Reversing Obesity in a Pet Bird, Stage by Stage
An overweight bird cannot simply be given less food. Rapid weight loss mobilises fat into a liver that is already loaded, and a bird that stops eating is an emergency within a day. This is the staged version: how to read body condition over the keel, how to change what is in the bowl and how it is delivered, how to rebuild exercise in a deconditioned bird, and what the weekly numbers should be doing.

Obesity in pet birds is common, it is mostly caused by a seed bowl that is never empty and a cage that never demands any effort, and it is reversible. What it is not is a problem you fix by cutting the food down.
A fat bird that goes into a sudden food deficit mobilises fat out of its stores and into a liver that is already carrying too much of it. That is how a diet plan turns into liver disease. The whole art of reversing avian obesity is doing it slowly enough that the bird keeps eating well the entire time.
A full bowl of seed left down all day is the single most common cause of an overweight companion bird.

Birds have high metabolic rates and small energy reserves in usable form. Withholding food, halving the ration overnight, or leaving a bird with only a food it will not eat can cause it to stop eating altogether, and an overweight bird in that state mobilises fat straight into the liver. Small species can deteriorate within a day. Every reduction has to be gradual and tracked on a scale.

Why fat is more dangerous in a bird
A bird's liver stores and processes fat, and it is easily overwhelmed. Long-term excess energy, particularly from oil-rich seeds, leaves fat deposited in the liver itself. The organ enlarges, works less well, and the bird's ability to cope with any additional stress falls away.
Weight also sits on the wrong structures. Birds have no diaphragm. They breathe by moving the sternum and the body wall to ventilate air sacs, and abdominal fat physically limits that movement, which is why an overweight bird pants after a short flight and why anaesthesia is riskier.
Fat also collects visibly. Fatty tumours over the chest and abdomen and yellow fatty plaques in the skin both become more likely, and both are surgical problems on a patient who is a poor surgical candidate.
Then there is what obesity prevents. A bird that cannot fly comfortably stops flying, stops foraging, stops bathing properly, and spends more time sitting at the food bowl. The condition maintains itself.
Reading body condition over the keel
The keel is the ridge of bone running down the centre of the chest. The flight muscle sits either side of it, and the relationship between the two is what you are assessing.
Wet the feathers slightly or part them gently with a finger in good light, and feel with a flat thumb rather than a pinch.
Underweight.
The keel stands out as a sharp ridge and the muscle is hollow either side of it. This is an urgent finding in its own right and it needs a vet.
Ideal.
The keel can be felt as a line, and the muscle rises gently to meet it on both sides without burying it.
Overweight.
The muscle bulges past the keel so the bone is hard to find, and parting the feathers over the chest and lower abdomen shows a pale yellow layer under thin skin. The abdomen may look full and rounded rather than tucked.
Keel score and weight together beat either alone. A bird can gain muscle when it starts flying again, so a stable weight with a better keel score is progress, not a plateau.
Stage one: measure before you change anything

Weigh the bird and weigh the food. Guessing at portions is what created the problem.
Weigh the bird every morning for a week, before the first food, on a gram scale with a perch. Write the numbers down. A single weight tells you nothing, and a week of weights tells you where you are starting from.
Weigh the food too. Put the day's ration in, and weigh what is left the next morning. That number is what the bird actually eats, and it is almost always a surprise.
Check the bowl for hulls. A seed bowl that looks full is frequently a bowl of empty husks, and birds have starved beside one. Blow across the surface before you decide the bird has food.
Book the veterinary check now rather than later. Bloodwork tells you whether the liver is already involved, which changes how carefully the next stages have to be taken, and the vet sets the target weight for the individual bird and species.
Stage two: change what is in the bowl
The goal is a formulated pellet base with vegetables, and seed reduced to a small measured portion or used only as training rewards.
Do the conversion slowly and with the scale in your hand. Offer pellets alongside the usual food, in the same bowl and on a flat surface where the bird eats, and let the bird investigate them without pressure. Some birds take days, many take weeks, a few take months.
Never remove seed until you have direct evidence that the bird is eating pellets: droppings changing colour and texture, pellet crumbs in the bowl, and a weight that holds steady.
Cut the fat, not the volume. Sunflower kernels, peanuts, nuts and millet spray are where most of the calories are. Dropping those and adding vegetables lets the bird eat a similar bulk for far less energy.
Vegetables are the best filler. Dark leafy greens, broccoli, carrot, capsicum, peas and beans give bulk, water and vitamin A precursors, which matters because seed diets are low in vitamin A.
Skip anything sold as a "diet" or "slimming" seed mix. Those are still seed mixes, and the bird will still eat the fattiest pieces first.
Stage three: change how the food arrives

A mix like this is selected through, not eaten evenly. The bird takes the oil-rich pieces and leaves the rest.
Split the daily ration into several portions and put them in different places in the cage, so getting breakfast involves travel.
Wrap portions in plain paper, thread vegetables on a skewer, put pellets inside a foraging toy, and use a bowl with a lid the bird has to lift. Start easy enough that the bird succeeds on the first day, then make it harder.
Feed on a schedule rather than topping up. Birds naturally eat hardest at dawn and again before dusk, and a fixed morning and late-afternoon serving suits that pattern while giving you a clear picture of intake.
Move the bowls apart, and put the water at the other end of the cage from the food.
Stop free access to treats. Every training treat comes out of the measured ration.
Stage four: rebuild movement
A deconditioned overweight bird is an athlete who has not trained in years. It cannot be made to fly its way out of the problem in a week, and pushing it hard risks a crash landing, overheating, or collapse.
Start with climbing. Rearrange perches so the bird has to move between them for food, water and toys, and add ladders and ropes for a bird that does not fly.
Add short flights if the bird is flighted, and let the bird choose them. Recall training a few metres at a time, several times a day, builds fitness without a chase.
Never chase a bird around a room for exercise. Fear-driven flight in an unfit bird ends in an impact, and stress in birds is not a safe training tool.
Increase out-of-cage time. A play stand in the room the family uses gets far more use than one in a spare bedroom.
Watch for panting, open-beak breathing, or a bird that will not leave the perch. Those mean stop, cool down, and build up more slowly.
Stage five: hold it
Once the target weight is reached, the daily portion and the foraging setup become the new normal rather than a temporary programme. Birds regain quickly when the bowl goes back to being full.
Keep weighing weekly. A trend is the earliest warning of both regain and illness.
Recheck the keel monthly, and photograph the bird from the side and from the front in the same spot so changes that are too gradual to notice become visible.
What never to do
Do not remove the seed bowl and hope the bird switches. Birds have starved to death beside a bowl of a food they did not recognise as food.
Do not fast a bird overnight or restrict water.
Do not use human weight-loss products, appetite suppressants, or supplements marketed for liver support without veterinary direction.
Do not judge progress by looks alone. Feathers hide a great deal, and a fluffed bird looks larger.
Do not clip a bird's wings to stop it flying to the food. Flight is the exercise you are trying to restore.
Do not continue a reduction if the bird's appetite drops, the droppings reduce in number, or the bird becomes quiet.

When to get help
Book an avian veterinary appointment before you start, so the target weight, the rate of loss and the state of the liver are known rather than guessed.
Go the same day if the bird stops eating, becomes quiet or fluffed, produces fewer droppings, develops green staining in the urates, has a swollen abdomen, or starts breathing with an open beak at rest.

The end point is a bird that eats a measured, varied diet, works for it, and flies without panting.
Go immediately for collapse, laboured breathing, or a bird sitting on the cage floor. An overweight bird has less reserve than a lean one, and the margin between coping and not coping is narrow.
