of it stays in the air. That matters for the bird and it matters for the household, because long-term exposure to bird dust in unventilated rooms is a recognised cause of lung disease in people.
What to fix, in order of how fast it can hurt
Heating equipment.
Read the box on anything new: heaters, heat lamps, oil-filled radiators, hair dryers, air fryers, grills. Anything advertised as non-stick, easy-clean or coated needs to be kept out of the home, or at minimum out of the airspace the bird shares, which in practice means most homes cannot use it at all. Self-cleaning oven cycles are a well known cause of sudden bird deaths.
Combustion and carbon monoxide.
Gas fires, boilers, wood burners and paraffin heaters need servicing and a clear flue. Fit carbon monoxide alarms and test them. Birds are more sensitive to carbon monoxide than people, which is the origin of the canary in the mine, and it remains true in a living room.
Everything scented.
Candles, incense, reed diffusers, plug-ins, aerosol air fresheners and essential oils all go out of the house. Winter is the season people use them most and ventilate least.
Ventilation.
Closed windows concentrate cooking fumes, cleaning products and dust. Air the house daily with the bird in another room, or open windows in adjacent rooms rather than directly onto the cage.
Then humidity.
Once the air is safe, work on making it comfortable.
Getting the humidity right
Measure it. A cheap digital hygrometer near the cage, at cage height and away from a radiator, tells you whether you have a problem at all. Many homes do not.
Aim for a stable moderate level, in the region of 40 to 60 percent. Do not chase a high number: persistently damp air encourages mould, and mould spores cause aspergillosis, which is one of the more difficult avian diseases to treat.
Cool-mist humidifier.
The most effective tool, and the one with a catch. A humidifier that is not emptied, dried and cleaned frequently becomes a device for spraying bacteria and mould into the room. Clean it on the schedule the manufacturer gives, use it in the room rather than pointed at the cage, and never add oils, vapour rubs, or scented additives to the tank.
Bathing.
The most direct benefit to feathers. Most birds enjoy some form of water: a shallow dish, a fine spray of plain lukewarm water, wet greens to roll in, or a shower perch. Offer it in the warm part of the day, in a draught-free room, and let the bird dry naturally with plenty of time before dark.
Water trays and drying laundry.
Shallow trays near a radiator and clothes drying indoors both raise humidity a little. Change tray water frequently, since standing water grows things you do not want aerosolised.
Plants.
Houseplants add a little moisture. Only keep species that are safe for birds, and remember a bird will chew any plant it can reach.

Temperature, draughts and the myths around them
A healthy, fully feathered, acclimatised bird copes with the temperature range a person finds comfortable. What causes problems is instability.
Draughts do not cause colds. Birds do not catch the human common cold at all, and a moving current of air does not create an infection. What a cold draught does do is force a small bird to burn energy to stay warm, which matters a great deal in a bird that is already ill, elderly, underweight, or missing feathers.
Cage position is where this becomes practical. Away from external doors that open onto winter air, away from the direct blast of a heating vent, away from single-glazed windows that get very cold at night, and off the floor, where the coldest air sits.
Window sills deserve a specific warning. They are cold at night and can become dangerously hot in direct winter sun, and a caged bird cannot leave.
Night temperature drops are worth checking rather than assuming. A room that is comfortable at ten in the evening can be much colder by four in the morning if the heating goes off. A minimum-maximum thermometer beside the cage answers this in one night.
If your vet has advised extra warmth for a specific bird, use a thermostatically controlled source outside the cage, positioned so the bird can move away from it, and never use unregulated heat rocks or lamps a bird can reach.
Short days and the light cycle
Winter changes the light as well as the air, and indoor birds live under whatever their household does with the lamps.
Birds need a long, dark, uninterrupted night. In winter that is easy to lose, because people sit up with the lights on in the room the cage is in.
Keep the dark period consistent, and dark. If the bird's room is the living room, a separate sleeping cage in a quiet room is more effective than a cover over a cage with a television flickering beside it.
Consistency also matters for hormonal behaviour. Erratic, long, artificial days are one of the drivers of chronic egg laying in pet hens, and winter evenings are when the schedule most often slips.
The routine that catches winter problems early
Check the hygrometer when you feed in the morning.
Look at the nostrils. They should be clean, open, dry and symmetrical, with no crust, no staining and no matted feathers above the beak.
Watch a minute of breathing at rest, with the bird unaware of you. No tail bob, no open beak, no sound.
Weigh weekly on a gram scale and write it down. Cold rooms increase energy demand, and a bird that is struggling shows it on the scale first.
Look at the feathers in good light. Dull, brittle, dusty plumage and flaky skin build up slowly and are easy to miss day to day.
Test the carbon monoxide alarm at the start of the season.

Preening after a bath is what good feather condition is made of. Offer the bath in the warm part of the day and let the bird finish the job itself.
What never to do
Do not put a bird in the same airspace as a non-stick coated heater, pan, appliance, or a self-cleaning oven cycle.
Do not run unvented gas or paraffin heaters, or a wood burner with a poor flue, in a home with a bird.
Do not add essential oils, vapour rubs or antibacterial additives to a humidifier.
Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, or radiator to dry a wet bird.
Do not place the cage on a window sill, against a radiator, or under a heating vent.
Do not use unregulated heat rocks, heat mats inside a cage, or a lamp the bird can touch.
Do not treat plucking as a humidity problem and wait for spring.
Do not close the house up completely for months. Ventilation matters more in winter, not less.

When to get help
Emergency, immediately: any bird that is gasping, wobbly, collapsed or found unresponsive near a heater, fire or oven. Get everyone out into fresh air first.
Same day for tail bobbing at rest, open-beak breathing, audible clicking or wheezing, or a bird that has gone quiet and fluffed.
This week for crusted or discharging nostrils, repeated sneezing with discharge, staining on the feathers above the beak, a change in voice, flaky skin that is not improving with humidity and bathing, or any plucking.
Bring the humidity readings, the heating setup, the diet, and the weight record. Vitamin A deficiency, chronic sinus disease and aspergillosis all overlap with what owners assume is dry air, and the history usually decides which one is investigated first.
