Water is the treatment, not the problem. A bird passing more liquid than usual is often losing fluid because its kidneys are failing, and taking water away accelerates the process that is depositing crystals in its joints. The pale deposits themselves are chalky crystal, not pus. Cutting or squeezing one gives you an open wound over a joint that heals badly, becomes infected easily, and can cost the bird the toe.

Why birds get gout when mammals mostly do not
A mammal turns waste nitrogen into urea, dissolves it in a large volume of water, and passes it as urine. That works because a mammal can afford the water.
A bird cannot. Flight makes weight expensive and an embryo developing inside a sealed shell cannot store a soluble toxin, so birds convert nitrogen to uric acid instead. Uric acid can be excreted as a semi-solid paste with very little water, which is the white or cream part of a normal dropping.
The trade-off is solubility. Uric acid stays dissolved in blood only within a narrow margin. Push the concentration up, and it precipitates as needle-shaped crystals in whatever tissue it happens to be sitting in.
Two things push it up. The first is kidney disease, because the kidneys are what clear it. The second is dehydration, because less water means a higher concentration in the same amount of blood. Most affected birds have both, and each makes the other worse.
Where the crystals land decides which disease you see. In and around joints and tendon sheaths, it is articular gout, which is chronic, visible, and painful. On the surface of the heart, liver, air sacs, and kidneys, it is visceral gout, which tends to follow rapid, severe kidney failure and often kills before anyone knows what is happening.
Articular gout, and why it is misread
The classic picture is a bird in its middle or later years with thickened, irregular toe and hock joints, moving carefully, shifting weight from foot to foot, and reluctant to grip.
Look closely at thin-skinned areas over the joints and you may see the deposits themselves: pale cream, chalky, sitting under the skin like small beads. In a budgie's toes they can be obvious once you know what you are looking at.
Owners almost never reach gout on their own, and the reasons are understandable.
It looks like arthritis.
An older bird with stiff, swollen joints that moves less than it used to fits everyone's mental model of arthritis, and birds do get degenerative joint disease as well. The difference is that gout is driven by a metabolic problem that is still running, so the management is entirely different.
It looks like an injury.
Lameness on one leg after a night fright or a bad landing is common, so a swollen foot is easily attributed to a knock. What does not fit an injury is lameness that changes legs, multiple joints involved, both feet affected, or swelling that appeared without an event.
It looks like bumblefoot.
Pressure sores on the underside of the foot are a genuinely common problem, and they also make a bird reluctant to perch. Bumblefoot sits on the plantar surface, is often red, smooth, and shiny or scabbed, and relates to perch surface and body weight. Gout sits around the joints themselves, is pale and chalky, and relates to the kidneys.
It waxes and wanes.
Birds have better days and worse days with gout, and an owner who sees a good day concludes it has resolved.
And birds hide pain.
A bird that has been sore for weeks still eats, still steps up, and still talks. Discomfort is expressed in posture and small choices, not in complaint.
Visceral gout, the form you do not see
Visceral gout is urate deposited as a fine white coating on the surface of the internal organs, most often after acute or severe kidney failure.
There is nothing to see on the outside. The bird is fluffed, quiet, off its food, losing weight, sometimes passing more water than usual, and then it deteriorates. Many cases are diagnosed only on post-mortem examination.
That sounds hopeless, but it carries a practical message. A bird showing vague illness with increased thirst or a wetter dropping is a bird whose kidneys deserve investigating now, while there is still something to protect. Blood work and imaging in that window are worth far more than an explanation afterwards.
It also explains why some birds with articular gout are much sicker than their feet suggest. The joints are the visible tip of a whole-body problem.
What drives it
Kidney damage of any cause.
Infection, tumours, toxins, and chronic degeneration all reduce clearance. Once a large share of function is lost, uric acid begins to accumulate.
Dehydration.
An empty, contaminated, or hard-to-reach water bowl. A bird too ill to drink. Heat. A long journey. Diarrhoea. Any of these concentrate uric acid quickly, which is why gout so often appears in the aftermath of another illness.
Vitamin A deficiency.
A lifetime on seed damages the lining of the urinary tract as it damages every other moist lining in the body, and it is a well-recognised background factor.
Too much protein for the species.
Granivorous pet birds are not built for a diet heavy in animal protein. Feeding a seed-eating parrot large amounts of meat, cheese, egg, or a high-protein feed designed for another species increases the nitrogen load its kidneys must clear.
Over-supplementation.
This one surprises owners, because it comes from trying to help. Excessive vitamin D3 and calcium supplementation can damage the kidneys, and supplements are easy to overdo in a small bird. Never add a mineral or vitamin product on top of a formulated pellet diet without veterinary advice, because pellets are already supplemented.
Medications that stress the kidneys.
Some antibiotics and some anti-inflammatories are hard on avian kidneys, particularly in a dehydrated bird. This is one of the reasons leftover medication from another animal is dangerous, and one of the reasons your vet will ask what the bird has already been given.
Heavy metal exposure.
Zinc and lead damage multiple organ systems including the kidneys. Galvanised wire, cheap toy clasps, old paint, and curtain weights are the usual sources.
Genetics and individual susceptibility.
Some birds develop gout without any of the above being identifiable, and budgerigars are seen relatively often. That does not change the management, which is still hydration, diet, kidney support, and pain control.
How a vet actually confirms it
Appearance alone is not a diagnosis, and this is a case where guessing has consequences, because the treatment for infection, injury, and gout are not the same.
An avian vet may sample the pale material and look at it under a microscope, where urate crystals have a characteristic needle shape. That is the most direct answer available.
Blood work measures uric acid alongside the rest of kidney function. One caveat matters: uric acid rises after a meal, so timing affects the result, and it does not rise at all until a large amount of kidney function is already gone. A single normal value does not clear a bird, and a single high value is interpreted in context rather than alone.
Radiographs show the size and density of the kidneys, any metal in the digestive tract, and the state of the joints.
The history you bring does a lot of the work: what the bird eats, what supplements it gets, how much it drinks, what its droppings look like, what medication it has had, and what its cage is made of.
Living with it, and what actually helps
Articular gout is managed rather than cured. Deposits that have formed do not tidy themselves away, so the aim is to slow the process, reduce the pain, and make the cage survivable.
Water, constantly and obviously.
Fresh water at least twice daily in bowls washed with detergent, not wiped. More than one water source. Bowls placed where a bird with sore feet does not have to climb to reach them.
Water in the food.
Soaked pellets, chopped wet vegetables, and a slightly higher humidity all add fluid without asking the bird to do anything.
Diet correction.
A formulated base with vegetables rather than seed alone, and no high-protein additions unless your vet has asked for them. Remove the supplements you added yourself and let the vet decide what, if anything, is needed.
Perches the bird can actually use.
Lower everything. Flat platform perches and wide branches spread the load in a way a narrow dowel does not. Vary the diameter so no single point takes the pressure all day. Soft wrapping can help, but avoid abrasive or sand-covered perch covers entirely, because a bird with sore joints cannot move away from them.
A cage laid out for a bird that will not climb.
Food, water, and a resting spot all reachable without a jump. Soft flooring under favourite perches. Nothing at height it will feel obliged to reach.
Pain relief, chosen by a vet.
Pain control genuinely improves these birds. It has to be a veterinary decision, because several of the drugs that would be reached for first are also hard on kidneys, and the choice depends on where the bird's kidney function actually sits.
Weight, tracked weekly.
Excess weight loads sore feet, and unexplained loss is a sign the underlying disease is progressing. Either way, the gram scale is how you know.

A single narrow dowel loads the same points of the same joints all day. Varied diameters, flat platforms, and lower placement are what a bird with painful joints needs.
The routine that catches it early
Quiet daily contact is where owners notice a bird standing differently, shifting weight, or resenting a hand near its legs. Note it rather than dismissing it as mood.
What never to do
Never cut, lance, squeeze, or drain a urate deposit. It is crystal, not pus, and the wound you make over a joint may never close properly.
Never restrict water, and never withhold water overnight to reduce mess. Dehydration is one of the drivers of this disease.
Never give a human gout medicine. The drugs used in people behave differently in birds, and one of them has been shown to make urate deposition worse in a bird species rather than better. Dosing is a veterinary decision made against the individual bird's kidney values.
Never give a leftover anti-inflammatory from a dog, cat, or another bird. Several are hard on kidneys that are already compromised, which is exactly the wrong thing for this patient.
Never add calcium, vitamin D3, or a general mineral supplement to a diet that is already formulated, unless your vet asked you to.
Never assume a swollen foot is a sprain and wait a fortnight. Shifting or bilateral lameness in a bird deserves a look, and the underlying kidney problem is what you are racing.
Never leave a bird with painful feet on a single narrow dowel or on abrasive perch covers.
Never treat weight loss in a gout patient by adding meat, cheese, or a high-protein product on your own initiative. Talk to the vet about how to add calories without adding nitrogen load.
