However, if the soft stool is paired with vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, or if it looks like pure liquid, you need to call a vet immediately. Puppies have tiny bodies and can dehydrate in a matter of hours.

Signs something's wrong

Before we talk about home care, we need to rule out an emergency. Puppies do not have the fat reserves or immune systems of adult dogs. They can go from slightly unwell to critically ill very quickly.

Look closely at your puppy's overall behavior. A puppy with a simple upset stomach from eating a new treat will still want to play tug-of-war and will eagerly eat their next meal. A puppy fighting a serious infection like parvovirus, giardiasis, or coccidiosis will look miserable. They will sleep more than usual, refuse food, and may feel warm to the touch.

Check their gums. Gently lift your puppy's lip. The gums should be a healthy, slippery bubblegum pink. If you press your finger against the gum, the color should turn white and then instantly snap back to pink within two seconds. If the gums feel sticky, dry, or are pale white or dark red, your puppy is in distress.

A puppy that is still eagerly drinking water and playing is a good sign, but you must still monitor them closely.

Step-by-step

If your puppy is bright, alert, and acting completely normal aside from the soft stool, here is your 24-to-48-hour observation plan.

1. Assess the puppy, not just the poop
Take a breath and look at your dog. Are they bringing you toys? Are they drinking water? If the answer is yes, you have time on your side. Keep a close eye on them, but do not panic.

2. Take a picture
It sounds gross, but your vet will want to know exactly what "soft" means. Is it the consistency of soft-serve ice cream? Is it a puddle? Are there mucus coatings or streaks of bright red blood? A photo is worth a thousand words when you are trying to describe it over the phone.

3. Keep them hydrated
Ensure your puppy has constant access to fresh, clean water. If they are reluctant to drink, you can try offering a few ice cubes to lick, or add a splash of low-sodium, onion-free chicken broth to their water bowl to encourage them.

4. Switch to a bland diet (if eating normally)
Do not starve your puppy. Adult dogs can handle a 12-hour fast to rest their digestive tract, but puppies risk a dangerous drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Instead, replace their next meal with a highly digestible bland diet. Boiled, unseasoned chicken breast mixed with plain white rice is the gold standard. Feed them small, frequent meals, about a quarter of their normal portion every few hours.

5. Collect a sample
