Calcium for Pet Birds: Diet, Vitamin D3, and Why a Cuttlebone Is Not a Plan
Calcium problems in pet birds come from seed diets, no ultraviolet light, and repeated laying, not from a missing cuttlebone. This guide covers which foods actually supply calcium, why vitamin D3 decides whether any of it is absorbed, what window glass blocks, the demand of growing chicks and laying hens, and why over-supplementing is its own disease.

Calcium problems in pet birds are almost never caused by a missing cuttlebone. They are caused by a seed diet, no ultraviolet light, and in hens, laying eggs repeatedly on both.
Calcium has to be present in the food, absorbable once it is eaten, and not cancelled out by everything else on the plate. A cuttlebone hanging in the cage addresses only the first of those, and only if the bird actually uses it.
What is in the bowl every day matters far more than any supplement added on top of it.

Where the calcium in a bird's diet actually comes from
Formulated pelleted diets.
A good pellet is manufactured with calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D3 in a fixed relationship, which is precisely the problem it exists to solve. For most companion parrots it should be the base of the diet.
Dark leafy greens and some vegetables.
Kale, collard, turnip tops, bok choy, broccoli and dandelion leaves are useful sources. Spinach, chard and beet greens are not, because they carry oxalates that bind the calcium they contain.
Cuttlebone and mineral blocks.
These are calcium carbonate. They are a genuine source and worth offering, with two caveats: the bird has to use it, and it contains no vitamin D3, so it does not help a bird that cannot absorb calcium in the first place.
Crushed, baked eggshell and egg food.
Long used by finch and canary keepers, particularly around breeding. Useful, but again dependent on the bird eating it.
What contributes almost nothing.
Seed mixes, sunflower kernels, peanuts, millet sprays and most fruit. Seeds are the opposite of what is needed: low calcium, high phosphorus, high fat.

Why vitamin D3 decides whether any of it works
Calcium in the gut does not cross into the body on its own. Vitamin D3 drives the transport that absorbs it.
Birds make vitamin D3 in the skin when ultraviolet B light reaches it. That is the arrangement a wild bird lives under and the one an indoor bird usually does not.
Ordinary window glass blocks ultraviolet B almost completely. A cage in a bright bay window gets warmth, day length and visible light, and no useful ultraviolet at all.
That leaves two routes for an indoor bird. Dietary D3, which is present in formulated pelleted diets, or an avian ultraviolet lamp positioned at the distance the manufacturer specifies and replaced on schedule, because output falls long before the lamp stops looking bright.
Both routes have limits. Dietary D3 depends on the bird eating the pellets rather than picking around them. Lamp output depends on distance, on being unobstructed by glass or dense mesh, and on the lamp being replaced. Neither is a substitute for the other in a bird that is already unwell.
Safe outdoor time in natural sunlight is excellent when it can be arranged securely, with shade always available and the bird protected from escape and from predators.

Do not treat suspected low calcium at home with supplements.
Tremors, weakness, a bird found dazed on the cage floor, or a seizure are emergencies that need blood testing and treatment by an avian vet. Guessing at a calcium dose can cause its own crisis, and the underlying problem is often not the one the owner assumed. African grey parrots in particular are known for hypocalcaemic seizures, and they need proper diagnosis rather than a supplement bought on the way home.

The life stages when demand is highest
Growing chicks.
Bone is being built quickly, and errors made in the growth period leave permanent deformity. Hand-reared chicks are entirely dependent on the formula being correct and correctly prepared, and splayed legs and bent bones in a young bird are usually nutritional rather than accidental.
Laying hens.
Shell is calcium carbonate, and the hen supplies it. Before laying she builds a reserve of medullary bone inside her long bones and then dissolves it to make shells.
A hen laying one clutch on a good diet manages this. A pet hen cycling repeatedly on a seed diet does not, and the result is a thin or shell-less egg, weak contractions, and an increased risk of egg binding. Calcium is needed both to build the shell and to power the muscle that pushes the egg out, which is why those two failures appear together.
Older birds and birds with kidney or liver disease.
Absorption and metabolism change, and self-prescribed supplements are least safe in exactly this group.
Species with a known tendency.
African greys are reported with hypocalcaemia more often than other parrots. If you keep one, treat diet and light as a standing priority rather than something to review after a problem.
What good bone health looks like
A bird in good condition perches confidently, grips firmly with both feet, moves between perches without hesitation, and climbs using its beak without apparent effort.
The keel bone along the breast is a firm ridge with muscle either side of it, not a sharp edge and not a bent line.
Feathering is even, and there are no repeated bands or defects across newly grown feathers.
Weight is stable week to week on a gram scale, which is why the weekly weighing habit is worth more than any single observation.

A bird that eats its formulated diet as a meal rather than picking at it is the outcome that matters most for bone health.
Changes that mean act today
Tremors, twitching, wobbliness, or a fall from the perch.
Low blood calcium affects nerve and muscle before it affects the skeleton visibly.
A seizure or a bird found dazed on the cage floor.
A limb suddenly not being used with no accident to explain it.

The routine that prevents it

Measuring the portion tells you how much is offered. Weighing the bird tells you how much was eaten.
What never to do
Do not rely on a cuttlebone as your calcium plan. It is a supplement to a good diet, not a correction for a bad one.
Do not add vitamin or mineral drops to drinking water.
Do not give a calcium supplement and a vitamin D3 supplement on top of a fully formulated pelleted diet without veterinary advice. Excess vitamin D3 causes calcium to be deposited in soft tissue, including the kidneys, and that damage is not reversible.
Do not offer grit to parrots. They shell their seeds before swallowing them and do not need it, and eating grit in quantity causes obstruction. Some seed-swallowing species such as pigeons and doves are different, so check for your species rather than assuming.
Do not assume sunlight through a window provides ultraviolet light.
Do not remove a hen's eggs as she lays them in the hope of stopping her. Losing eggs usually makes a hen replace them and lay more.
Do not treat a tremoring or collapsed bird at home while you wait to see whether it improves.
