The polymer fumes released when these coatings are overheated cause bleeding and fluid accumulation in the lungs. Birds are frequently found dead with no preceding illness, and those that survive the first hour often deteriorate anyway. The fumes have no smell, so there is nothing to warn you. Open cooking, an air fryer left running dry, a drip pan, a scorched pan forgotten on the hob, and a pyrolytic oven cycle have all killed birds several rooms away with the doors closed.

Why a bird's lungs are the wrong place for household air
A mammal's lung is a dead end. Air goes in, oxygen is exchanged in blind-ended sacs, and the same air comes back out, mixing with fresh air on the way.
A bird's lung is a through-flow system. Air is drawn into a set of air sacs, pushed forward through rigid tubes in the lung where gas exchange happens, then out through another set of sacs. Air moves in one direction, and it passes across the exchange surface on both halves of the breathing cycle.
The exchange itself is arranged so that blood and air flow across each other rather than meeting in a pool. That arrangement extracts far more oxygen from each breath than a mammalian lung can, which is what allows birds to fly at altitudes where a mammal would collapse.
Everything that makes this efficient also makes it vulnerable. There is no reservoir of stale air to dilute a contaminant, the exchange surface is thin and extensive, and the air sacs push contaminated air deep into the body cavity and into some bones. A small bird also moves a large volume of air relative to its size, so it receives a larger dose of anything airborne than a person standing next to it.
This is the reason for the historical use of caged birds in mines. It was not folklore. Birds show the effects of a toxic atmosphere before people do, and that is still true in a kitchen.
The fast killers
Overheated non-stick coatings.
Fluoropolymer coatings are stable at normal cooking temperatures and break down when overheated, releasing fumes that damage the lung directly. Birds develop bleeding and fluid in the lungs and often die within a short time, sometimes without any warning signs at all.
The sources are wider than most owners expect. Non-stick frying pans and bakeware are the obvious ones, but the same coatings appear in air fryers, waffle irons, sandwich presses, slow cooker inserts, drip pans, grill plates, some space heaters, some hair dryers and straighteners, some irons and ironing board covers, and some heat lamps and bulbs sold for reptiles and brooders.
A pan left empty on a hot ring, a forgotten grill, or an appliance running dry is the usual trigger. A closed door does not protect the bird, and the fumes are odourless.
Self-cleaning oven cycles.
A pyrolytic cleaning cycle deliberately heats the oven cavity far above cooking temperature to burn residues to ash. That is exactly the condition that breaks down coatings and vaporises accumulated grease. This cycle has an established association with bird deaths, and it should simply never be run in a home with a bird in it.
Smoke and combustion.
Burnt food, cooking oil taken past its smoke point, wood smoke, candles, paraffin and kerosene heaters, an unflued gas appliance, and vehicle exhaust from an attached garage. All produce fine particles and gases that inflame the airway.
Carbon monoxide.
Colourless, odourless, and lethal to birds at concentrations below those that produce obvious signs in adults. A working carbon monoxide alarm is a bird welfare item as much as a human safety one.
Aerosol propellants and pesticide foggers.
Anything that puts a fine mist into the air puts it directly into a bird's respiratory tract. Insecticide foggers and bug bombs are a particular hazard because they are designed to fill a whole airspace and settle on every surface, including food and water bowls.
The slow burners
These rarely kill in an afternoon. They produce chronic airway irritation, recurring eye and sinus problems, poor feather condition, and a bird that never quite thrives.
Scented products.
Plug-in air fresheners, scented candles, wax melts, incense, reed diffusers, room sprays, and scented cleaning products. There is no established safe scented product for a bird, and describing something as natural does not change what it puts into the air.
Essential oils and diffusers.
Ultrasonic diffusers aerosolise oil into respirable droplets. Beyond the airway, some oils are absorbed through skin and can damage the feather surface, and birds preen anything that lands on them. Tea tree and other strongly aromatic oils have a poor record in small animals generally. The safe approach with a bird in the house is not to use them.
Tobacco and vape smoke.
Smoke causes airway disease, conjunctivitis and poor feather quality. Residue matters as much as the smoke itself. Nicotine and tar deposit on hands, clothes and surfaces, and a bird that perches on a smoker's hand transfers that to its feet, then to its beak. Contact dermatitis of the feet and feather destructive behaviour are both reported in birds living with smokers.
New carpet, paint, furniture and flooring.
Adhesives, backings, stain-resistant treatments, varnishes, sealants and composite boards release solvent vapours for days to weeks after installation. The smell fades long before the emission does. A bird kept in a freshly refurbished room can develop respiratory signs with no single dramatic event to point to.
Ammonia from the cage.
Droppings breaking down in a tray produce ammonia at bird level, which is corrosive to the airway lining. If you can smell it when you walk in, the bird has been breathing it all night.
Dusty bedding and litter.
Cedar and pine shavings release aromatic compounds and are not appropriate for birds. Dusty clay-based litters and some corn or walnut products add respirable particles.
Cooking without ventilation.
Even without non-stick coatings, frying, searing and grilling produce fine particles and oil aerosols in quantity.
What an exposure looks like
Birds hide illness, but respiratory distress is one thing they cannot conceal for long.
Tail bobbing.
A pumping movement of the tail with each breath. It means the bird is recruiting extra muscles to breathe and is one of the most important signs in avian medicine.
Open-beak breathing at rest.
Not after flying or a fright, but sustained, in a bird sitting still in a room that is not hot.
Voice change.
A parrot that goes quiet, sounds hoarse, or loses its usual calls has something affecting the airway. In birds the voice is produced deep in the chest, so a voice change is a lower airway sign.
Sneezing, nasal discharge, wet or matted feathers around the nostrils.
Wheezing, clicking, or any audible sound on breathing.
Healthy birds breathe silently.
Fluffed, quiet, sitting low, tail down, eyes half closed.
The generic sick bird posture. In the context of a fume event it is an emergency.
Sudden death with no preceding illness.
Tragically the commonest presentation of polymer fume toxicity, which is why prevention is the whole of the strategy.
The response to a fume event
One. Fresh air first.
Move the bird out of the contaminated airspace immediately, cage and all if you can lift it, or into a carrier if you cannot. Outdoors or a room with open windows on opposite sides.
Two. Ventilate the source.
Open windows and doors throughout the building, turn off the appliance, and remove the pan or the item that is smoking if it is safe to do so. Leave the extractor running.
Three. Do not wash or wet the bird.
Unless a vet tells you otherwise. A wet bird in the middle of a respiratory crisis is a chilled bird as well as a distressed one.
Four. Do not handle more than necessary.
Restraint increases oxygen demand in a bird that is already struggling. Keep it in the carrier, keep it quiet, and keep it upright.
Five. Go to an avian vet.
Same hour for any breathing change, and same day even for a bird that looks normal after a known non-stick or oven-cleaning event. Damage to the lung continues after the exposure ends.
Six. Tell them exactly what was in the air.
The product, the appliance, how long it ran, how far away the bird was, whether windows were open, and how many birds were exposed. Bring the packaging if there is any.
The routine that keeps the air clean
What never to do
Never assume a closed door protects a bird. Air moves through a house, and polymer fumes have killed birds two floors away.
Never rely on your own nose. The most dangerous exposure in this article is odourless.
Never use a bug bomb, fogger, or room-wide insecticide with a bird in the building, and ventilate thoroughly and wash all surfaces before it returns.
Never use an essential oil diffuser, and never apply oils to a bird, its cage, or its perches.
Never buy a scented product on the basis that it is described as natural, organic, or pet safe. Those words are not regulated in a way that means anything for an avian airway.
Never smoke or vape in a room a bird lives in, and never handle a bird with unwashed hands after smoking.
Never keep a bird permanently in a kitchen, however convenient the company is.
Never treat a bird's breathing change as something to watch overnight. Birds decompensate quickly, and a bird that is visibly struggling has usually been compensating for some time already.

Go immediately for tail bobbing, open-beak breathing at rest, any audible sound on breathing, collapse, or a bird found on the cage floor after any fume event.
Go the same day for a known non-stick overheating incident or a self-cleaning oven cycle, even if the bird appears completely normal, and for any bird that becomes quiet, fluffed, or off its food after an exposure.
Book this week for persistent sneezing, a voice change, recurring eye or nostril discharge, or feather quality that has deteriorated in a scented or smoky household.
Bring the product or appliance details, how long the exposure lasted and how far away the bird was, the number of birds affected, the bird's weight record, the cage lining and cleaning routine, and a list of everything used in that airspace including cleaning products, candles and diffusers.
