Bird ear openings: what to check, what discharge means, and why never to clean them
Birds have ear openings but nothing that can be cleaned: no flap, no wax, and an eardrum that sits close to the surface, so a cotton bud reaches it. This guide explains the anatomy, how to check the coverts safely without compressing the chest, and what crusting, one-sided discharge, facial swelling and head tilt actually indicate, including the sinus and vitamin A problem behind most of them.

Quick answer

A bird's ear opening sits behind and slightly below the eye, hidden under loose-barbed covert feathers. Parting them for a look is a check. Nothing goes in.
Birds have ears, but they have nothing that can be cleaned. There is no external flap, no long canal, and no wax. The opening is a short wide passage that leads almost directly to the eardrum, which sits very close to the surface.
That anatomy is why every ear-cleaning product and technique designed for a dog or a cat is dangerous for a bird. A cotton bud reaches the eardrum. A dropper of liquid ends up in the middle ear.
- Never put a cotton bud, a swab, an ear cleaner, water, oil or any drops into a bird's ear.
- The ear covert feathers are self-maintaining. Preening keeps them in order, and a healthy bird's ear needs nothing from you.
- Discharge, crusting or a swelling at the ear is almost never a local ear problem. It is usually sinus disease coming through.
- A head tilt, circling or loss of balance means the middle or inner ear or the brain, and it is a same-day veterinary matter.
- On an all-seed diet, the underlying cause of most facial and sinus disease is vitamin A deficiency.

Do not put anything into a bird's ear canal.
A bird's ear canal is short and the tympanic membrane lies close to the entrance, not deep inside as it does in mammals. A cotton bud that would be merely inadvisable in a dog will contact the eardrum in a parrot.
Birds also have a single middle ear bone rather than the mammal's chain of three, so there is far less structure between the eardrum and the inner ear. Perforating the membrane or forcing fluid past it can cause deafness, severe pain, and balance loss that does not recover.
Liquid ear cleaners sold for dogs and cats are formulated for a completely different anatomy, and several contain ingredients that should never contact avian tissue.

Where the ear is and why it is built this way
Find the opening by parting the feathers behind and slightly below the eye, at roughly the level of the corner of the beak. In most companion parrots the entrance is a neat round or oval hole, pink to grey, with a clean rim.
Those covering feathers are not ordinary contour feathers. They are auriculars, with widely spaced barbs and no interlocking structure, so they behave acoustically like a mesh. Sound passes through with very little loss while airflow at speed, water and dust do not. A bird in flight would otherwise have air blasting straight into an open canal.
The canal itself is short and funnels quickly to the tympanic membrane. In a young bird, or a lightly feathered species, you can sometimes see the membrane from outside. That should tell you everything about how far a swab travels.
Behind the membrane sits a single bone, the columella, transmitting vibration to the inner ear. Mammals have three. The practical consequence is that there is less structure absorbing a mechanical insult and less margin for error.
The middle ear is not a sealed box either. It communicates with the throat, and through the head's air spaces it is functionally continuous with the infraorbital sinus, which in birds is not a small cavity but a large space wrapping around the eye and extending through the face. This connection is the reason so many "ear" problems in birds are really sinus problems, and why treating an ear in isolation misses the disease.
What healthy looks like
Symmetry.
The two sides should look the same. Asymmetry is often the first thing you notice even before you can say what has changed.
Dry, tidy covert feathers.
No matting, no staining, no clumping, and no bald patch. Feathers should lie smoothly over the opening and part cleanly.
A clean rim with no crust.
The skin at the entrance should look like the surrounding skin, not thickened, scabbed or reddened.
No smell.
A healthy bird's head has no odour. A sweet or foul smell around the face is significant.
No behaviour aimed at the head.
Occasional scratching is normal, and increases during a moult when head pin feathers are coming through. Persistent one-sided scratching, rubbing the head against a perch, or repeated head shaking is not.
A head held level.
Small tilts while the bird investigates something are normal. A sustained tilt at rest is not.

None of this belongs near a bird's ear. There is no avian ear cleaner, no swab small enough to be safe, and no reason to comb the covert feathers.
Reading the signs, and the conditions behind them
Crusting and thickened skin around the face.
In budgerigars especially, crusty growths on the cere, at the corners of the beak, on the eyelids and sometimes extending back towards the ear point to burrowing mange mites. The crust has a characteristic honeycombed, porous appearance. It is treatable but it needs a prescribed parasiticide, and it tends to appear when a bird's immune status drops. Untreated it deforms the beak permanently.
Discharge or matting at one ear.
Look immediately at the nostrils and eyes. Unilateral ear discharge with any sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, or a wet stain on the feathers below the nostril is a sinus and upper respiratory problem draining through. The primary disease is usually bacterial, sometimes chlamydial or fungal, and the underlying reason is frequently diet.
Swelling below or behind the eye.
The infraorbital sinus is large and, when it fills, it produces a visible bulge on the face rather than a runny nose, because a bird's sinus does not drain the way a mammal's does. A firm swelling may be inspissated pus that needs flushing or surgical drainage. This does not resolve with time.
A closing or narrowing ear opening.
Chronic inflammation can cause the entrance to narrow or granulation tissue to form, which then traps infection. This is one of the reasons early presentation matters.
Head tilt, circling, falling, or an inability to perch.
This is vestibular disease and it is not a grooming problem. The differentials are middle and inner ear infection extending inwards, head trauma from a window strike or a night fright, heavy metal toxicity from zinc or lead in cage parts and toys, severe hypocalcaemia, and central nervous system disease. All of them are urgent, and several are reversible if caught early.
Head shaking and one-sided scratching without discharge.
Consider dry indoor air in winter, moult irritation from head pin feathers, mites, or early sinus pressure with nothing visible yet.
Blood on the head feathers.
In a single bird, suspect a night fright or a collision. In a group, suspect a cage mate. Check for a broken blood feather on the head, which bleeds impressively.
The diet connection most owners miss
Vitamin A maintains the moist lining of the sinuses, throat and airways. Seed-based diets are consistently deficient in usable vitamin A precursors, and sunflower-heavy mixes are the worst offenders.
When vitamin A is short, that specialised lining is progressively replaced by a flattened keratinising layer that does not produce mucus and does not clear debris. Small glands block and form white plugs. The bird loses its first line of defence in exactly the region that drains towards the ear.
The visible result is a bird with recurrent sinus infections, a blunted appearance to the small papillae in the roof of the mouth, and facial swelling that keeps coming back after each course of antibiotics.
This is why the durable answer to recurrent facial and ear problems in a seed-fed bird is a diet conversion supported by a vet, not a stronger antibiotic. Correcting it takes months, and it is done gradually, because a bird that stops eating is in danger within a day.
How to look, safely
A bird that already accepts head contact can be checked in seconds. Part the coverts with a fingertip; nothing firmer than that belongs on a bird's head.
Do it during a normal interaction.
A tame bird sitting on a hand will usually tolerate its head feathers being parted with a fingertip, especially if head scratches are already part of your routine. That is by far the least stressful method.
Use good light and no tools.
A bright indirect light and your fingers. Nothing else needs to touch the bird.
If restraint is needed, never compress the chest.
Birds have no diaphragm and breathe by moving the sternum and rib cage. A hand or towel wrapped tightly around the body prevents breathing entirely. Any restraint must leave the keel free to move, and any restrained bird must be released the moment it shows open-mouth breathing or distress.
Keep it short.
Ten to fifteen seconds per side. A stressed bird is a bad diagnostic subject and a stressed sick bird can decompensate quickly.
Photograph rather than persist.
A clear photo taken in a couple of seconds is more useful to a vet than three minutes of an increasingly frightened bird.
What changes by species, age and season
Budgerigars.
Most likely of the common pet birds to present with facial crusting from mange mites, and quick to deteriorate once systemically unwell because of their size.
Cockatiels.
Prone to chronic sinus problems, particularly on seed diets, and often show a persistent one-sided eye or nostril discharge before anything shows at the ear.
African greys and other large parrots.
Long-lived and long-tolerating. They compensate for a great deal before showing signs, so subtle asymmetry deserves more weight in a big parrot than in a budgerigar.
Fledglings and young birds.
Ear covert feathers can be sparse, so the opening looks more exposed. That is developmental rather than a bald patch.
Moulting birds of any species.
Head scratching rises because head pin feathers itch and the bird cannot reach them itself. This is the one time increased scratching is expected.
Winter.
Heated indoor air is dry, and dry mucous membranes are more vulnerable. Facial and sinus problems cluster in the heating season, alongside more feather flaking generally.
What never to do
Do not insert a cotton bud, swab, syringe tip, dropper or any liquid into a bird's ear.
Do not use ear cleaner, ear drops, mite drops or antiseptics formulated for dogs, cats or humans.
Do not pluck, trim or comb the auricular covert feathers.
Do not attempt to remove a crust or scab from around the ear or cere by picking. Mite crusts are attached to living tissue and bleed.
Do not treat a suspected mite infestation with an over-the-counter product of unknown concentration. Small birds are easily overdosed with parasiticides.
Do not wrap a bird's body to restrain it for a head examination.
Do not treat a head tilt at home or wait to see if it improves.
Do not respond to recurrent facial infections by repeating antibiotics without addressing the diet.

A healthy bird maintains its own ear coverts. Your job is to look, record and notice change.
When to get help
Contact an avian vet the same day for a head tilt, circling, falling, discharge or a bad smell from an ear, sudden facial swelling, blood at the ear, or any of these combined with fluffed posture, reduced appetite or laboured breathing.
Book within the week for one-sided matting or staining, persistent head shaking or scratching, crusting on the cere, beak or eyelids, or a narrowed ear opening.
Bring the diet breakdown by proportion, the weight trend, the date any new bird arrived, whether anything scented or aerosolised is used in the room, and a clear photograph of both ear openings taken at home. Avian ears are small, and the examination that actually finds the answer needs magnification, which is why a well-prepared appointment saves the bird a second one.
