Bird Near-Drowning: Rescue and the 72-Hour Recovery
Birds drown in toilets, sinks, buckets and deep water bowls, and wet feathers leave them unable to fly or hold heat. This guide covers safe rescue with the head supported, why swinging and chest compressions injure birds, gentle warming with an escape route, and the 72-hour watch for aspiration pneumonia that appears long after the bird looks recovered.

Quick answer
Pet birds drown indoors, in ordinary household water. Toilets, washing-up bowls, mop buckets, deep water dishes, aquariums, cooking pots, drinks glasses, and full sinks all kill birds every year. A bird that lands on the surface cannot get purchase on a smooth vertical side, and wet flight feathers stop it flying out.
If you get to the bird in time, the danger is not over. Two things go wrong afterwards: the bird chills extremely fast because soaked feathers lose all their insulation, and water that reached the airway can cause a pneumonia that declares itself a day or two later.
The aim after a near-drowning is a warm, dry, quiet bird under observation, and a vet appointment booked regardless of how well it looks.
- Lift the bird out head first and upward, keeping the head above the level of the body.
- Never swing a bird by the legs or body to clear water. That advice comes from dog first aid and it fractures avian bones and ruptures air sacs.
- Blot dry with a towel, then provide gentle warmth with an escape route, and let the bird settle.
- Every near-drowning needs a veterinary check, even a bird that looks completely normal within minutes.
- The worst signs often appear 24 to 72 hours later, so the watching period is days, not minutes.

A bird's sternum and keel do not compress the way a mammal's ribcage does, and forced air can rupture the air sac system. Owner-performed avian resuscitation causes injury far more often than it saves a life. If the bird is not breathing, get it into a covered carrier with the head supported and drive to an emergency vet while someone phones ahead.

Why water is so dangerous to a bird
Feathers work by holding a layer of air against the skin. Preen oil and feather structure keep water at the surface for the short splash of a bath, but a bird that goes fully under, or that falls into water with detergent in it, loses that layer completely.
Once soaked, a bird has no insulation and a very high surface area for its mass. Heat drains away far faster than in a mammal of similar size. A budgie can become dangerously cold in the time it takes to fetch a towel.
Soaked flight feathers also mean the bird cannot fly. Faced with a smooth-sided bucket, sink, or toilet bowl, it has nothing to grip and nothing to push against. Birds tire quickly when they cannot get a foothold.
The airway problem is specific to birds. The avian respiratory system does not end at the lungs. Air sacs branch through the body cavity and, in many species, into some bones. Water that gets past the glottis spreads further than it would in a mammal and is much harder for the body to clear or for a vet to drain.
That is why the delayed picture matters so much. Even a small amount of aspirated water, especially dirty or soapy water, seeds an infection that takes a day or two to become obvious, by which time the bird has been quietly declining.
The rescue, step by step
Lift the bird out with the head up.
Cup one hand under the body and lift so the head stays above the level of the chest and abdomen. Do not grip around the chest. A hand closed around a bird's body stops it breathing, because there is no diaphragm and the sternum has to be free to move.
Let water drain from the beak, gently.
Hold the bird with the body supported and the head tilted only slightly downward for a few seconds so anything in the mouth runs out. That is the whole manoeuvre. Do not shake, swing, tip the bird upside down, or press on the body.
Blot, do not rub.
Wrap the bird loosely in a soft, dry towel and press gently to soak up water. Change to a second dry towel when the first is wet. Rubbing damages feathers and adds stress.
Warm gently, with a way out.
Put the bird somewhere quiet and warm. A carrier or small box lined with towel, with a heat source such as a covered warm water bottle or a heat pad against one end only, so the bird can move away from it. A commonly used supportive range for a sick or chilled bird is roughly 29-32 C, but the escape route matters more than the exact figure: a bird that starts panting, holding its wings out, or pressing away from the heat is too warm.
Do not use a hairdryer.
Many hair tools have coatings that release fumes lethal to birds when hot, and the noise and blast are terrifying to a bird already in shock. If you must speed up drying, use ambient room warmth and airflow that is not blowing directly on the bird.
Cover and quieten.
Drape a light cloth over part of the carrier. Turn off music and television. Keep other pets and children away. Stillness is treatment at this stage.
Do not offer water or food yet, and never syringe anything into the beak.
A bird that has just aspirated is at high risk of aspirating again. Leave fluids to the vet.
Phone the vet now.
Even if the bird looks fine. Say what liquid it was, how long the bird was in it, and whether it went under.

Recovery milestones, and what should be happening when
Use this as a watching schedule. Any step backwards at any point means an immediate vet visit rather than continued waiting.
First 15 minutes.
The bird should be gripping, holding its head up, and reacting to you. It may be shivering or shaking, which is expected in a wet bird. Breathing should be quiet once the panic passes. Tail bobbing, open-beak breathing, or clicking at this stage is an emergency.
First hour.
Shivering should be settling as the bird warms. Feathers should be drying and starting to sit properly. The bird should be able to perch or at least stand steadily. A bird still cold, fluffed, and unsteady after an hour of gentle warming needs to be seen now.
Two to four hours.
The bird should be preening. Preening is a good sign: it means the bird has enough reserve to care for its feathers and has stopped being purely in survival mode. It should show interest in food and water when offered, though appetite is often reduced.
First evening.
The bird should be perching, alert, eating something, and producing droppings. Droppings may be more watery than usual from stress. Breathing should be silent and the tail should be still.
24 hours.
This is when aspiration pneumonia starts to appear. Watch for a bird that is quieter than yesterday, fluffed, sitting low or on the cage floor, eating less, or bobbing its tail. Weigh the bird if you have a gram scale. Any of these means go now, not tomorrow.
48 to 72 hours.
The highest risk window for delayed respiratory disease closes around here, but not sharply. A bird that has eaten normally, kept its weight, perched, vocalised in its usual voice, and breathed silently through this whole period has most likely come through it.
One to two weeks.
Watch for feather damage from the immersion, especially if the water contained detergent, which strips the feather surface. Damaged feathers may look scruffy until the next moult. Skin irritation from soap or chemicals can appear over several days.
Preventing the next one
What never to do
Never swing, shake, or hold a bird upside down to clear water. This is dog and cat advice. Bird bones are light and the air sac system is easily ruptured.
Never do chest compressions on a bird. The keel does not compress and you will injure it.
Never blow hard into a bird's beak.
Never grip a bird around the body. Compression over the sternum suffocates it.
Never use a hairdryer, a heat gun, or an oven to dry or warm a bird.
Never put a wet bird under a bright bare bulb or directly against an uncovered heat source. Burns and overheating are both easy.
Never give water, food, syringe fluids, or medication by mouth after a near-drowning.
Never skip the vet because the bird recovered quickly.
Never assume the bird can fly out of anything. Wet feathers remove that option entirely.

When to get help
Go immediately for a bird that is limp, unresponsive, cold and unable to right itself, breathing with visible effort, making any airway noise, or that went into hot, soapy, bleached, or chemically treated water.
Go the same day for any bird that was fully submerged, any bird that came out soaked, any bird that shook its head repeatedly afterwards, and any bird that is still fluffed and quiet an hour later.
Phone the same day even for the bird that got out instantly and looks perfect, so the clinic can advise on the watching period.
Come back urgently at any point in the following three days if the bird becomes quieter, fluffs up, loses weight, sits on the cage floor, eats less, changes voice, or begins to bob its tail.
Bring the details that matter: what the liquid was, how deep, how long, whether the head went under, what the bird did immediately afterwards, and the bird's usual weight. If detergent or cleaning product was involved, bring the container so the vet can read the ingredients.
