Bird vaccines: what companion birds actually get, and what protects them instead
Companion parrots and passerines receive no routine vaccines in most of the world, and there is no schedule to be behind on. Vaccination in birds belongs to poultry, racing pigeons, some breeding collections and some raptors. What is normal after any injection, why weight on a gram scale is the earliest sign of illness in a bird, and the quarantine, diet and air quality measures that do the work a vaccine would.

Quick answer
Most companion birds are never vaccinated against anything. What protects them is quarantine, weight tracking and an annual examination.
If you keep a parrot, budgerigar, cockatiel, canary or finch, the honest answer to "what vaccines does my bird need" is almost always none. There is no equivalent of the annual dog or cat schedule for companion cage birds in most of the world.
Vaccination does exist in birds, but it belongs to poultry and to racing pigeons, and to a lesser extent to breeding collections and some raptor work. If your bird has genuinely had an injection at the vet, it was far more likely a medication than a vaccine, and the aftercare question is the same either way.
- Companion parrots and passerines receive no routine vaccines in most countries. This is normal and not a gap in your care.

Which birds are actually vaccinated
Poultry, including backyard flocks.
This is where avian vaccination genuinely lives. Commercial and backyard chickens, ducks and turkeys are vaccinated against several diseases depending on the country, the flock size and the regulations. Marek's disease, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease and fowl pox are among the commonest, and coccidiosis vaccines are also used.
Two points matter for a backyard keeper. Some of these vaccines are given at the hatchery in the first day of life, Marek's in particular, and cannot be given usefully afterwards. And vaccination status is a question to ask at purchase, because it cannot be inferred from a healthy-looking bird.
Avian influenza vaccination is a separate case. Some countries vaccinate poultry, others prohibit or restrict it because it complicates disease surveillance and international trade. The rules change, and they change quickly during an outbreak. Housing orders, movement restrictions and mandatory registration of even small flocks apply in many countries and are enforced.
Racing and fancy pigeons.
Paramyxovirus vaccination is standard in pigeon racing and is a legal requirement for competition in a number of countries. Vaccines against pigeon pox and paratyphoid are also used.
Breeding collections of parrots.
An avian polyomavirus vaccine has been available in some markets, aimed principally at breeding collections where young birds are at risk rather than at single pet birds. Availability has varied over time and between countries, and it has never been a routine measure for a pet parrot living alone in a home.
Raptors and collection birds.
West Nile virus vaccination is used for susceptible species in some regions, mainly in zoological and rehabilitation settings.
Everything else.
Budgerigars, cockatiels, conures, greys, amazons, macaws, cockatoos, lovebirds, canaries and finches kept as pets are not routinely vaccinated. There is no schedule to be behind on.
After an injection: normal and not normal
Your bird may well receive injections without ever receiving a vaccine. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, fluids and sedation reversal are all given by injection, and the aftercare question is identical.
What is expected.
A small, firm swelling at the site. Mild quietness for the remainder of the day. Slightly reduced interest in food that evening, with normal appetite by morning. Some birds are subdued simply from the handling rather than from anything injected.
What is not.
Swelling that grows over hours rather than shrinking over days, or that becomes hot or discoloured. Favouring a leg, or a drooped wing, if the injection was into a limb. Any change in breathing. Persistent fluffing with the eyes closing. Regurgitation. A weight drop.
The immediate reaction.
True acute allergic reactions in birds are uncommon but they happen within minutes rather than hours. This is why it is worth staying at or near the practice for a short period after any injection rather than driving straight home, and why the practice is the right place for it to happen if it is going to.
What you should be measuring.
A bird that eats normally, produces normal droppings and holds its weight is fine, regardless of whether it seems a little quiet. A bird that is bright and chatty but has lost weight is not. Weight beats impression in every case.

A gram scale and a notebook detect illness in a bird days before any change in behaviour does. Weigh at the same time each day, ideally in the morning before the first feed.
Why weight is the vital sign
Birds evolved as prey animals, and a bird that visibly signals illness in the wild is selected against. Concealment is not psychological, it is hardwired, and it persists in a hand-reared parrot that has never met a predator.
What a bird cannot conceal is mass. Illness costs energy, appetite falls before behaviour changes, and the number on the scale moves first.
A gram scale is the most valuable piece of equipment in bird keeping and it costs less than a bag of pellets. Weigh in grams, not in fractions of an ounce, because the resolution matters in a small bird. Weigh at the same time each day, ideally in the morning before the first feed, because a full crop distorts the reading.
Write it down. A single reading is meaningless without a baseline, and the baseline is what makes the change visible.
The other thing weight does is turn a vague worry into a fact you can hand to a vet. "He seems a bit off" and "he has lost weight steadily across four days from his usual figure" produce very different appointments.
Species and individual variation is wide, which is why this article gives no target figures. Your bird's own established baseline is the only number that matters, and the direction of travel matters more than the value.
What healthy looks like
Posture and alertness.
An awake, well bird stands with weight on both feet, feathers held sleek rather than fluffed, and is interested in what is happening in the room. Sitting fluffed, low on the perch, with the eyes half closing during the day is a general sign of illness in any bird.
Breathing.
Quiet and barely visible. Tail bobbing with each breath, open-mouth breathing, clicking or wheezing, or a bird that stops moving to breathe are all abnormal. Respiratory signs in birds progress fast.
Eyes, cere and nares.
Clear, symmetrical eyes fully open. The nostrils clean, open and equal. Any crusting, discharge, staining of the feathers above the nares, or a narrowed nostril needs attention.
Feathers.
A bird in good order preens itself into a smooth, clean, tight covering. Persistently rough plumage, feather dust caked around the vent, or feathers with disrupted structure and colour banding all mean something.
Droppings.
Three parts: a formed faecal portion, a white or cream urate portion, and clear liquid urine. Learn the normal for your bird's diet, because a bird eating fresh fruit produces far wetter droppings than one on pellets, and that difference is frequently misread as diarrhoea.

Learn your own bird's normal in good light while it is well. The comparison is what makes a change visible later.
What actually protects a companion bird
Quarantine of every new arrival.
This is the most effective disease control measure a private keeper has, and the one most often skipped because the new bird looks healthy. It looks healthy because incubating birds do.
Separate airspace is ideal, because much of what spreads between birds travels in feather dust and aerosol. Where that is not possible, a separate room is the minimum, with the new bird fed, cleaned and handled last, and hands washed and clothing changed between.
Several weeks, not several days. A shorter quarantine gives false confidence.
A veterinary examination when you get the bird, and annually after that.
An avian vet will weigh the bird, assess body condition over the keel, examine the eyes, nares, cere, choana, feathers, feet and vent, palpate the abdomen and listen to the chest. Depending on the bird and the situation they may recommend a faecal Gram stain and wet preparation, blood work, and targeted infectious disease testing.
Tests that are genuinely used for new psittacines include screening for chlamydia, for psittacine beak and feather disease virus, and for avian polyomavirus. Which of these are appropriate depends on the species, the source and whether other birds are at risk, which is a conversation with the vet rather than a fixed list.
A diet that is not seed-only.
More pet birds are damaged by diet than by any infectious disease that a vaccine could have prevented. A seed-only diet is deficient in vitamin A and calcium and excessive in fat, and the consequences arrive as respiratory and sinus disease, fatty liver, poor feather quality and, in some species, seizures from low calcium.
Clean air.
The most acutely lethal hazard in an ordinary home is not a virus. Overheated non-stick coatings release fumes that kill birds rapidly, and aerosols, scented products, smoke and self-cleaning oven cycles are all significant. This is a genuine emergency risk with no vaccine and no treatment.
Not mixing species carelessly.
Birds that live comfortably with an organism can shed it to a species that has no tolerance for it. Mixed collections need quarantine and testing rather than the assumption that healthy-looking birds are safe together.
The myths worth naming
"My bird needs its annual jabs like the dog."
No. There is no annual vaccine schedule for pet parrots and passerines. What there should be is an annual examination, which is a different thing and arguably more useful, because it catches diet, weight and organ problems that no vaccine addresses.
"Because my bird lives indoors alone, it cannot catch anything."
Disease arrives on new birds, on second-hand cages and perches, on your clothing after visiting a shop or another keeper's aviary, and in feather dust carried between rooms. Indoor housing narrows the routes; it does not close them.
"A vaccinated chicken cannot get the disease."
Poultry vaccination reduces the severity of disease and the amount of virus shed. It does not always prevent infection. This is well recognised with Marek's disease, where vaccinated birds can still become infected and shed while remaining clinically well. Vaccination is a flock-level tool, not an individual guarantee, and it does not replace biosecurity.
"My bird is off colour because of the vaccine."
For the great majority of pet birds there was no vaccine. If your bird had an injection, ask what it was. Attributing illness to a vaccination that never happened delays the search for the actual cause.
The routine that catches problems early
Observing before the bird knows it is being observed is the trick that makes all of this work. Most birds straighten up and look well the instant a person makes eye contact, which is precisely the behaviour that hides illness.
What never to do
Do not give your bird any vaccine or medication intended for another species, or any product bought online without a diagnosis. Dosing in birds is unforgiving and several drugs safe in mammals are not safe in birds.
Do not skip quarantine because the new bird came from someone you trust. Trust is not a diagnostic test.
Do not treat a fluffed, quiet bird by waiting until morning. Birds decompensate quickly, and the interval between "a bit quiet" and "critical" is often measured in hours.
Do not warm a sick bird with a direct heat source pressed against it or wrap it tightly. Birds have no diaphragm and breathe by moving the sternum, so pressure on the chest suffocates them.
Do not assume a bird that is eating is well. Many ill birds go through the motions at the bowl without swallowing much, which is another reason the scale beats observation.
Do not buy unvaccinated poultry chicks assuming you can vaccinate later. Some of the important poultry vaccines are given in the first day of life and there is no catching up.
Do not ignore a rising number of birds affected in a flock or an aviary. Several birds unwell at once is an outbreak, and in poultry some of those diseases are notifiable to the authorities.

When to get help
Contact a veterinarian who sees birds regularly, the same day, for any of these:
- Weight falling from the bird's own baseline across consecutive days
- Sitting fluffed and low, with the eyes closing during the day
- Any change in breathing, including tail bobbing, open-mouth breathing, clicking or wheezing
- Swelling at an injection site that grows, becomes hot, or causes lameness
- Regurgitation, straining, or a marked change in droppings that is not explained by a diet change
- Any bird from a group where more than one is unwell
- Any bird exposed to overheated non-stick cookware, smoke or aerosols, which is an immediate emergency
Bring these to the appointment: the species and age, the weight log with dates, the source and date you acquired the bird, what other birds live in the house, the exact diet including treats, a sample of fresh droppings on clean paper if you can collect one, photographs of anything you have noticed, and a written list of anything the bird has been given by injection or by mouth with the dates.
Avian veterinary provision differs enormously by country and region. Find your nearest practice that genuinely sees birds before you need one, and register there rather than discovering on a Sunday that the local emergency service has never treated a parrot.
