Birds have a very high metabolic rate and small energy reserves. A budgerigar or a canary that eats nothing can decline within a single day, and a bird that is already unwell declines faster. Owners who remove seed overnight and find the bird weak or dead in the morning are a recurring pattern, not a rare accident.
The seed bowl stays in the cage throughout the conversion. What changes is what else is on offer, how it is presented, and eventually how much seed is measured into the bowl.

Why seed-only diets cause harm
A seed mix is not a diet. It is a collection of oilseeds selected because birds like them, and birds like them because they are energy dense.
Most of what a seed-fed bird eats is fat. Sunflower, safflower, hemp and peanut are the seeds birds pick out first, and they are among the fattiest items in the mix. The millet and canary seed left in the bottom of the bowl is the part the owner sees and mistakes for a full bowl.
The consequences are predictable rather than random. Excess dietary fat with little exercise drives fat deposition in the liver, which is why hepatic lipidosis is so common in older budgerigars and amazons. Low calcium and almost no vitamin D3 leaves a laying hen unable to shell an egg or to contract the muscle that expels it. Low vitamin A damages the lining of the respiratory tract, the sinuses and the mouth, which is why seed-fed birds get recurring sinus infections and white plaques in the mouth.
A formulated pellet exists to remove the choice. Every mouthful has the same composition, so the bird cannot self-select the fatty fraction, and the vitamin and mineral content is built in rather than dusted on the outside where it falls off.
What a successful conversion looks like
The bird's weight stays within a narrow band, day to day, throughout the process.
Droppings stay frequent and well formed. The colour may change, often becoming lighter or taking on the colour of the pellet, and the volume may increase. What must not happen is that droppings become few, small, and dark, because that means little food is entering the gut.
The bird investigates the new food with its beak and tongue, drops most of it, and gradually starts to swallow some. Beak-testing and throwing pellets around is progress, not rejection.
Behaviour stays normal. A bird that is still vocalising, preening, flying and playing at its usual level is coping. A bird that has gone quiet has not.

A gram scale is the single piece of equipment that makes this safe. Weigh at the same time each morning, before the first food of the day.
The conversion, step by step
Get a baseline weight first.
Weigh the bird every morning for a week before you change anything, at the same time, before the first feed. Small birds vary through the day as the crop fills and empties, so a fixed time is what makes the numbers comparable. That week of numbers is your baseline, and 5 percent below the average of it is your stop line.
Have the bird checked before you start.
A bird that is already ill, underweight, or has an undiagnosed liver problem should not be put through a diet change. An avian vet can also tell you whether your bird is overweight and what a sensible target looks like, which matters because a successful conversion is often followed by weight change in either direction.
Choose one pellet and stay with it.
Switching brands halfway restarts the learning. Ask an avian vet which formulation suits your species and life stage, since maintenance, breeding and prescription formulations differ. Size matters more than owners expect: a pellet sized for a macaw is not usable by a budgerigar.
Introduce the pellet as an object, not as a meal.
Put pellets in a separate bowl next to the seed, with the seed still fully available. Many birds ignore the new bowl entirely for weeks. That is normal and it is not a failure.
Make it look like food.
Birds learn what is edible by watching. Eat a pellet yourself in front of the bird, with obvious enthusiasm. Put pellets in a bowl you eat from. If you have a second bird that already eats pellets, let the seed eater watch it. Crush pellets into a powder and sprinkle it over the seed so the taste becomes familiar without the texture being a barrier.
Try warm and moist as well as dry.
Some birds accept a pellet mash before they accept a dry pellet. Soften pellets with a little warm water into a porridge and offer it fresh. Discard anything wet within a couple of hours, because damp food at room temperature grows bacteria and fungus quickly.
Only then start reducing seed.
Once the bird is genuinely eating some pellet, begin measuring the daily seed ration and reducing it gradually rather than removing it. Weigh the seed rather than eyeballing it, because a bowl looks full long after the edible part has gone.
Reduce in small steps and hold at each step.
Cut the measured seed a little, then hold at the new amount for several days while you watch the morning weight and the droppings. If weight holds, cut again. If weight falls, go back up and stay there. There is no prize for finishing quickly.
Offer fresh vegetables alongside, throughout.
Dark leafy greens, capsicum, broccoli, carrot and squash add vitamin A precursors and variety. They are not a substitute for a formulated base, and fruit should stay a small part of the day because it is mostly sugar and water.

Vegetables go in from the first day and stay in permanently. They also give a refusing bird something familiar and safe to eat while it decides about pellets.
Changes that mean act today
A weight drop approaching 5 percent of the starting weight.
Stop the conversion, restore full seed immediately, and speak to an avian vet. Do not press on because the bird "must be about to give in".
Fewer, smaller or darker droppings.
Droppings are the fastest proxy for food intake. A tray with noticeably less on it than yesterday means intake has dropped even if the weight has not caught up yet.
Fluffed feathers, sitting low, half-closed eyes, or sitting on the cage floor.
Birds hide illness until they cannot. Any of these in a bird undergoing a diet change means stop and see a vet the same day.
Vomiting, or seed and mucus stuck to the head feathers.
This is regurgitation onto the face rather than affectionate regurgitation, and it points to crop or gut disease rather than diet preference.
Tail bobbing with each breath, or open-beak breathing.
Respiratory distress is an emergency in its own right and has nothing to do with the conversion. Go now.
The routine that catches problems early
Weigh at the same time each morning, before the first food, and write the number in a book rather than trying to remember it.
Look at the droppings tray before you clean it. Change the paper daily so you are always comparing one day against one day.
Empty and refill both bowls daily rather than topping up, so you can see what has actually been eaten.
Watch the bird eat for a few minutes each day. Seeing a beak actually crush and swallow a pellet is worth more than any amount of inference from a bowl.
What never to do
Do not remove seed overnight and hope for the best.
Do not run a conversion while you are away, travelling, or otherwise unable to weigh the bird daily. Conversions fail quietly and a boarding facility will not notice.
Do not convert a bird that is ill, injured, laying, moulting heavily, or recovering from anything. Add the stress of a diet change only to a bird that is otherwise stable.
Do not mix several pellet brands to "increase the chance one works". It slows learning and makes intake impossible to judge.
Do not add sugar, honey, juice or peanut butter to make pellets attractive. You will create a new preference problem and add fat to a diet you are trying to defat.
Do not use coloured seed sticks, honey sticks or millet as the reward for eating pellets. Those are the very foods the conversion exists to displace.
Do not assume that because the bird is fat, it can afford to skip meals. Fatty liver disease makes a bird less able to tolerate a fast, not more.
