Birds do not shed fur, and no deshedding tool, slicker brush, or grooming rake should ever touch a bird. Those tools are built to pull loose undercoat out of a mammal, and on a bird they break feather shafts and tear skin.
What birds do instead is moult. They drop old feathers and grow replacements on a schedule set by daylight, hormones, and nutrition. Your job is to support that process, not to speed it up mechanically.

A developing feather, called a blood feather or pin feather, has a live artery running up the shaft. Breaking one causes bleeding that a small bird can lose a dangerous share of its blood volume to. If a blood feather breaks and bleeds, apply gentle direct pressure and contact an avian vet the same day.

Why brushing is the wrong model for a bird
Mammal coats have a loose undercoat that a tool can comb out without damaging the animal. Feathers are nothing like that.
A feather is anchored in a follicle and interlocked with its neighbours by microscopic hooks. Combing separates those hooks, which is exactly what a bird's preening restores.
More importantly, the bird's own preening is functional. Preening zips the feather vanes back together, spreads oil or powder for waterproofing, and removes the waxy sheath from new feathers.
Any tool you use interrupts that work. It also removes the fine powder or oil layer that keeps the plumage water resistant.
So the correct grooming intervention for a healthy bird is close to zero. You supply water, food, light, and sleep, and the bird does the rest.
What a healthy moult looks like
A moult is gradual. Most companion birds replace their plumage over weeks, dropping a few feathers at a time so they are never flightless and never exposed.
It is symmetrical. If the fourth flight feather drops from the left wing, the matching one on the right usually follows soon after.
You will see pin feathers: short, waxy, quill-like shafts on the head and neck, each of which unwraps into a normal feather as it matures.
The skin underneath stays covered. At no point in a normal moult should you see naked skin on the chest, belly, back, or under the wings.
Behaviour changes are common. Many birds are quieter, less tolerant of handling, and more sleepy during a heavy moult. Pin feathers on the head are genuinely tender.
Appetite usually goes up. Growing a full set of feathers is metabolically expensive.
Changes that mean act today
Bare skin.
Feather loss that exposes skin is not moulting. It points to plucking, feather destructive behaviour, parasites, or systemic disease.
Loss on the head and face.
A bird cannot reach its own head. Head feather loss means either another bird is doing it or there is a medical cause such as viral disease. This changes the urgency considerably.
Bleeding from a feather shaft.
Blood feathers bleed freely. Small birds have very little blood to spare, so treat this as same-day urgent rather than a wait-and-see problem.
A moult that never ends.
Continuous heavy moulting across months, or feathers that grow in stunted, pinched, or discoloured, suggests a nutritional or endocrine problem and needs bloodwork.
The routine that supports a moult
What never to do
Do not use a deshedding blade, slicker brush, flea comb, or grooming rake on a bird.
Do not pull out feathers that look ready to fall. If it is ready, it will release on its own.
Do not trim wing feathers during a moult. Freshly grown flight feathers may still be blood feathers, and a clipped bird also loses the protection those long feathers give the growing ones beside them.
Do not bathe a bird in soap, shampoo, or detergent. Plain lukewarm water only, because surfactants strip the waterproofing layer.
Do not use a hairdryer. Non-stick coatings on some heating elements release fumes that are rapidly fatal to birds, and hot air damages skin.

When to get help
Book an avian veterinarian this week for any visible bare skin, feather loss on the head or face, stunted or deformed new feathers, or a moult that has run continuously for months.
Go the same day for a bleeding feather shaft, a bird sitting fluffed on the cage floor, laboured breathing, or a weight drop during a moult.
Bring the species and age, the full diet including treats, the weekly weight record, the lighting and sleep schedule, how long the feather loss has been going on, and photographs of both wings spread if you can take them safely.
