Bird Breathing Distress: Emergency Red Flags

Why bird breathing goes wrong so fast
A bird does not have a diaphragm. There is no muscular sheet pulling air in. Instead the sternum swings down and forward and the ribs flare, and that mechanical movement drives air through a system of air sacs that push it one way through rigid lungs.
That design is extremely efficient, which is why birds can fly at altitudes that would drop a mammal. It is also why they have very little spare capacity when it fails.
Two consequences matter to you at home.
Anything that immobilises the chest wall suffocates a bird.
A hand closed around the body, a bird pinned in a towel with pressure over the keel, a bird trapped under a cushion, or a bird held too tightly during a rescue can die in under a minute. This is the single most common way a well-meaning owner kills a bird during an emergency.
Inhaled toxins reach the bloodstream almost immediately.
The same efficiency that delivers oxygen delivers fumes. Cooking fumes, smoke, aerosol sprays, scented candles, plug-in air fresheners, paint, and cleaning products can produce collapse in minutes rather than hours.
There is a third consequence that shapes the whole article. Air sacs are not just in the chest. They run through the abdomen and into some of the long bones, so a mass in the abdomen, an enlarged reproductive tract, a swollen liver, or fluid in the body cavity all press on the air sac system and show up as breathing effort. In birds, laboured breathing is often not a lung problem at all.
What normal breathing looks like in your bird
Take this baseline now, while your bird is well. In an emergency the useful question is not what is normal for a parrot, it is what is normal for this parrot.
Watch from across the room, without the bird knowing you are watching. A calm, perched, healthy bird shows almost no visible body movement while breathing. You should not be able to see the tail move.
Count the breaths for a full minute by watching the very slight rise of the body or the faint movement of the tail base. Do this a few times over a week and write the number down.
Species and body size change that number a great deal. A finch breathes far faster than a macaw, and any published average will mislead you. Your own recorded figure is the only one worth comparing against at three in the morning.
Record the voice too. Note what your bird's contact call sounds like and how loud it is. A voice change is one of the earliest and most specific signs of an airway problem, and it is easy to miss unless you have paid attention to the normal.
Record the weight if you have a gram scale. Weight loss over weeks is the background against which many respiratory diseases develop.
Red flags, in the order they usually appear
Respiratory disease in birds tends to progress through a recognisable sequence. Knowing the order helps you catch it earlier next time.
Reduced talking, singing, or contact calling.
Often the first thing owners notice in hindsight. A budgie that has gone quiet or a grey that has stopped whistling may have an early airway problem, not a mood.
Tail bobbing.
The tail base moves down and back with each breath. This is the bird using abdominal and pelvic muscles to help pump the sternum. In a calm, perched bird it is always abnormal.
Change in breathing sound.
Clicking, wheezing, whistling, or a wet rattle. Healthy bird breathing is silent to a human ear at normal room distance.
Wings held slightly away from the body.
Birds lift the wings off the chest wall to give the sternum more room to swing. This looks like the bird is airing itself. In a cool room, with a bird that is otherwise quiet, it means effort.
Neck stretched forward and upward, sometimes with head bobbing.
The bird is straightening the trachea to reduce resistance. Repeated stretching and swallowing motions can also mean something is lodged in the throat.
Open-beak breathing at rest.
Birds do not routinely breathe through an open beak. In a bird that is not hot and has not just exerted itself, this is severe.
Sitting on the cage floor.
A perching bird that chooses the floor has usually run out of the strength or balance to perch. Combined with fluffed feathers and a bobbing tail, this is a bird in the last stage of compensation.
Tail pumping with the whole body rocking, eyes half closed, no response to you.
Immediate emergency. Every extra minute of handling reduces the chance of survival.

Have the carrier ready and lined before you approach the bird. The goal is one short, calm transfer, not a chase around the cage.
What to do in the first ten minutes
Stop and think about the air in the room.
Before you touch the bird, ask what is cooking, spraying, burning, or newly plugged in. If anything is, open the windows and get the bird out of that air. Fumes are the one cause where seconds genuinely count and where the treatment is free.
Reduce stimulation.
Turn off music and television. Ask other people to leave the room. Move any other pet away. A bird works harder to breathe when it is frightened.
Do not catch the bird for an examination.
There is nothing you can learn by handling that is worth the oxygen it costs. If the bird is in a cage you can carry, cover the cage loosely with a light cloth and take the whole cage. If not, use a carrier and one calm, quick transfer.
If you must handle, never compress the chest.
Support the bird with the sternum free to move. A towel goes around the bird loosely, never cinched over the keel. Do not hold a bird by the body in a closed fist.
Keep the bird warm, not hot.
A sick bird loses heat quickly and burns energy staying warm. Gentle warmth on one side of the carrier, with room for the bird to move away from it, is right. A bird that is panting and holding its wings out is too warm, so back the heat off.
Do not give water, food, or any medication by mouth.
A bird struggling to breathe is at high risk of inhaling anything you put in its beak, and aspiration on top of respiratory disease is often fatal. Leave the crop empty and let the vet decide.
Phone ahead.
Tell the clinic it is a bird in respiratory distress. Many will prepare an oxygen chamber before you arrive, which changes the first minutes of treatment.
Common causes worth knowing about
Knowing the possibilities helps you give the vet a useful history. It does not let you treat at home.
Inhaled toxins.
Overheated non-stick coatings, smoke of any kind, aerosols, and strong cleaning products. Suspect this first when several birds are affected at once or when a bird collapses without warning.
Aspergillosis.
A fungal infection, common in greys and Amazons, that often develops slowly over weeks. It can settle at the syrinx and produce a voice change long before obvious effort.
Upper airway and sinus disease.

Something inhaled or lodged.
A seed hull or a chewed fragment in the trachea. Typically sudden, in a previously well bird, with a dramatic change in voice and violent effort.
Air sac mites.

Pressure from the abdomen.
An egg, a reproductive tumour, an enlarged liver, or fluid in the body cavity. Look for a swollen or firm belly, a wide stance, and a hen that has been laying or nesting.
Obesity and fatty liver.
A heavy, seed-fed bird that becomes breathless with mild exertion. Slow onset, and reversible with veterinary guidance.
Heat.
Panting and wing drooping in a hot room or in direct sun is heat stress, and cooling comes before anything else.
The routine that catches this early
What never to do
Never check gum colour, tongue colour, or capillary refill. Birds have no gums, and the restraint required is dangerous.
Never wrap or hold a bird tightly around the body. Compressing the keel prevents breathing entirely.
Never wait overnight because the bird seems to be settling. Birds settle when they stop fighting, not only when they improve.
Never give human decongestants, antibiotics left over from another animal, or any product marketed for cage bird respiratory tonic. None treat the causes above, several are toxic, and all delay the vet.
Never nebulise, steam, or run a bird into a hot bathroom on the advice of a forum. Heat and humidity load a bird that is already struggling to lose heat while breathing hard.
Never put a bird into a small sealed box for transport. It needs airflow, not a sealed container.
