The cold bird: hypothermia, safe rewarming, and the sick bird that only looks cold
A fluffed, hunched bird is a posture, not a diagnosis. This guide explains why birds cool faster than mammals, what hypothermia looks like early, established and late, how to rewarm without burns or a blood pressure crash, why feeding a cold bird kills it, and the eight conditions that look identical from across the room.

Quick answer
In a small bird, the difference between cold and critically ill is decided by handling and weighing, not by looking from across the room.
A fluffed, hunched, quiet bird is the most common emergency picture in companion birds, and cold is only one of the things that produces it. A bird conserving heat in a chilly room and a bird collapsing from infection look identical from a distance. What separates them is the temperature at cage height and how the bird responds to warmth in the first hour.
Warming is almost always the correct first action, because a seriously ill bird becomes cold as well, and gentle warmth costs nothing. What is dangerous is feeding a cold bird, heating it quickly, or using a heat source it cannot move away from.
- Warmth first, food later. A chilled bird's crop and gut stop moving, and food put into them ferments.
- Rewarm with gentle ambient heat over minutes to an hour, not with a hot object pressed against the bird.
- Small species cool fastest, and unweaned chicks cannot regulate temperature at all.
- A bird that is fluffed in a normally warm room is not cold. It is ill, and the clock is short.
- Never wrap a bird's body. It has no diaphragm and breathes by moving the sternum.

Two things kill more chilled birds than the cold does.
Feeding a cold bird. Crop emptying and gut motility only happen at normal body temperature. Food or formula placed into a chilled bird sits in the crop, ferments and produces a sour, distended crop, and a weak cold bird aspirates far more readily than a well one. This is the commonest way an owner kills a chilled chick while trying to help. Bring the bird up to normal temperature and normal activity first, then let a vet decide about feeding.
Wrapping the body. Birds have no diaphragm. They move air by expanding and contracting the sternum and ribcage, so anything that binds the chest, including a towel wrapped for warmth, a hand closed around the body, or a snug fabric pouch, suffocates them. Warmth is applied to the air around a bird, never by compressing it.

Why a bird cools faster than you expect
A bird carries a higher core temperature than a mammal, so the difference between it and a cold room is larger, and heat flows down that gradient faster. It also runs a higher metabolic rate, which is expensive: a bird generates heat well but has very little stored fuel to generate it from. A small parrot that misses a night of eating is already running short.
Body size decides the pace. Heat is lost across a surface and generated in a volume, so the smaller the bird the more surface it has for each gram of body it has to warm. A budgerigar chills in the time it takes a macaw to look uncomfortable.
Insulation is entirely air trapped between feathers, and it fails in three ways: water displaces the air, oil collapses the feather structure, and a bird too weak to hold its feathers erect cannot create the air layer at all. That last one is why very ill birds go cold even in a warm room.
Feet tell you what the bird is doing about it.
Birds regulate heat largely by controlling blood flow to bare legs and feet. Standing on one leg with the other tucked into the feathers is ordinary thermoregulation and is normal in a comfortable bird. Both feet cold to the touch, with the bird sitting low and fluffed, means the bird is actively conserving. Body warmth lost from the chest and under the wings means conservation has already failed.
What a cold bird looks like, stage by stage
Early.
Feathers fluffed out, one foot tucked, the bird sitting closer to a heat source or on the warmest perch, quieter than usual. Appetite often goes up at this stage, because the bird is burning fuel to make heat.
Established.
The bird moves down the cage to the lowest perch or the floor, stays fluffed, closes its eyes intermittently, and is reluctant to move or fly. Feet are cold. Shivering may be visible as a fine tremor through the body and wings. Appetite falls.
Late.
The bird cannot grip a perch, does not respond normally to the room, and is cold on the body rather than just the feet. Breathing slows or becomes laboured. Shivering stops. This stage carries a poor outlook without veterinary care, and it can be reached within hours in a small bird.
The look-alikes: why fluffed is not a diagnosis
A fluffed, quiet bird is a posture, not a cause. The single most useful question is whether the room is genuinely cold, and the second is whether an hour of warmth changes anything.

The practical rule is that warmth is the right first move for every row of that table, and that only the first row is fixed by it.
How to rewarm a bird safely
Warm the air, not the bird.
Put the bird in a small enclosed space such as a carrier or a ventilated box, and place the heat source outside it, at one end. The bird must be able to move to the cooler end. This single arrangement prevents almost every rewarming injury.
Use a source that cannot burn.
A room heater at a distance, a heat mat under one half of the outside of a carrier, or a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel and placed under part of the floor are all reasonable. What is not reasonable is any hot surface the bird lies directly on. A weak bird will not move off it, and contact burns in birds are deep, slow to show and frequently fatal.
Go gradually.
Minutes to an hour, not seconds. Fast rewarming dilates peripheral vessels quickly and can drop blood pressure in an already compromised bird.
Keep it quiet and dim.
Partial covering, low light and no handling. Every extra minute of stress costs a bird that is already short of fuel.
Nothing by mouth until the bird is warm, upright and alert.
Then let a veterinarian decide about food and fluids. The temptation to syringe something sweet into a weak bird is strong and it is how chilled birds are lost.
Watch for the appliance that kills faster than the cold.
Non-stick coatings release fumes when overheated that kill birds within minutes, and those coatings appear on some heaters, some heat-lamp bulbs, hairdryers, and self-cleaning oven linings. Never place a bird near a heating appliance you have not confirmed is free of them, and never point a hairdryer at a bird.
The wet bird, and the oiled bird
Water is the fastest way a companion bird becomes hypothermic indoors. A bath in a cool room, a fall into a sink or toilet, an enthusiastic spray bottle in winter, or rain into an outdoor aviary all strip the insulating air layer, and evaporation then pulls heat out actively.
Blot rather than rub, with a towel around the shoulders and the chest left completely free. Move the bird to a warm, still room and let it dry in warm air. Do not aim hot air at it and do not leave it in a draught to "air dry".
Oil is a different problem and warmth alone does not fix it. Cooking oil, butter, sunscreen and ointments collapse feather structure and the bird cannot restore it by preening. An oiled bird needs veterinary decontamination, and in the meantime it is at continuous risk of chilling.
What changes by species, age and season

Cold air pools at floor level. A fabric hide is a hiding place, not a heat source, and a bird inside one is not being warmed.
Unweaned chicks.
A young chick cannot maintain its own body temperature and depends entirely on brooder heat. This is the group in which chilling and the feed-a-cold-chick error kill most often, and a chick with a crop that is not emptying is always a veterinary case.
Small species.
Budgerigars, lovebirds, finches and canaries chill much faster than a large parrot in the same room, and a finch that has been off food overnight has almost no reserve.
Thin, old and moulting birds.
Weight loss removes fuel, age removes resilience, and a bird part-way through a moult has genuine gaps in its insulation.
Clipped birds.
A bird that cannot fly cannot move to a warmer part of the room, and it cannot get off a cold floor if it falls.
Acclimation matters more than absolute temperature.
A bird gradually accustomed to a cooler house copes far better than a bird moved suddenly from a warm room to a cold one. Sudden change is the risk factor, which is why hypothermia cases cluster around heating failures, house moves, and the first cold night of the season.
It is not only a winter problem.
Air conditioning outlets, a cage in the path of a vent, and a bird bathed in a cool room in summer produce the same picture in August as in January.
The routine that prevents it

A weekly weight is the most sensitive tool an owner has. A bird burning fuel to stay warm loses weight before it looks unwell.
What never to do
Never feed, syringe or hand-feed a bird that is cold to the touch.
Never wrap or hold a bird in anything that presses on its chest.
Never use a heat source the bird cannot move away from, including a heat mat inside the carrier or a hot water bottle under the bird itself.
Never use a hairdryer, an oven, a microwave-heated pack placed against the bird, or any appliance you have not confirmed is free of non-stick coating.
Never assume a fluffed bird in a warm room is cold. That bird needs a vet, not a heater.
Never give alcohol, honey water, human medicines or herbal remedies to a collapsed bird.
Do not cancel the vet because the bird improved with warmth. A bird that became hypothermic without a genuinely cold room has an underlying problem, and warmth has only bought time.

When to get help

The endpoint of successful rewarming: feathers smooth, gripping the perch, engaged with the room.
Contact an avian veterinarian immediately for any bird that is cold on its body rather than just its feet, cannot perch, is unresponsive, or has been found on the cage floor.
Go the same day for a bird that is fluffed and quiet in a room that is not cold, for any unweaned chick with a crop that is not emptying, and for any bird recovered after escaping outdoors, because predator contact and trauma matter as much as the cold.
Book an appointment even after a good recovery if the bird became hypothermic without an obvious environmental cause. In that situation the cold was a symptom, and the reason for it is still there.
