  • Burns at the corners of the beak and on the tongue often look trivial and go deep.
  • Bitter sprays are not a safety system. Physical separation from cables is.
  • Replace a chewed cable. Do not tape it and carry on.

Current will pass through you. Cut the power at the socket switch or the consumer unit first, or pull the plug from behind the pins if you can reach it safely. If neither is possible, push the bird clear with something dry and non-conductive, a wooden broom handle or a plastic chair, never with your hand, never with anything metal, and never with anything damp. A second casualty helps nobody, and a bird whose rescuer is unconscious on the floor will not reach a vet.

Why cords, and why birds

Parrots explore with the beak. Chewing is not naughtiness, it is how a bird tests, dismantles and understands objects, and it is the same behaviour that strips bark from a branch in the wild.

A cable is close to ideal. It is the right diameter to grip, it has a firm core inside a yielding cover, it hangs and swings, and it runs along skirting boards and desk edges at exactly the height a walking or climbing bird explores.

The risk is highest where birds spend most time out of the cage. Desks, television stands, bedside tables, kitchen counters and the space behind sofas are all dense with cables, and all attract a bird that follows people.

Curiosity peaks in young birds and in hormonal birds looking for something to shred. Neither state is trainable away in an evening, which is why the answer is physical rather than behavioural.

What the current does inside the bird

Electricity does damage in three ways at once, and only one of them is visible.

Heat.

Current passing through tissue generates heat where resistance is highest, which is usually where the beak and tongue touch the conductor. That produces burns at the tongue, the corners of the beak and the inside of the mouth. Electrical burns look deceptively small at the surface and extend into deeper tissue, and the dead tissue may not separate for several days, so a wound that seemed minor on day one can be open and painful on day four.

Effects on the heart and nerves.

If the path of the current crosses the chest, it can disturb the heart's rhythm or stop it. This is the mechanism that kills instantly. Birds that survive the moment can still have an abnormal rhythm afterwards, which is one reason a vet may want to keep an apparently well bird for observation.

Damage to the lungs and airways.

Fluid can leak into the lungs and air sacs after an electrical injury, and that process takes hours to develop. A bird that flew away from the accident looking unhurt can be in respiratory distress the same evening. Any change in breathing after a shock is an emergency.

There is a fourth casualty that is not the bird. A chewed cable arcs, and an arc next to curtains, carpet or a wooden desk starts fires. After any incident the cable is scrap.

First minutes, in order

Isolate the power. Socket switch, plug, or consumer unit. Do this before anything else.

Look before you reach in. If the bird is unconscious next to a cable that is still live, the cable is still the problem.

Contain the bird in a small carrier or box lined with paper towel, in a quiet, dimly lit place. Containment reduces the workload on a stressed heart and stops a shocked bird flying into something else.

Add gentle warmth from outside the container, with an unheated area the bird can move to. Never seal a bird into a heated box.

Phone an avian veterinarian while the bird settles. Say what happened, what voltage the cable carried if you know, and what the bird is doing now.

Look at the bird from outside the container rather than handling it. Note the breathing rate and whether the tail bobs, whether the bird is standing, and whether anything is bleeding.

If something is bleeding, apply light pressure with clean gauze. Do not put anything else on a burn: no cream, no butter, no antiseptic, no ice.

Leave water available but do not offer food, and do not put anything into the beak. A burned mouth and a syringe are a bad combination, and a shocked bird aspirates easily.

Take the damaged cable with you if it is unplugged and safe to carry. It tells the vet what the bird bit and how much of it went into the mouth.

What the vet is looking for

Expect the visit to be about more than the mouth.

The mouth and tongue are examined properly, which usually needs sedation or anaesthesia in a bird that is in pain, because a proper look inside a small beak cannot be done on a struggling patient.

Breathing is assessed and often imaged, since lung and air sac fluid is the delayed killer.

Pain relief matters. Burns hurt, a bird in pain stops eating, and a bird that stops eating deteriorates quickly. Avian-appropriate analgesia is a veterinary decision, not a home one.

Nutritional support may be needed for days if the mouth is too sore to eat, and that is a good reason for a bird to be hospitalised rather than sent home.

Follow-up is normal rather than a sign that something went wrong. Tissue that dies from a burn separates later, so the wound is often rechecked once the extent is clear.

Making the home safe

Unplug what is not in use.

A dead cable cannot electrocute anything. This is the single most effective change and it costs nothing.

Run cables inside conduit.

Split loom tubing, cable trunking along skirting boards, and rigid channel behind desks all put a hard layer between beak and conductor. Choose rigid or thick-walled types, as thin spiral wrap is chewed through easily by a medium parrot.

Move the play space away from the cable zone.

A stand near the desk rather than on it, with the bird's own destructible toys, changes what is within reach without changing your working day.

Fit residual current protection.

An RCD or GFCI on household circuits cuts power fast when current leaks to earth. It reduces harm but does not remove it, so it is a backstop, not permission to leave cables exposed.

Supervise out-of-cage time.

Most cord accidents happen in the few minutes an owner leaves the room. If you have to leave, the bird goes back in the cage.

Give the beak something better.

Soft untreated wood, palm leaf, cardboard, vegetable-tanned leather strips and foraging toys satisfy the same urge. A bird with nothing to destroy will find your cables.

Replace, do not repair.

Tape over a chewed cable leaves a bird a marked target and an arc risk. Replace the whole cable.

What never to do

Never touch a bird that is still in contact with a live cable.

Never use water near a live cable, including to cool a burn.

Do not apply cream, ointment, oil, butter, antiseptic or ice to a burn. Oily products make the tissue harder to assess and treat, and cold injures already damaged tissue.

Do not force a burned beak open to inspect it.

Do not give human painkillers. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin are not safe to improvise in a bird.

Do not offer food or water by syringe after a shock.

Do not decide that a bird which flew away and looks fine is fine. The dangerous phase is the following hours.

Do not put the bird straight back into the room where it happened, with the same cable arrangement.

The bird bit a low-voltage charger cable, not the mains. Does that still matter?
Have it checked. Low-voltage cables carry less risk of a fatal shock, but they can still burn a mouth, short out and get hot, and a chewed lithium battery cable is a fire risk. Any oral injury in a bird needs a proper look, and the mouth is the part you cannot examine at home.
How long after a shock is my bird out of danger?
Not immediately. Breathing problems can appear over the following hours, and burn damage declares itself over the following days. Watch breathing closely on the first night and keep the follow-up appointment even if the bird seems recovered.
My bird chews cords constantly. Can I train it out of the habit?
You can teach a reliable recall and reward chewing on legal targets, which helps. You cannot train a parrot into being reliably safe around live cables, because a single lapse is fatal. Change the environment first and use training as a supplement.
Would clipping the wings prevent this?
No, and it can make it worse. A grounded bird spends more time walking on floors and along skirting boards, which is exactly where cables run. Wing trimming brings its own risks and does not solve a cable problem that conduit solves properly.

When to get help

Immediately, out of hours, for any bird that has contacted a live cable and is now collapsed, seizing, bleeding, breathing with an open beak, or bobbing its tail at rest.

Same day for any bird that has chewed a live cable at all, even one that flew away and appears normal, and for any burn, mark, or blister around the beak or tongue.

Within a day for a bird that stops eating, becomes quiet or fluffed, or holds its head oddly after an incident.
