Bird food safety: what spoils, how fast, and the illnesses that follow
Companion birds do not eat raw meat diets, so the real food safety question is spoilage: how fast wet food goes off in a bowl that sits at room temperature, what grows on stored seed and nuts, and why home sprouting is the highest-risk food most bird keepers prepare. This guide explains why the crop makes birds different, gives the practical windows and storage rules, and describes crop stasis, yeast overgrowth, aspergillosis and aflatoxin so they are recognised early.

Wet food in an open bowl at room temperature is a culture medium. The clock starts the moment it goes in.

Those risks are all controlled by the same three things. Keep food dry and cool in storage, take wet food out before it warms through, and wash bowls rather than rinsing them.

Why a bird is different from a dog
The crop is the reason. It is an expandable pouch at the base of the neck that stores food before it passes on to the stomach, and it sits at the bird's own body temperature, which is higher than ours.
Food that arrives already carrying a heavy bacterial or yeast load enters an environment that could not be better designed to multiply it: warm, moist, still, and full of nutrients. In a dog, contaminated food moves through a strongly acidic stomach fairly quickly. In a bird it can sit for hours in an incubator.
That is why the same piece of spoiled food that would give a dog a day of loose stools can put a budgie into crop stasis. It is also why the safe windows for wet food are shorter for birds than owners expect.
The second difference is scale. A cockatiel has minute energy reserves. A bird that stops eating properly for a day is in genuine trouble, and any gut problem that reduces intake compounds quickly.
The third is concealment. Birds are prey animals that suppress every visible sign of illness until they physically cannot maintain the act. By the time a bird looks unwell it has usually been unwell for days.
Fresh food: the clock in the bowl

Look at what is actually in the bowl rather than at how full it is. Husks pile up and hide an empty dish underneath.
Chopped vegetables, cooked grains, soaked pulses, fruit, egg food and any mash are all wet foods, and they behave the same way. Bacteria present in small numbers when the food goes in multiply steadily once it reaches room temperature, and faster the warmer the room is.
The working rule most avian keepers use is that wet food comes out within a couple of hours in warm weather, and within a few hours in a cool room. That is a rule of thumb rather than a measured threshold, and the honest version is that the warmer and more humid the room, the shorter the window becomes.
This is where the seasonal part genuinely matters. The same portion of chop that is fine all morning in a cool spring room is unsafe by mid-morning in a hot, humid one, and a cage in direct sun heats far faster than the room around it.
Portion rather than top up.
Topping up a partly eaten bowl mixes fresh food with food that has been out for hours and reintroduces whatever has grown. Offer a smaller portion, remove it, wash the bowl, and offer again.
Two bowls, alternating.
The simplest system that survives real life is two sets of bowls: one in use, one clean. It removes the temptation to rinse and reuse in a hurry.
Cooked food is not safer.
Cooking kills organisms present at the time and then leaves a sterile, nutrient-rich medium that recontaminates readily. Cooked rice, pasta and pulses spoil quickly at room temperature and should be treated as the shortest-window foods of all.
Watch what is left behind.
Food a bird has chewed and dropped back into the bowl carries saliva and crop contents. So does food that has been dunked in the water bowl. Both accelerate spoilage.
The husk problem.
A seed bowl fills with empty hulls as the bird eats. The bowl looks full while the food underneath is gone. Blow gently across the surface before you decide the bird has food, and do it every day, not weekly.
Sprouts: the highest-risk food in the house
Sprouted seed is genuinely good food. It is also, in microbiological terms, a small warm bioreactor sitting on a kitchen counter, and it deserves to be treated with more care than any other item a bird keeper prepares.
The method is the risk. Soaking seed in warm water for hours and then keeping it warm and damp for a day or two is the standard way to grow bacteria on purpose. Any organism on the seed coat, or introduced by hands, jars or tap water, multiplies alongside the sprout.
Human sprout production has caused repeated large outbreaks of foodborne illness for exactly this reason, and the domestic version has none of the controls that commercial production uses.
That does not mean do not sprout. It means sprout deliberately.
Start with seed intended for sprouting.
Seed sold for planting may be treated with fungicide. Bird seed sold for feeding is not screened for the organisms that matter when it is germinated. Sprouting-grade or human food-grade seed is the right starting point.
Rinse frequently and thoroughly.
Rinsing several times a day with clean water washes away both the metabolic waste and a large part of the growing bacterial load. Missing rinses is the single commonest reason a batch goes bad.
Drain properly.
Standing water at the bottom of the jar is where things go wrong. The sprouts should be damp, not sitting in a pool.
Keep them out of direct sun and heat.
Warmth speeds germination and speeds spoilage together, and the second one wins.
Use your nose and your eyes, and be ruthless.
Fresh sprouts smell faintly green and sweet. A batch that smells sour, musty or vaguely of drains, feels slimy, or has cloudy rinse water is finished. Discard it. Do not rinse it more and try again.
Refrigerate once sprouted, and feed a short window.
Chilling stops growth of both sprout and organism. Feed the portion, then take the bowl out again on the same schedule as any other wet food.
Sterilise the jars between batches.
Biofilm inside a sprouting jar reseeds every subsequent batch. Detergent and a brush, then thorough drying, is the minimum.
Stored food: rancidity, mould and the things that live in the bag

Buy quantities you will use in weeks, decant into something airtight, and keep the original bag so the batch code and date stay with the food.
Rancidity.
Seeds and nuts are mostly fat, and fat oxidises on contact with air, accelerated by warmth and light. Rancid fat tastes bitter, which is why birds start refusing a mix they used to like, and it destroys fat-soluble vitamins, so the vitamin A and E content quietly falls away.
Sunflower seed, hemp, nuts and any high-oil mix go first. A large economy sack stored in a warm room is worse value than a small bag used quickly.
Mould and mycotoxins.
Damp storage grows mould. Some moulds produce toxins, and the one bird keepers should know by name is aflatoxin, produced by an Aspergillus species that grows readily on peanuts and maize.
Aflatoxin damages the liver. It cannot be smelled or tasted, it is not destroyed by cooking, and a nut can carry it without any visible growth. Peanuts in the shell sold as animal feed are frequently not screened to the standard that human food peanuts are, which is a genuine argument for buying human-grade nuts for parrots.
The same Aspergillus family produces spores that cause aspergillosis, a respiratory disease that is difficult and expensive to treat and that often follows exposure to mouldy food or mouldy bedding in a bird already under stress.
Insects.
Storage moths and grain mites arrive in the bag rather than in your house. Webbing across the surface of the seed, clumping, fine dust and small moths flying in the room are the signs. Freezing a new bag for a period kills eggs before they hatch, and airtight containers stop an infestation moving between bags.
Pellets.
Pellets are far more stable than seed and are not immune. Once the bag is opened, oxidation starts and the added vitamins degrade, faster in a warm bright kitchen. Buy sizes that get used within weeks and resist the discount on the enormous sack.
Practical storage.
Cool, dark, dry, airtight. Keep the original bag with its batch number and best-before date, inside the container, so that if a bird becomes ill you can identify what it was eating.
Regional climate changes the priority. In hot and humid regions mould is the dominant risk and freezer or refrigerator storage is worth the space. In cold regions the trap is condensation: a container brought from a cold garage into a warm room sweats on the inside, and that moisture is enough.
Water, which is usually the forgotten half
Birds dunk food into water. Parrots do it deliberately, and every dunk turns the water bowl into a nutrient broth at room temperature.
Change water at least daily, and more often for a bird that dunks. Scrub the bowl rather than rinsing it, because the slippery film on the inside is biofilm, a physical layer of bacteria that a rinse does not remove.
Bottles keep water cleaner than open bowls but introduce a different failure: a blocked or airlocked spout means the bird has no water at all, and there is no way to tell by looking. If you use a bottle, check that it actually delivers water every day, and know whether the bird has learned to use it before you take the bowl away.
Never add sugar, honey, fruit juice or vitamin powder to drinking water and leave it out. It converts the water bowl into a growth medium, and vitamins added to water degrade quickly anyway.
What illness looks like
Crop stasis.
The crop is still full first thing in the morning when it should be empty, or feels doughy and does not shrink through the day. The bird may be quiet and fluffed, and may regurgitate fluid with a sour smell.
Yeast overgrowth.
Candida produces white plaques inside the beak and at the corners of the mouth, a thickened crop, regurgitation, and sometimes a distinctive sweet or yeasty smell. It is more common in young hand-fed birds and in birds that have recently had antibiotics, because antibiotics remove the bacteria that keep yeast in check.
Bacterial gastroenteritis.
Loose or discoloured droppings, undigested seed passing through, reduced appetite, weight loss. The droppings themselves are the most useful evidence, so photograph the paper before you clean it.
Aspergillosis.
Often insidious: gradual weight loss, reduced exercise tolerance, tail bobbing with each breath, open-mouth breathing, and characteristically a change in voice, because a fungal granuloma can sit at the syrinx where the sound is produced. Any parrot whose voice alters without explanation deserves investigation.
Aflatoxicosis.
Vague and non-specific: poor appetite, weight loss, lethargy, and abnormal urates from liver involvement. It is usually diagnosed by putting the history together rather than by a single test, which is why keeping the food bag matters.
Courtship regurgitation is not illness.
A bird that bobs its head deliberately and brings up clean, recognisable food, aimed at a person, a mirror or a favourite toy, is displaying. It is neat, purposeful and repeated. Illness regurgitation is passive, messy, foul-smelling, often flicked sideways so it sticks to the cage bars and the bird's own head feathers.
What the vet will do
Expect a crop swab and a faecal sample examined under the microscope. A Gram stain is quick, cheap and genuinely informative in birds, because it shows the balance of Gram-positive to Gram-negative organisms and whether yeast is present in numbers.
Culture and sensitivity follow if bacteria are the problem, because guessing an antibiotic in a bird with a disturbed crop flora frequently makes yeast worse.
A crop wash may be taken for cytology. Radiographs show crop size, gut gas patterns and the air sacs. Blood work matters particularly where fungal disease is suspected, since aspergillosis typically produces a markedly raised white cell count, and liver values inform the aflatoxin question.
Bring these to the appointment: the food itself, in its original packaging with batch number and date, a photograph of the droppings on clean paper, the bird's weight history if you have one, what was fed and when over the last few days, whether sprouts or soaked food were involved, how long food sits in the bowl, and whether any other bird in the house is affected.
Two birds affected at once points hard at the food or the water, and that single fact usually shortens the diagnostic path considerably.
The routine

Shallow, smooth-sided, easy to scrub and easy to see the bottom of. Bowl design is a food safety decision.
What never to do
Do not feed a bird raw meat, raw egg, or a raw pet food formulated for dogs and cats. Companion parrots and passerines are not adapted to it, and it introduces exactly the bacterial load their crops are least able to handle.
Do not top up a partly eaten wet food bowl.
Do not salvage a sprout batch that smells wrong. The cost of a discarded jar is trivial against the cost of a crop infection.
Do not feed mouldy, musty or clumped seed, and do not pick out the good bits. Mycotoxin diffuses beyond the visible growth.
Do not store food in a warm kitchen cupboard above an oven, or anywhere sunlight reaches.
Do not add vitamins, honey, juice or supplements to drinking water and leave it standing.
Do not give leftover antibiotics from another animal to a bird with a crop problem. Antibiotics that clear bacteria often trigger yeast overgrowth, converting one problem into two.
Do not use corn cob or similar absorbent litter as cage substrate. It grows mould readily when damp, and it is a documented source of Aspergillus exposure.
Do not assume regurgitation is always courtship. Look at whether it is neat and directed, or passive and foul.

When to get help
Go the same day for a bird that is regurgitating foul material, has a crop still full in the morning, is sitting fluffed and quiet on the cage floor, has white plaques in its mouth, has stopped eating, or is breathing with open beak or tail bobbing.
Treat any change in a parrot's voice as a reason to book, not to wait, particularly alongside weight loss or reduced stamina.
Book within a few days for loose or discoloured droppings, undigested seed passing through, gradual weight loss, or a bird that has started refusing a food it used to like, since that last one is often the first sign that a bag has gone rancid.
Bring the food itself with its packaging, a photograph of the droppings, the bird's weight record, and an honest account of how long food sits in the bowl and whether sprouts or soaked seed are part of the routine.
If more than one bird in the household is affected, say so first. That single sentence redirects the whole investigation towards the food and water, which is almost always where the answer is.
