Bird burns and scalds: first response, crop burn, and why creams make it worse
Heat keeps destroying tissue after the source is removed, and feathers hide how far it has gone. Quick answer
Feathers hide the extent of a burn. The bird that looks lightly scalded on day one can be a much bigger problem on day five.
Heat keeps damaging tissue after the source is gone. That is why the first few minutes decide how deep a burn goes, and why the most common owner response, putting something greasy on it, actively makes it worse.
Burns in birds also declare themselves slowly. Feathers insulate and conceal, and dead tissue can take several days to separate from living tissue, so the size of the injury on the first day is not the size of the injury.
- Cool the burned area with cool running water, and keep the rest of the bird dry and warm.
- Never apply butter, oil, ointment, cream or any home remedy. All of them trap heat and contaminate feathers.
- A wet bird loses heat dangerously fast, so cooling has to be balanced against chilling in a small species.
- Hand-feeding formula that is too hot burns the crop from the inside, and the hole it makes may not appear for days.
- Every burn in a bird needs veterinary assessment, including ones that look minor.

If a bird has been near an overheated non-stick pan, a self-cleaning oven cycle, or any fire, treat it as an inhalation emergency even with no visible burn.
Fumes from overheated coated cookware cause sudden bleeding into the lungs and kill birds within minutes to hours, and there is no home treatment. Get the bird into fresh air immediately, open every window, remove the heat source, and go straight to a vet. Do not wait to see whether breathing settles. This mechanism kills far more birds than the burns themselves.

Why burns in birds behave differently
Feathers hide everything.
Feathers insulate against brief contact, which sometimes helps, and they conceal the skin completely, which never does. A bird can have significant skin injury under feathers that look only slightly singed. The tell is a burnt smell, curled or melted feather tips, and feathers that break off at an even level.
The bird does not tell you.
Prey species conceal pain. A bird with a serious burn will often perch, eat a little and look almost normal on the day it happens.
Depth declares itself over days.
Tissue that was cooked but not immediately destroyed dies over the following days. The wound at day five is frequently much larger than the wound at day one. This is normal biology, not a treatment failure, and it is the reason a vet will want to recheck rather than discharge.
Fluid loss is proportionally severe.
Burned tissue leaks plasma. A bird has a small circulating volume to begin with, and shock develops from an area of burn that would be trivial on a dog.
Infection risk is high.
Burned skin has lost its barrier, and the wound is usually somewhere a bird can reach with its beak.
Insulation is destroyed exactly where it is needed.
Feathers keep a bird warm and dry. A burn removes them locally, and anything greasy applied to the surrounding ones removes their function too.
The first response, in order

Cool water, clean dry towels and an open carrier are the whole kit. Nothing else should go on a burn.
Make yourself safe and remove the source.
Switch off the hob, move the pan, unplug the appliance. An owner who is also burned cannot help the bird.
Stop the burning process.
For hot liquid, get the bird away from the wet fabric or surface holding the heat. For dry chemical powder, brush it off before adding water. For wet chemicals, flush immediately and for much longer than you would for heat.
Cool the burned area with cool running water.
Cool, not cold, and not iced. Ice causes further tissue damage and constricts the blood supply the tissue needs to survive. Direct the water at the affected part only.
Protect the rest of the bird from getting wet.
This is the part that is specific to birds. A soaked bird chills fast, and hypothermia can kill faster than the burn. Wrap the unaffected body in a dry towel while you cool the injured area, and stop cooling if the bird starts shivering, fluffing up hard or becoming quiet. The twenty minutes of cooling advised for people and dogs is often too long for a small bird, and warming has to follow immediately.
Warm the bird afterwards, indirectly.
Warm the room and the carrier, not the bird's surface. Any heat source must be one the bird can move away from.
Cover loosely if the wound is open.
A clean, dry, non-adherent dressing or a piece of clean lint-free cloth held gently in place. Nothing tight, and nothing that sticks.
Transport in a covered, warm carrier.
Low perch or a towel on the floor of the carrier, so the bird does not have to climb. Cover it to reduce stress.
Do not force food or water.
Offer them, and let the bird choose. A bird in shock that is force-fed can aspirate.
Crop burn: the one owners do not see coming
This affects hand-reared chicks, and it is the classic hand-feeding disaster.
The mechanism.
Formula that is too hot burns the wall of the crop from the inside. The crop is a thin-walled pouch immediately under the skin at the base of the neck, so the heat damages both the crop lining and the skin over it.
Why it is missed.
At the time, the chick may simply seem uncomfortable, and the area may look slightly reddened or not at all. The chick often continues to feed. The damaged tissue then dies over the following days and separates, and a hole opens through both crop and skin. Formula starts leaking out of the chest at the next feed.
What it needs.
Surgical repair, but usually not immediately. Vets generally wait until the dead tissue has fully separated from healthy tissue, because operating too early means the repair breaks down at the edges. In the meantime the chick is fed smaller, more frequent amounts and the area is managed.
Prevention.
Never microwave formula. Microwaves heat unevenly and create pockets far hotter than the average, and stirring afterwards does not reliably eliminate them. Mix with hot water in a jug, stir thoroughly, and check the temperature of the actual formula, in the middle of the mixture, immediately before feeding, every single feed. Formula that has been sitting also needs rechecking, in the other direction, because too cold causes the crop to stop emptying.
If it has already happened.
Get veterinary assessment straight away and expect to return. Do not wait for the leak to appear before seeking help, and do not stop feeding, because a growing chick that misses feeds is in trouble from a second direction.
Reading the depth

The absence of pain is the most misread sign in this table. Owners take it as reassurance. It means the injury has gone deep enough to destroy the nerves.
Sources of burns in a home with a bird
The hob and the pan.
The commonest cause by far. A bird that flies through a kitchen has no concept of a hot surface, and a pan of oil is both hot and adhesive.
Clipped wings.
A bird with trimmed flight feathers cannot control its descent and lands on whatever is directly below. In a kitchen, that is frequently the hob. Wing trimming is often presented as a safety measure, and in this specific scenario it does the opposite.
Hot drinks.
A mug on a table at bird height is a scald waiting to happen, and coffee and tea are hot enough to cause partial thickness burns.
Steam.
Kettles, pans and steamers produce steam hot enough to burn, and steam damages the airway as well as the skin. A bird investigating a boiling kettle spout is in more danger than one on a warm surface.
Lamps and bulbs.
Halogen and incandescent bulbs, uplighters, and heat lamps reach temperatures that burn feet on contact.
Radiators, pipes and heaters.
Especially in winter, and especially for a bird seeking warmth.
Candles, wax warmers and hobs left on.
An unattended flame at bird height combines burn risk with fume risk.
Chemicals.
Oven cleaner, drain cleaner and undiluted disinfectant cause chemical burns that keep working until they are flushed off. These need much longer flushing than heat burns, and the container should go with you to the vet.
Electrical.
Cord chewing causes burns at the corners of the mouth and on the tongue, along with the cardiac risk of the shock itself. That is its own emergency and is handled differently.
Aftercare, and what recovery involves

Free access to water at a level the bird can reach without climbing matters more than usual after a burn.
Pain relief is not optional.
Burns are among the most painful injuries there are, and birds feel them. Pain suppresses appetite, and a bird that stops eating after a burn is in serious trouble quickly.
Expect repeat visits.
Because the injury evolves, wound management usually involves rechecks and sometimes repeated removal of dead tissue.
Bandages are difficult on birds.
They restrict movement, add weight that unbalances a small animal, get chewed, and can constrict a limb. Whatever the practice applies, follow their instructions exactly and check the area for swelling below any dressing.
Nutrition demand rises.
Healing a burn takes a great deal of energy and protein. Support eating, offer favourite foods, and weigh daily. Weight loss during burn recovery is a signal to go back.
Feet need particular attention.
A burned foot cannot grip. Provide flat, padded surfaces and low food and water, and remove high perches so the bird is not falling onto an injured foot.
Feathers regrow only at the next moult.
Damaged feathers stay damaged until replaced. If the follicle itself was destroyed, feathers may not regrow in that area at all, which affects insulation permanently in a large burn.
What never to do
Do not apply any grease, oil, ointment, cream or food product.
Do not use ice or iced water. It deepens the injury.
Do not peel away anything stuck to the burn, including melted material.
Do not attempt to remove hot oil or fat with washing-up liquid, solvent or alcohol.
Do not soak the whole bird. Cool the burn and keep everything else dry.
Do not give human painkillers. Several are toxic to birds.
Do not assume a small red patch is minor and skip the appointment. The size on day one is not the final size.
Do not put the bird back on high perches while a foot or wing is injured.
The burn looks tiny and my bird is behaving normally. Do I really need a vet?

When to get help

Warm, low, quiet and ready to travel is the holding position while you arrange the appointment.
Go immediately for any burn involving hot oil, chemicals, smoke or fumes, for any bird that is breathing with effort, for skin that is white, leathery or blackened, for an area the bird cannot feel, and for any bird that is fluffed, quiet and unresponsive after a burn.
Go the same day for any contact burn, any scald, any singed feathers with a burnt smell, and for any hand-fed chick after a hot feed, even if nothing is visible.
Bring photographs from the moment it happened, the chemical container if one was involved, and an honest account of anything you applied. Vets do not need that information to judge you. They need it because a burn covered in a substance requires different handling before anything else can be done.
