Egg Binding in Birds: Emergency Signs and First Response
Egg binding kills small pet hens within hours. Learn which birds are at risk, the signs that mean act now, why warmth and humidity help, and why manual extraction at home is dangerous.

Egg binding is a female bird that cannot pass an egg she has already formed. It is one of the few avian problems that can kill a bird within a day, and it happens most often in small pet species such as cockatiels, budgerigars, lovebirds, canaries and finches.
A hen does not need a mate to lay. Many pet birds that have never seen another bird lay eggs, and those solitary layers are among the most common egg-binding cases because nothing about their diet or their body was prepared for it.
A quiet daylight look at a hen from outside the cage tells you more than handling her does.

Never try to remove the egg yourself.
The oviduct and the egg shell are both fragile. Squeezing the abdomen or pulling at a visible egg ruptures the shell inside the bird, tears the oviduct wall, or turns the vent inside out. A hen who would have survived a veterinary procedure often does not survive a home attempt. Sharp shell fragments left inside cause peritonitis, and a torn oviduct bleeds into a body cavity that has no way to contain it.

Why a bird gets stuck
A hen forms an egg in a single oviduct on the left side of her body. The yolk is released, coated with white, wrapped in membranes, and shelled in the last stage before it is pushed out through the cloaca.
Every part of that push depends on calcium. The shell is calcium carbonate, and the smooth muscle that contracts to expel the egg needs blood calcium to work. A hen who is short of calcium therefore makes a thin or shell-less egg and lacks the contractions to move it, which is the reason the two problems appear together so often.
Most pet birds eat a seed mix. Seeds are poor in calcium and contain almost no vitamin D3, which the body needs to absorb calcium at all. A hen laying repeatedly on a seed diet is drawing on her own skeleton, and eventually there is nothing left to draw on.
The other common causes are mechanical or muscular. An oversized or malformed egg, an egg that is stuck sideways, a first-time layer whose oviduct has never stretched, an older or overweight hen with weak abdominal muscle tone, and a previous oviduct infection that has left scarring.
Cold slows everything. An ectothermic problem it is not, but a chilled bird diverts blood away from the body surface, muscle contractions weaken, and the same egg that would have passed in a warm room stays put.
Stress and disturbance matter too. A hen that will not settle keeps interrupting the laying sequence, and a clutch laid under constant disturbance is more likely to end badly.
What normal laying looks like
Most small pet hens lay one egg roughly every other day until the clutch is complete.
For a day or two before the first egg she will usually look wider through the lower abdomen, produce noticeably larger droppings because she is holding them, spend more time at the bottom of the cage, and shred paper or search corners.
The actual passage of an egg is quick. A hen who is progressing normally strains, rests, strains again, and delivers within a small number of hours, and then goes back to perching and eating.

A bright eye and smooth, held-in plumage are the baseline. Fluffed feathers and half-closed eyes in a laying hen mean trouble.
The line between normal and stuck is behaviour, not time on a clock. A hen who is bright, on the perch, eating, and interested in you is working through it. A hen on the cage floor with fluffed feathers is not.
Signs that mean act right now

Birds hide illness. A hen who has stopped perching has given up a lot of energy to do so, and that is a late sign rather than an early one.

Repeated unproductive straining over hours means the egg is not moving. Straining that stops without an egg is worse, not better.
Leg weakness, lameness, or dragging a leg.
The nerves supplying the legs run close to where an egg sits. Pressure on them produces sudden weakness in a hen who was fine the day before, and owners often report this as an injury.
Open-beak breathing or a tail that bobs with every breath.
A bird's abdominal air sacs are part of the breathing system. A large egg presses on them directly, so respiratory distress in a laying hen is a sign of the egg, not a separate chest infection.
Swelling, bruising, or tissue protruding from the vent.
Prolapse of the oviduct or cloaca can follow prolonged straining. It is an emergency and it must not be pushed back in at home.
Droppings stop.
The egg sits against the cloaca. If nothing is passing at all, the obstruction is complete and time is short.
Why heat and humidity matter
Warmth is the single most useful thing you can provide before the vet, and it works for real reasons rather than as comfort.
A bird in distress loses body heat fast because it has a small body and a high metabolic rate. Warming her restores blood flow to the oviduct and lets the smooth muscle contract properly, and in mild cases a hen laid up in a warm, humid space passes the egg on her own.
Avian vets commonly use a hospital temperature in the region of 29-32C (85-90F) for a bird in this state. Confirm the target with your vet, and raise the temperature gradually rather than in one jump.
Humidity keeps the membranes around the vent supple and stops the bird dehydrating in the warm air. Running a hot shower to steam the bathroom, or placing a shallow open water dish inside a covered carrier that is being warmed from outside, both work.
The practical setup is a small carrier or box lined with paper towel, warmed from one side only by a heat pad or a lamp placed outside the container, with the other side left unheated so she can move away if it becomes too warm. Cover it partly to keep the heat and the calm in.
Never seal a bird into a heated container with no escape from the heat and no ventilation. Overheating a small bird is quick and it is also fatal.
What to do while you arrange the vet
Call an avian veterinarian first, before you start anything else. Everything below is what you do during the phone call and the journey, not instead of them.
Move her to a small warm humid carrier as described above, with paper towel rather than loose bedding she could aspirate.
Keep the room quiet and the lights low. Remove other birds, and remove mirrors, nest boxes and anything else that is stimulating her.
Leave water available where she can reach it without climbing. If she is on the floor, put a shallow dish on the floor.
Do not force-feed or syringe water into her beak. A weak bird aspirates easily, and an inhaled fluid dose turns one emergency into two.
If a vet has previously prescribed a calcium supplement for this bird, ask on the phone whether to give it now. Do not improvise a calcium dose from something in the cupboard.
Take a short video of the straining before you leave. It saves a great deal of guesswork in the consulting room, and a bird that is handled and stressed on arrival often stops showing the sign you came in for.
What never to do
Do not massage, squeeze, or apply pressure to the abdomen. This is the manoeuvre that ruptures eggs and oviducts.
Do not insert oil, lubricant, mineral oil, or anything else into the vent. It does not reach the part that is stuck and it makes an already slippery surgical field worse.
Do not pull on a visible egg or on any protruding tissue.
Do not use a human ear syringe, tweezers, or a cotton bud anywhere near the vent.
Do not put the bird in a bath of water. Steam and warm humid air are what you want, not immersion in a bird that is already weak.
Do not give leftover medication from another animal, and never give calcium injections or dose calcium powder into the beak on your own judgement. Calcium given the wrong way can cause its own emergency.
Do not decide to wait until morning. Egg binding worsens along a curve, not a straight line, and the overnight gap is where most losses happen.
Preventing the next one
The problem for pet birds is rarely one clutch. It is chronic laying, where a hen cycles again and again with no season to stop her, and each round takes more calcium out of her than her diet puts back.

A weekly weight on a gram scale is the single most useful record you can keep for a laying hen.
The levers that actually reduce laying are daylight length, food abundance, nesting material, and perceived mates. Shortening the day to around ten to twelve hours of light with a proper dark night, removing nest boxes and dark enclosed spaces, taking away shreddable paper, cutting back on soft warm foods, and stopping the stroking of the back and tail that a hen reads as mating all pull in the same direction.
Do not remove eggs as she lays them. A hen who loses eggs usually replaces them, which is exactly the cycle you are trying to break. Leaving a clutch in place until she loses interest generally ends the round sooner.
Diet is the long game. A formulated pellet base with vegetables, rather than a seed mix, addresses both calcium and vitamin D3, and a bird with adequate reserves handles an unexpected clutch far better than one running on empty.

When to get help
Go to an avian veterinarian the same day for a hen who is straining without producing an egg, sitting fluffed on the cage floor, weak in the legs, or breathing with an open beak.
Go immediately, out of hours if necessary, for protruding tissue at the vent, no droppings at all, collapse, or a hen who has been straining and then abruptly gone still and quiet.
Book a routine appointment for any hen who is laying repeatedly even if she seems well, because the treatable moment is before she is stuck rather than after.

The goal after treatment is a hen back on the perch, eating, and cycling less often than before.
Bring the laying dates, the weekly weight record, the actual diet including what she refuses, her age, the species, whether she has laid before, and the video of her straining. A vet may need to image her, provide calcium and fluids, or in some cases surgically remove the egg, and the history determines how quickly they can move.
