How fish skin and the slime coat actually work
A fish's skin, properly called the integument, is far more than a wrapper. Working from the outside in, there is the mucus layer, then the epidermis that produces it, then the scales, and beneath those the dermis. The routine that keeps skin healthy
There is no grooming step here. The whole programme is about keeping the water pristine and stable so the fish's own defences never fail.
Every day, watch your fish for a few minutes, count heads so none is hiding sick, check the temperature, and remove any uneaten food after five minutes. Each week, test and log pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, then change 25 to 30 percent of the water with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water, clean the glass and vacuum the substrate.
